WSBK Spain (2): Davies intractable, Rea not yet titled
Chaz Davies has just won his fourth WSBK victory in a row in Jerez! The Ducati rider thus delays the title of Ninja Jonathan Rea who exchanged places with his teammate and rival Tom Sykes on the Spanish podium, between the first and the second round…
Departure : Sykes got off to a very good start while his teammate Jonathan Rea was overwhelmed by the Ducatis of Chaz Davies and Davide Giugliano. The 2015 world champion – and 2016? – however passes in front of the Italian at the exit of the second corner.
Chaz Davies quickly took control of the race. Nicky Hayden is also very aggressive and hoists his Honda in fourth place ahead of the Yamaha of Lowes and Guintoli, the Ducati of Giugliano and Fores, the BMW of Torres, the MV Agusta of Camier, etc..
Rea saw Davies pull away at the end of the first lap and feigned an attack on Sykes on the first braking of the second lap. The two Kawasaki widen a slight gap on Hayden who distances himself Lowes and the rest of the peloton led by Guintoli. Matthieu Lussianna occupies a beautiful 20th place.
Leon Camier fell in the third lap and had to retire. Alex de Angelis falls a few moments later in the first corner, still tricky because on a slope and slightly bumpy … Aprilia rider n ° 15 joined the race in last position.
Meanwhile, Davies continues to attack like hell. Author of the best time in the race, the Welsh n ° 7 is one second ahead of the English n ° 66 and North Irish n ° 1. The "legendary" American # 69 is almost two seconds from the two Ninjas.
Three short seconds behind Hayden, Lowes is chased by his teammate, our compatriot, Guintoli. The two official R1s moved away from the premises Fores (Panigale) and Torres (S1000RR) but Van den Mark and his Fireblade progress: Michael steals from Xavi his eighth place in the 6th lap…
Up front, Sykes is unable to regain ground from Davies. "Major Tom" is kept under pressure by his teammate "Johnny" who, as a reminder, must score six points more than Sykes to win the title this afternoon … He must therefore not only overtake English, but also go get Welsh! Impossible mission ?
The n ° 11 Kawasaki Pedercini rider, Saeed Al Suiti, then the n ° 12 of the Ducati Barni team, Xavi Fores, crashed on the 9th lap. The Qatari driver can regain the track, unlike the Spaniard who cedes his compatriot Torres his ninth place.
While we were waiting for him on a big braking, Jonathan Rea’s attack on Tom Sykes intervenes in the entry of the long Sito Pons curve! The "Number One" surprises the n ° 66 in the middle of the curve and manages to descend the straight line opposite in front of its – unique! – championship rival.
More than five seconds behind, Guintoli then Van den Mark passed Lowes. The English pilot cannot retort because he turns a second slower than his opponents! After Chaz, Sylvain is also the fastest driver on the track. Nicky is unfortunately beyond the reach of our "Frenchie".
Three seconds ahead of the Yamaha n ° 50, the Honda n ° 69 maintains a very good pace at the end of the race which allows it to come back to the two factory Kawasaki! But the return of the American could play Rea’s game: by inserting himself between the two Ninjas, Nicky would offer Jonathan his second WSBK title…
Davies chained the perfect laps, increasing his comfortable lead: it exceeded seven seconds with four laps from the end. Rea continues to get ahead of Sykes, and Hayden to get back to the controls of his – good but – old Fireblade! Guintoli completes the Top 5, three seconds behind Hayden and 1.7 seconds ahead of VDM.
Hayden’s formidable comeback was interrupted two laps from the end, however: Nicky could not nibble the last ten lengths that separated him from Tom … Sykes meanwhile, was only a few meters from Jonathan Rea but did not can trigger attack.
Finally, Chaz Davies pockets Jerez a magnificent double, two weeks after that of Magny-Cours! The Ducati factory rider has won five of the last six races and takes the lead in the Pirelli challenge which rewards the fastest riders in the race: 9 records for the Welshman, against 6 for Sykes and 5 for Rea..
Second this afternoon, the reigning world champion recovers the four points given to Tom Sykes yesterday. Thus, Jonathan Rea is again 48 points ahead of his teammate in the championship … but there is only one event left: it will be in two weeks, in Qatar..
Offside for the 2016 title, "Chazie" finds himself 19 points behind the runner-up position occupied by "Major Tom". Honda riders complete the World Top 5: Michael Van de Mark has 27 points more than Nicky Hayden. Davide Giugliano and Jordi Torres lose ground.
Note in conclusion that Sylvain Guintoli, yet absent for five months, is only four points behind his own teammate Alex Lowes, and 21 points from 10th place occupied by Xavi Fores. Will our compatriot be able to make the final Top 10 at Losail? The last two races of the championship will be followed live on MNC: stay tuned !
