Beaten by nothing by Jonathan Rea this morning in Aragon, Chaz Davies scored a victory that was both masterful and historic in the second round: the Welsh rider gave the Ducati 1199 Panigale his very first World Superbike success.

Second Superbike race

Chaz Davies got off to a good start leading to the entrance of the first corner while Jonathan Rea took Leon Haslam outside to take the wheel of the No.7 Ducati. Behind Haslam slip Tom Sykes, Xavi Fores, Jordi Torres, Alex Lowes, Ayrton Badovini, Michael van den Mark, Nico Terol, David Salom.

Much better off than in the first round, Alex Lowes went straight in the middle of the first lap and reached the track last. Sylvain Guintoli is 11th, Randy de Puniet 16th and Christophe Ponsson 21st.

Davies completed an excellent first lap, half a second ahead of Rea and Haslam who rolled wheel to wheel. Sykes is a few lengths behind his three compatriots, closely followed by Spaniards Fores and Torres. Van den Mark is more than two seconds behind the leaders, ahead of Badovini, Terol, Salom and Guintoli.

Rookie Jordi Torres overtakes Davide Giugliano’s replacement at Ducati Aruba.it, Xavi Fores, at the end of the long return straight and crosses the finish line for the second time this afternoon in fifth position.

In front, Chaz Davies maintains his lead over Jonathan Rea while Leon Haslam gives up some length to the leader of the championship. Tom Sykes is a big second and a half behind the Ducati n ° 7 at the end of the 3rd lap … but there are still 14 laps to go and Haslam is in his sights !

As the majority of the first six pilots turn several lengths apart, making the procession a bit monotonous, a superb fight between Badovini, Van den Mark and Terol for the gain of seventh place.

Suddenly, Tom Sykes fell at the exit of the chicane which commands the straight line. The highside is particularly dry and the English driver is struggling to get up … One lap later, it’s Sylvain Guintoli’s turn to crash! The Frenchman ends an impressive run of 43 races that finished in the Top 15.

Chaz Davies, on the contrary, has perfect control of his bike and takes down Jonathan Rea by turning half a second faster. Leon Haslam, on the contrary, takes a few tenths from "JR", his rival on the track but also in the championship !

Spaniards Torres and Fores occupy lonely fourth and fifth places as the fight continues between Badovini, Van den Mark and Salom for sixth place. Mercado and Terol complete the Top10. De Puniet fights for twelfth place against Camier and Ramos, Ponsson is 17th just behind Barragan and Lowes.

The halfway mark has passed and Davies is now three and a half seconds ahead of the duo formed by Rea and Haslam. The official Ducati rider n ° 7 then slows down, but still turns a little faster than the Kawasaki n ° 65 and Aprilia n ° 91…

Jonathan and Leon, the two former teammates of the Honda Pata team, are almost guaranteed to reach the podium: their closest opponent, Jordi Torres, is more than six seconds behind the second RSV4 of the Aprilia Red Devils team (n ° 81 ).

The two strong men at the start of the season will therefore wait until the end of the race to determine their places on the podium. But Chaz is way too far away – almost five seconds! – and too fast to be caught in the four remaining laps: the first step is for him and his Panigale

Haslam ends this second round in Rea’s wheel but cannot trigger any attack … The fight for 6th place is more animated between Van den Mark on Honda and Badovini on BMW. Mercado on Ducati and Salom on Kawasaki are there to take advantage of the slightest error of n ° 60 or n ° 86.

Chaz Davies ended up winning with a – very comfortable – lead over Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam. Behind the three Britons – again! -, three Spaniards complete the Top 6. Far behind Jordi Torres and Xavi Fores, David Salom is finally ahead of Mercado, Van den Mark and Badovini! De Puniet finished 13th, Ponsson 16th.

Of the 150 points at stake since the opening of the championship in Australia, Jonathan Rea has collected 140, which naturally ensures him first place, 26 points ahead of Leon Haslam and 57 ahead of Chaz Davies. The unfortunate Tom Sykes is fourth (66 points) ahead of Jordi Torres (63) and Sylvain Guintoli (48).

The next points distribution will take place in just one week, at the Assen circuit in the Netherlands. Until then, stay tuned to know the statements of the main drivers of this weekend in Aragon and read our MNC analysis of this third round of the WSBK 2015 !
