The return of the Caponord ETV but in version 1200, 12 years later

The big trail signed Miguel Galuzzi

Despite limited success, some of us will surely remember the ETV 1000 Caponord that appeared in 2001. Effective Italian translation of the trail adventurer its look was reminiscent of the Japanese Honda Varadero. Aprilia has made a clean sweep of the previous model and now offers an aesthetic and technological DNA machine in direct line with its entire range. Understand the engine character, sharpened chassis but of course advanced electronics. Long follower and specialist in "electro-mechanical" alchemy, the transalpine firm dresses its wading bird, affirming its claims in the segment. Because the new thin blade of Noale intends to challenge, from its appearance, the most capped of its congeners.

Cap to sport

The trail trend is sweeping in and spares no major manufacturer, however with very different approaches and suitable versatility. If the idea of adventure remains, some brands are adding a good dose of dynamism. It is therefore the turn of Aprilia, the sporting arm of the Piaggio Group, to inaugurate its new vision of an elevated road. News? Yes, because in 2001, the Transalpine offered an all-road machine, called ETV 1000 Caponord. Built around a characterful V2, the Italian with its dynamism and leading chassis then bore a striking resemblance to a certain Honda 1000 Varadero. Similarity that did not extend to sales volumes, rather confidential. In this segment, dominated by the Kaiserin R 1150 GS, the competition was still timid at the time. Gone are the days, how many … a couple of years have brought to the market many contenders with character and assertive claims. And now it’s electronics that are setting new standards for these road cutters. All these instruments of success, the firm of Noale assembles them in its new Caponord 1200. It remains to be seen whether they are well tuned. Two versions will be available, standard and Travel Pack, which inaugurates a new assisted suspension system. It is the latter that is offered to us, including a set of suitcases. For the occasion, it is rather in the South that we leave, on the tormented roads of the coasts of Sardinia.

Discovery

Racy, lively, the styling of the Caponord 1200 clearly places it in the category of sporty trails. In fact, its general appearance is more reminiscent of fast road travel than taking hazardous paths. Because if its lines suggest the track, it is not stony but that of high speeds where the sporty RSV4 excels. Work of designer Miguel Galuzzi, Aprilia skilfully exploits this design for a better identity of its range. We therefore find the tapered double optic, framing a central spotlight, underlined by elements of dummy forced air intakes. Topped with a short height-adjustable bubble, the fork crown stretches briskly towards compact sides and a tank, the surprisingly small size of which nevertheless accommodates 24 liters. The Italian-style casing follows the machine as closely as possible, favoring the elegant dynamics of the lines over the bulk of overly invasive protection. Likewise, the colored parts of her dress contrast with the elements left in black. These studied volumes are supported by a comfortable rider’s seat, stitched in red, completed by an equally welcoming passenger area.

Aprilia Caponord 1200 ETV seat

This seat rests on a slender, sheathed shell, supporting large passenger grab handles and integrated luggage racks. These, integrated from the design of the machine, make it possible to equip it or not with side baskets without disfiguring its profile with unsightly elements. With a capacity of 29 liters each, the same color as the machine, they do not however accommodate a full helmet.

The whole is based on a known structure. Indeed, under the features of this new trail also hide many elements of the Dorsoduro 1200. However, the geometry has been partially modified to satisfy the road vocation. Thus, the rear loop is reinforced while, on the other hand, to comply with touring ergonomics, the lattice half frame is modified.

The whole is bolted on two die-cast aluminum plates and still houses, as a load-bearing function, the 60 ° V-twin volcanic cylinder of the hypermotard cousin..

Headlight Aprilia Caponord 1200 ETV

Refined to offer a slightly more polished behavior, the super square block of the Dorsoduro (bore / stroke ratio: 106 x 67.8 mm) thus evolves in many points. Injection body losing five units, ie 52 mm, doubled ignition, injectors and lambda probes. Finally, the final reduction is also extended: 16×40 against 17×42 for the Caponord. As a result, the promise made by the manufacturer of reduced consumption. If absolute performance is not harmed, it is much more engine behavior that is changed. Thus, very slightly lower power and higher torque at such low values are obtained at lower engine speeds. Delivering 125 hp at 8,250 rpm and 11.7 da.Nm at 6,800 revolutions minutes (130 hp (96 kW) at 8,700 rpm) and 11.5 da.Nm (11.7 kgm) at 7,200 rpm on the Dorso) and under the law of injection profiles specific to road trailering. Connected to a Ride by Wire type throttle, the ECU thus offers three modes: Touring, Sport and Rain. If the second offers the full measure of the twin, the first guarantees a more serene use on all occasions. As for the last, it smooths the engine curves and also limits the cavalry to 100 cannons..
To pass them to the ground, an oscillating arm with double amounts, inherited here too from the hypermot ‘, supports a chain transmission. And the electronics impose its mark here too, controlling as standard, via a disconnectable anti-skating (ATC) and on three levels, the possible evasions of the rear axle. Size 180, it receives, like the steering tire, a Dunlop Qualifier 2 casing and a 17-inch aluminum rim.

The more athletic will appreciate seeing the breath of the V2 flowing into a triangular silencer with variable height. Perhaps less its massive aesthetic. We will forgive him for this false note in listening without reproach to his intoxicating vocalizations, which a valve modulates for more pleasure while driving and discretion when stationary..

The menagerie of learned chips also squat on the Sachs suspensions of the Travel version (see section ADD damping) both for the shock in the right lateral position and the inverted 43 mm fork..

More usual, the deactivatable ABS and also present on the two versions of the Caponord and consists of differentiated sensors. Radial-mounted one-piece Brembo M432 calipers engage the 320mm discs of the front brake, and the opposing single-piston retarder clamps a 240mm element. Finally there is a 690 W alternator to power these numerous equipments as well as a central stand and a speed regulator..

ADD damping (Aprilia Dynamic Damping)

The Caponord 1200 integrates a number of technological aids. The semi-active suspensions are the most remarkable expression of this, being the subject of four patents. During systems from other brands, the Aprilia concept is distinguished in particular by the absence of predetermined profiles (comfort, sport, etc.). On the dashboard, only the motorcycle load will be specified: Solo, Solo suitcase, Duo, Duo suitcase or a new Automatic mode. The preload is then applied to the shock absorber by spring stress via a piston compressing an oil reservoir housed under the rear loop. On the fork, it may be necessary to adjust this value by a traditional screw on the right tube..

Then comes the automatic adjustment of the hydraulics, while driving, derived from automotive techniques integrating the Sky-Hook and Acceleration Driven algorithms. This method makes it possible to manage the various oscillations measured at numerous points. Of course, the suspension travel both in dynamic use phases (acceleration, braking, change of angles) and the quality of the coating encountered is an obvious measure. The left fork tube contains a pressure sensor acting on a valve while another is attached to the rear frame and determines the swingarm travel. But the engine speed is also taken into account because it is a source of vibrations. All the information processed thus makes it possible to respond to the slow and rapid speed movements (high and low frequencies) of the suspensions at any time, adapting more finely than the mechanical systems. The threshold values are pushed back, allowing more important variables, and therefore comfort and efficiency ditto.

In the saddle

Decidedly, Aprilia has gone to great lengths: the Caponord is a comfortable model, very rare from the manufacturer Transalpin! In addition, it seems low despite the 840 mm where the seat culminates. The finesse of the frame has a lot to do with it because the Moto Guzzi Stelvio that accompanies us, with identical dimensions, seems higher. Counterpoint, the legs present a slightly more marked flexion, the feet resting on short rubberized lugs. The bust remains straight and the hands are raised to catch the handles. These automatically include hand guards, are pre-wired for optional heating and the levers benefit from spacing adjustments..

Barely curved, the large hanger dominates a single and vast digital ovoid screen. Particularly complete, it includes a bar-graph tachometer in the upper part, surmounting a large tachometer. On both sides is displayed fuel gauge and engine temperature. Next comes the map indicator selected, gear engaged, anti-skid level and the chosen preload. In the low central position, via the mode button on the left stalk, scrolls a partial double integrating each one: odometer, clock, maximum speed, speed and duration of the trip. If you think clutter…. you are wrong. It couldn’t be more clear and precise.

Speedometer Aprilia Caponord 1200 ETV

Adjustable in inclination and over 80 mm, the narrow screen uses the Guzzi trail system. Simple, efficient but still less than the worm gear of the new BMW R 1200 GS. We will console ourselves with the presence of a part-projection mounted on the lower tee. On the other hand, if the fork well is well sheathed, why the hell not to have masked the wires and lugs of the optics??
Likewise, the too small engine guard lets appear large hoses and other easily camouflable wires..
For the rest, the assembly and coating of the various components is of good quality. A central stand is fitted to the Caponord by default. Easily positioned on this binding despite its 250 kilos in running order (estimate for 228 kilos dry in Travel pack and 214 in Standard), the Italian trail also surprises by the ease of handling, engine off. Finally, the mirrors are easily adjusted, reflecting a wide and vibration-free image. Enhancing and stylish, the Caponord is just waiting to show off its ramage.

In the city

Surprisingly discreet under 5,000 revolutions at a standstill, the twin then releases sounds much more in line with its reputation. Hoarse, deep, the way of V2 sets the tone: sporty. Before leaving, we will choose its suspension setting, which cannot be changed on the road. On the contrary, adjustable while driving by pressing on the starter, I retain an engine map adapted to the very wet conditions of this start of the test: Rain! No need to tempt the devil right away with a twin-cylinder engine full of torque but not really polite. In fact, the choice is judicious and appreciably calms the harpy on stilts. In addition, its flexibility is significantly improved, allowing, in 4 ° a speed of 2000 revolutions. On the last report, we will border on 60 km / h at 3,000 revolutions / minute at the limit of engine apoplexy.

Excellent, the reduced turning radius makes the machine pleasant in confined spaces. Agile and gentle, the Caponord weaves its way through the urban world with ease. But beware of tendonitis because the firmness of the clutch lever surprises. Fortunately, the box locks precisely and smoothly, accepting "forced" use without taking offense. Finally, we note the liveliness of the train before the column angle of 26.1 ° and caster of 1.565 mm bring to the machine. As a corollary, at very low speed, the rear 180 mm flange seems to "stick" to the steering a little..

Although at ease in the urban element, the Caponord is precisely hungry for space and long journeys. Follow the compass and leave the walls.

Motorway and expressways

A sporty 1200cc twin doesn’t go into great detail when it comes to speeding up. A brief moment is enough to see the legal display then disappear as quickly. All accompanied by the wild growl that the silencer exudes.

Without being the best in the segment, the protection remains correct. At 130 km / h and bubble in high position, only the shoulders and the top of the helmet are subjected to the air flow. The rest of the body is well protected, even from the rain, proving the good work of the flanks. Likewise, the radiators placed low deflect a good part of the elements. At stabilized speed, we also appreciate a mastered soundtrack, ideal on long journeys. And for even more serenity, engage the cruise control…

So, at 5,000 laps, the Caponord is ready to leap into high speed. Above 190 km / h, the stability becomes less good, the suitcases causing slight turbulence. However, nothing anxiety or disagreeable. Just enough to decide to leave the runway before it takes off your license.

Departmental

In any Aprilia, the sporting genes are never far away. Sport mode engaged the "Capo" then recalls a less pleasant character. And the tortuous (tourist) circuit having now dried up thanks to the squalls and the sun finally returned…. Now is the time to really test the high-tech chassis and suspensions. The most obvious is the very good control of mass transfers, greatly limiting the diving effect of the fork. We then throw ourselves all the more easily on the Sardinian ferrule.

Lively, the front axle requires a little getting used to, sometimes seeming too impatient to enter a curve. To get out of it, Noale’s block does not play soft, making full use of the large surface of the rear tire and pulling all its torque. Slightly oversteer, would the Caponord be more efficient with another set of tires? To be continued.

For now, it’s not about falling asleep. Count on the exhaust to keep you in a trance once the engine is in Touring or Sport mode. The difference in sound is obvious, accompanied by the groans of the air box finally stuffed at ease. If the tourism version of the injection is already copious, the upper profile impresses with its impetuosity. The twin does not let go. It’s up to you.

Aprilia Caponord 1200 on national

Moving from one angle to another with ease and naturalness, the Aprilia begins to scratch the asphalt of its footrest lugs. It is ultimately the Auto damping setting that wins the votes, keeping the machine at the best comfort / efficiency ratio. Thus configured, the Caponord adapts itself to the arrival of a passenger or any other additional load. Without any intervention on your part…. There is no denying the interest and the quality of the ADD system. Simple and efficient, it avoids any superfluous handling, adapting to piloting and the type of crew.

Not very intrusive on the road, the traction control fully fulfills its role on dirty roads or small paths taken more or less by mistake. Indeed, the Dunlops are not intended for crossroads. We prefer setting 1 or 2. The third iteration generates too many jolts, the system hesitating between contrasting intervention values and can reduce the dynamics on dry roads..

Finally, if by chance a passage in a curve were optimistic, the rear brake would sit the trail on a more suitable trajectory. This will avoid taking the front lever which then slightly locks the steering..

Part-cycle

Healthy and rigid, the Caponord benefits from many successful genetics. Equipped here with semi-active suspensions, the Italian seems all the more efficient and comfortable. Its front axle requires a short getting used to but then proves particularly agile.

Aprilia Caponord 1200 ETV

Braking

Powerful, incisive but maintaining sufficient progressiveness, the front calipers stop the crew with brio and confidence. Not once have we triggered ABS on these items. The opposite device can sometimes be engaged, but each time in all discretion.

Comfort / Duo

Ergonomically remarkable both in terms of instruments and reception for its pilot, the space allocated to the passenger seems to be of the same level. Sitting comfort, leg flexion, general position…. the Caponord promises long journeys without fatigue. Be careful, however, to spare the accompanying person by adopting a sunken piloting.

Duo on Aprilia Caponord 1200 ETV

Consumption

Let’s talk about the things that annoy…. large displacement and manly behavior do not agree well with the savings of explosive liquid. And yet, we really didn’t "hit" on the mechanics for half the trip. The return on the other hand…. But all the same: more than 9 liters per 100 km measured! When we love, eh…. well yes, we count all the same. The efforts made on this point do not seem very convincing. To confirm.

Conclusion

With this new sport trail opus, Aprilia offers a machine that is accomplished both in terms of dynamics and comfort. Its angry twin-cylinder and lively geometry make this trail a machine with two faces. A convincing traveler but also a characterful road traveler, she is a stylish and efficient alternative to the sporting tenors of the segment. In addition, the expertise of the Italian manufacturer in high-end electronics also guarantees performance and reliability to these innovations; Especially for this Travel Pack version with piloted suspensions. The Caponord 1200 offers, in fact, a real difference with the models already in place. Its ultimate quality is a particularly low price. In Standard, count € 12,999 for the Caponord 1200 ABS and € 15,399 for the Caponord 1200 ABS ADD (Travel pack).

This is the call rate for a 2013 BMW R 1200 GS (€ 15,150), devoid of ESA Dynamic, anti-skating and other cruise control (count € 3,100 more for the equivalent). The German’s behavior is imperial on the road, whatever the pace, and her abilities on rough tracks are very real. But Aprilia does not oppose it anyway any claim off road. Its most likely rival is a certain Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Touring. At € 19,990, it seems very expensive. However, the Bolognese can boast of an even superior finish and performance. The new KTM 1190 Adventure + EDS TPMS priced at € 13,990 can also be opposed to it. Two other muscular challengers, but not available with active suspensions, will be dangerous: Triumph 1050 Tiger Sport at € 12,490 and Kawasaki Versys 1000 ABS, offered at € 12,499. And you will have to put your hand in the wallet for the suitcases.

We will mention, as a reminder, the other representatives of this boiling segment. The other trail from the Piaggio group, the Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 8V ABS (and ATC anti-skating included) is priced at € 14,390. Less sporty but more versatile, it nevertheless charms lovers of living mechanics. Finally, Honda VFR 1200X Crosstourer ABS at € 13,990, Triumph Tiger Explorer available from € 14,890 and Yamaha XTZ 1200 Super Tenere, € 14,999 are also more open alternatives on off-road outings..

For its big comeback, the Caponord 1200 offers little more than its consumption to the critics. Enhancing and homogeneous, ready to underline your trips with her vibrant and sonorous performances, will the girl from the South make you lose your course??
