MOTORCYCLE comparison test Alpen-Masters 2014 part 2
Alpine Masters 2014
Something is always glowing
Something always glows at the end of the Alpine Masters – overstrained brakes, dragging footrests or the whole wonderful alpine world at sunset. Because people and machines travel as far as the wheels can carry.
Thomas Schmieder, Eva Breutel

Pale mountains. This is what the locals called the Dolomites because of their light-colored limestone before they got their current name in the 19th century. This goes back to the French geologist Deodat de Dolomieu, who was the first to describe the dolomite rock. The fact that this rock appears rather yellowish and not pale is another story and not relevant here.

Of great importance is the unique location and the bold formation of the Dolomites, which concentrate on a few kilometers everything that makes motorcycling. The often daringly laid out passages over the summit combine steep climbs and steep descents, wide curves and tight serpentines, well-developed bypasses and narrow Holpergasschen, grippy asphalt and pothole slopes, all in a breathtaking change.
Handiness, draft and suspension reserves
A perfect setting for the Alpen-Masters, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year and is being eagerly printed by magazines all over the world. In the mega test, 20 motorcycles compete against each other in groups of four. Entirely new or recently revised motorcycles as well as older machines that have not yet been included are eligible to start. The winners of the five groups qualify for the finals, where the King of the Alps is then chosen: the motorcycle that best masters the various demands.
This takes a lot, because the test team is only satisfied when machines and people reach their limits. Test boss Gert Thole, for example, likes to drive braking systems until they glow, while tester Karsten Schwers lets the rear wheel rise steeply upwards during a stoppie. And loading expert Rainer Froberg usually only dismounts when the sheet metal parts spray sparks during the inclined position test.
The test procedure that is customary at MOTORRAD is specially tailored to the mountains for the Alpine Masters. The focus is on criteria such as handiness, torque and suspension reserves, while maximum speed or guarantee are not evaluated because they are of no importance in the Alpine carousel. In addition, there are special tests.
The second part of this year’s group phase starts on the following pages with the categories Adventure, Fun and Touring. In the first part (MRD 15/2014) the two groups Beginner and Power already competed. It was not necessarily the strongest models that prevailed, but rather uncomplicated characters with the Honda NC 750 X and the BMW S 1000 R. Because fat muscles are less important in the Dolomites, but smartness and coherent concepts are what count. It’s no different in the pale mountains than in real life.
The test track
The test track.
The test lap leads over four peaks over just 100 kilometers; impressive proof of the stormy rhythm with which mountain and valley railways alternate in the Dolomites. It starts in the famous winter sports resort of Canazei in the Italian region of Trentino at the foot of the Sella, Pordoi and Langkofel. The exact starting point is this year’s base camp for the Alpine Masters, the motorcycle-friendly four-star hotel “La Cacciatora” in the Alba district (1). The relaxed, wide curves up to the Fedaia Pass (2) are used to warm up. The first challenges await behind the top of the pass, as steep inclines and fast, but unfortunately often slippery hairpin bends lead towards the valley. Shortly afterwards the first measuring point (3) follows with a 15 percent incline (draft) or incline (braking). Behind the village of Sottoguda with its huge figures made of wrought iron, a narrow, hardly more than one-lane passage climbs up to the Falzarego Pass (4). The top of the pass remains on the right; immediately before we turn left to the Passo di Valparola. In front of a downright dramatic summit panorama, the draft measurements take place here at a height of 2000 meters (5). The anything but boring descent leads to the only long straight on the test track and on to Corvara (6). Via the unspectacular Passo di Campolongo (7) we reach the Pordoi (8), whose 60 bold bends carved into the rock literally catapult us back to Canazei and are among the most beautiful that the Alps can offer.
