Sports gloves up to 100 euros in the test
A look at German streets shows the bare truth and causes sheer horror: Many motorcyclists drive through the country with bare hands. Is it really only possible without protection? 13 pairs of sports gloves under 100 euros in the test.

Product test: sports gloves up to 100 euros
The impressive picture is only a few days old: The driver of the Ducati 1098 S flies in parallel with the author of this test from the Stuttgart boiler. His suit code is impressive and does the superbike credit: replica racing helmet, leather one-piece in matching color with the Italian devil’s head, martially shiny sports boots. Not bad, if it weren’t for a tiny but crucial detail: Your hands are in ?? Nothing! Interestingly enough, the Italo lover did not wear gloves. Why cannot be clarified at this point. The engine roars briefly as the Ducati disappears, never to be seen again, towards the motorway slip road. Can he only feel the pleasant pulsing of his Vau-Two with his bare hands? In any case, the fact is that in motorcycle circles people like to do without gloves. This is also made clear by various accident statistics in which the risk of injury to individual body regions is determined. In 22 percent of all cases, the hand is injured, statistically more often only knee injuries are threatened (40 percent). Another problem: From a medical point of view, hand fractures are far more difficult to repair than simple broken bones on the arm or leg.

On the other hand, critics like to throw in at this point that the hard shell protectors, which are now widespread even for simple touring gloves, cause complicated fractures in the event of unfortunate falls, as the hard edge of the protector cracks the bones on the back of the hand like a guillotine when it hits the asphalt. Which is why we have included an analysis of the shock absorption properties for the first time in this test of high-quality sports gloves in the price range from 70 to 100 euros, in addition to detailed driving tests.
The corresponding European standard for “Protective gloves for professional motorcyclists” (EN 13594) does not want to lean far out of the window on this topic. Between four and seven kilonewtons of residual force are permitted for the ankle protection – with an energy of just five joules that acts on the joint protector when the falling weight hits. For insiders, an utterly ridiculous undertaking, which even thinly padded construction gloves would survive. For our test, we significantly increased the energy values in order to be able to depict an accident scenario as realistic as possible on the test bench. Lo and behold: good gloves stay within the limit even with eight times the energy value!
This clearly shows that not all hard cases are the same, even if the same material is used, usually made of break-proof plastic. For many test gloves with high residual strength values, a thin, viscoelastic foam padding would be sufficient as a substructure, which acts like a crumple zone in the glove and effectively filters out force peaks. In this comparison of 13 pairs of sports gloves, the test winner proves that the direct grip does not have to suffer. There is certainly a suitable one for the colleague on the 1098 S. In red, of course, to match the Ducati.

Endurance test on the drop test stand: How well do the sometimes martial-looking sports gloves really cushion the hard impact? Bones are massively prone to breakage, especially with steeply increasing forces.
Of course, there is also a suitable standard for protecting hands: The European standard EN 13594 regulates what gloves should do for professional motorcyclists. An important test point is the shock absorption property on the knuckles. However, the applied energy and the resulting permissible residual force are selected to be so low that almost every protective glove from the hardware store could meet these values. However, this requirement would be miles away from the actual accident occurrence.
MOTORRAD has therefore designed its own shock absorption test based on the existing standards for joint and back protectors (EN 1621-1 and -2). On a drop test bench, a five-kilogram falling body rushes from a height of 80 or 20 centimeters onto the hard ankle shells and palm padding. Aim of the comparison: How do the protectors built into the gloves dampen the acting energy of 40 joules (knuckles) or ten joules (ball of the hand)?
The spread is considerable, as the adjacent graphic shows two extremes: top the ankle protection on the Hein-Gericke glove with a gently rising curve and a residual force value of around five kilonewtons (kN). On the other hand, the residual force curve of the Spidi glove rises steeply to ten times the value. The attenuation is almost zero. In a real accident with the corresponding stress, a bone fracture would hardly be avoidable.

In practice, the Haveba pleases with its first-class seat, a pleasantly ventilated interior and its feeling of direct contact with the motorcycle. Providers: Motoport, Tel. 04451/915200, www.motoport.de;
Price: 99 euros;

minus
Hard-shell knuckle protection with very poor shock absorption properties; Palm pad virtually ineffective; Back of hand lined with very thin padding; not ventilated
Conclusion
In terms of grip, the Daiki with its flawlessly pre-curved cut and supple kangaroo leather garnered top marks. So a real bank on the move. Unfortunately, on the other hand, there is a huge lack of accident protection. On the drop test stand, neither ankle nor palm protectors are convincing.

Modeka Track sports glove.
Providers: Beckumer Leder-Bekleidungswerk, Tel. 02521/850322, www.modeka.de;
Price: 69.95 euros;
Sizes: 6 to 12;
Colour: Black;

Very effectively ventilated up to the fingertips, even on hot days no sweaty feeling
minus
Middle hand cut very wide, offers little support for the hand when gripping and is slightly slippery; Scraper protection only average; Outer hand backed with thin padding; Fabric trim on the fingers; Palm stains minimally
Conclusion
Except for good ventilation and a reasonable price, the Modeka hardly score. Ankle hard shell and palm pad deliver average values on the impact test bench, while driving is dominated by a slippery grip. The thin fabric on the fingers has no place in sports gloves.

Ball of the hand protection with first-class shock absorption; very firm, non-slip fit; pleasantly ventilated; colourfast
minus
Carbon hard shell very thinly padded at the edges; strong, uncomfortable bulging on the little fingers severely restricts the feeling of gripping; a test glove when new with a defective (burst) seam on the finger
Conclusion
Light and shadow with the Rev’it glove: the supple leather precisely encloses the hand, the edge protection delivers a clean result on the drop test stand. But during the test drives, the shortcomings predominate: poor grip, plus the broken seam on the finger.

minus

Sports glove Spidi STR-2.
Providers: Shark Helmets, Tel. 0 41 08/45 80 00, www.spidi.com;
Price: 94.90 euros;
Sizes: S to 3XL, DXS to DXL;
To dye: Black, black / white, blue, red;
Material: Outer hand made of cow leather, lining made of polyamide;
Leather thickness: 0.8 mm;
Country of Manufacture: China
plus
Close-fitting, supple leather; direct contact feeling; very well ventilated, comfortable even on hot days; very effective hand edge protection; also available in women’s sizes; long cuff
minus
Almost ineffective ankle hard shell with thinly padded edges; Outside hand lined with only weakly cushioning padding; The buckle from the Velcro fastener presses heavily on the wrist; Palm stains heavily on the thumb
Conclusion
When slipped on, the glove still impresses with its soft leather. The feeling of gripping also fits with the wrinkle-free, supple palm. When driving, however, the strongly pressing buckle on the wrist fastener is increasingly annoying. The damping values of the ankle protector are unreasonable.

minus
Gripping sensation is noticeably restricted by hard grinding inserts on the little finger; The palm stains heavily

Test conclusion
Lohse
Tester’s paradise: no traffic, lots of curves in sunny Provence.
The test makes it clear: Making really good motorcycle gloves is an art in itself. On the one hand, the feeling of gripping the pedestal must be right, on the other hand, the best possible accident protection should be offered. After all, the complex hand is an asset that is absolutely worthy of protection. Once again, the experienced glove makers from Held succeed in doing this best in this test: The sporty entry-level model Evo-Thrux is convincing across the board. Places two to six score mainly because of their effective security package, and less because of their gripping access. Kushitani, Difi and Haveba offer this, but fail when it comes to shock absorption.
This is how MOTORRAD tests
Security (50 points): the core discipline in the MOTORRAD test. The damping behavior of the protectors on the knuckles and the ball of the hand or on the edge of the hand was evaluated on the drop test stand. In addition, the firm, non-slip fit and the general structure of the glove with its seams and reinforcements were assessed.
Fit and comfort (20 points): The gloves in different sizes were examined for their practical suitability by different test drivers on a winding pass route. If the grip feels right, the palm throws creases, if the climate is right at high temperatures, the finger lengths are well measured?
Equipment (10 points): What is the status of the material quality, is high-quality leather of sufficient strength processed, are Kevlar reinforcements, etc. used?
Processing (10 points): a critical look at the tailoring performance of the gloves, some of which cost up to 100 euros.
Coloring behavior (10 points): The immersion test in 30 degrees warm water shows whether the hands stay nice and clean.
