If you want to shorten the motorbike-free winter time a little, there are a whole series of films that are supposed to whet your appetite for bikes. Old classics and newer films can be found on DVD. Which ones are worth landing in the domestic player?

Biker boyz	Cast: Laurence Fishburn Year of creation: 2004 Duration: 106 Available from 12 Price: 10.99 euros * Kid, whose father worked as a mechanic for the racing driver and speed record holder Smoke and died in the process, dreams of taking his speed record from Smoke. To do this, the boy founds his own team, the Biker Boyz. 2Wheels verdict: Nice entertainment.
Born to be Wild – skinny on the go	Cast: John Travolta, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence Year of creation: 2007 Running time: 96 min. Available from 12 Price: 10.95 euros * Four aging US suburban philistines want to know again, buy Harleys and go on the road with them. Soon the weird after-work rockers meet a real biker gang and thus have their problems. 2Wheels verdict: Lively comedy that guarantees one and a half hours of undemanding fun. A must for Travolta fans. But only for them. For everyone else, it’s sure to be on TV soon.
The wild	Cast: Marlon Brando Year of creation: 1953 Running time: 76 min. Available from 16 Price: 6.66 euros * Johnny is the leader of a motorcycle gang that really wants to let off steam in a small Californian town. He gets to know Cathy, the daughter of the police chief. Then Chino shows up, the crazy leader of a rival gang, and the trouble really starts… 2Wheels verdict: The Wild One adorns real events related to the feature film that took place in the small town of Hollister, California, in 1947. The black and white cult classic provided the template for countless gang war films. The young Marlon Brando in the leading role is still worth seeing today.
Easy rider	Cast: Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, Jack Nicholson Year of creation: 1969 Running time: 91 min. Available from 16 Price: 8.95 euros * With two heavily chopped Harleys, Billy and Wyatt drive across the USA and look for enlightenment, but find beyond love and peace only muff, philistineism and fear of everything that seems strange. 2Wheels verdict: The mother of all road movies. Can’t be seen often enough.
Ghost rider	Cast: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Peter Fonda Year of creation: 2007 Running time: 105 min Available from 12 Price: 9.95 euros * Stuntman Johnny Blaze (strongly modeled after Evil Knevil) has sold his soul to the devil, has to leave Roxanne, the love of his life, and now chases around as a ghost on a fire chair every night. In Blackheart, the devil’s son, he finally finds his opponent. 2Wheels verdict: The comic book adaptation is actually as crazy as the above plot sounds, but it is always good for an entertaining TV evening.
Harley Davidson and the Marlboro-Man	Cast: Don Johnson, Mickey Rourke Year of creation: 1991 Running time: 96 min. Available from 16 Price: 19.95 euros * The two biker buddies “Harley Davidson” and “Marlboro” take on a speculator villain who wants to close their biker bar. When the two steal a suitcase from the dark man, they find drugs in it instead of the coal – and a wild hunt begins. Two-wheel judgment: If you just want to switch off your brain in the evening…
At the limit	Cast: Ice Cube Year of creation: 2004 Running time: 81 min. Available from 16 Price: 9.95 euros * Life artist Cary as the good guy on a two-wheeled permanent escape from the bad biker gang and the FBI, garnished with a love story. 2Wheels verdict: US nonsense laden with cliches, which even the many clumsy stunts cannot save.
With heart and hand	Cast: Anthony Hopkins Year of creation: 2005 Running time: 123 min. Available from 12 Price: 12.45 euros * The film reflects the life story of the likeable motorcycle-crazy New Zealander Burt Munro, who set various speed records as a pensioner in the 1960s on a converted Indian (US original title: “The world’s fastest Indian”). One of them is still valid today. 2Rader verdict: Despite the stupid German film title, fascinating documentary cinema, well played, well filmed – an authentic piece of motorcycle history.
Long way round / long way down	Cast: Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman Year of creation: 2006/2007 Duration: 505/303 min. Without age limit Price: 19.95 / 24.95 euros (3/2 DVDs at Polo / Louis) 10-part, very humorous documentation of a circumnavigation of the world on motorcycles. In 2007 followed by “Long Way Down”, a tour from Ireland to South Africa filmed in the same way. Each in the English original with subtitles. 2Rader verdict: The two BBC productions are a completely new type of motorcycle film: authentic travel documentary on the one hand, presented by professional actors sometimes humorous, sometimes on the verge of a (real?) Nervous breakdown on the other. But always exciting, interesting and well done.
On any Sunday	Cast: Steve McQueen Year of origin: 1971 Duration: 220 min. Without age limit Price: 39.95 euros (3-DVD box from Louis) Brilliant portrait of the US sports motorcycle scene of the early 70s (dirt track and flat track racers) and their pain-free riders who were ready to literally go crazy for an apple and an egg. Only in the original English version (which is easy to understand, however). 2Wheels verdict: Absolutely worth seeing cult film, was even nominated for an Oscar in 1972.
Rocker and Biker Box (Vol. 1)	Cast: Sonny Barger and original Hells Angels Year of origin: 1966–1970 Running time: 361 min. Available from 16 Price: 12.95 euros * (2 DVDs) The box offers four classic biker films with the original Californian Hells Angels: “Run, Angel, Run”, 95 min., “Hell’s Angels 69”, 93 min., “Rockers know no mercy”, 87 min. And “The race of death wild angel “, 86 min. 2Wheels verdict: The films are less interesting because of their often absurd plot, but rather as documents of the times for all those who are interested in the history of the rocker and biker scene. It is a shame, however, that “Hells Angels on wheels” (Eng. “The wild thugs of San Francisco”) with Jack Nicholson is missing.
Canyon speedster	Cast: Eva Mattes, Hans Brenner, Ruth Drexel Year of creation: 1979 Running time: 121 min Price: 30 euros (DVD incl. Shipping, 25 Euro VHS, on www.schluchtenflitzer.de) The 17-year-old Andy has to get out of the oppressive narrowness of his parents’ farm, out of the smell of his Lower Bavarian homeland. He wants to live (after his father tragically dies), love (after he has met the pretty record seller Barbara), be free (after he realizes that the carpenter’s apprenticeship is not for him). The only valve for so much built-up youthful overpressure: his Kreidler Florett! 2Wheels judgment: Unique portrait of the rural youth generation of the 70s. An insider tip not only for Kreidler fans.
Stone cold	Cast: Brian Bosworth Year of creation: 1991 Running time: 89 min Available from 16 Price: from 19.95 euros * (as a used DVD on Amazon) Under the cover name John Stone, an undercover agent is smuggled into a rock band. Just when things get serious and the rockers want to forcibly free one of their buddies who is in jail on suspicion of murder, Stone’s cover is blown and a tough fight begins. 2Wheels verdict: Stone Cold is a rock-hard ripper full of good / bad cliches, but there are worse ones.
The Motorcycle Diaries – Young Che’s Journey	Cast: Gael García Bernal Year of creation: 2003 Running time: 121 min. Free from 6 Price: 8.95 euros * The film – based on facts – takes place in 1952 and shows the departure of the young doctor Ernesto “Che” Guevara from his home in Argentina. The later revolutionary crossed the South American continent with a friend to the north. The two of them cover about a third of the way on a rickety old Norton. 2Wheels verdict: Great shots of a fantastic landscape. Valuable in terms of content, a compulsory film for educated citizens and old 68ers.

Hit is the story of three young kumples who face the adversities of their everyday lives (lousy jobs, little money) and still try to fulfill their dreams with their bikes (including Suzuki Katana).
2Wheels judgment: The successful mixture of drama, social portrait and action film remained largely unknown, wrongly. In the German film jewel with a great cast, many of the over 40s generation will find their own youthful feeling again.
