A better course

In 2013, Aprilia presented the heir to its first big Caponord trail, the ETV 1000 Caponord, which appeared 12 years earlier. Completely modified, this Caponord 1200 Travel Pack then inaugurated, in addition to the cycle and engine part, a brand new electronic suspension system.. This semi-active ADD (Aprilia Dynamic Damping) even offered a fully automatic mode, unique on the market. However, their behavior, sometimes erratic, could be confusing. To assert its choices and keep up with the dynamics of the competition, Aprilia had to refine its machine. Specialist in "electro-mechanical" alchemy, the transalpine firm therefore offers, at the start of 2015, an evolution of its wader with this new Caponord 1200 Rally.

Aprilia Caponord 1200 offers a new version called `` Rally ''

The similarities with its predecessor seem numerous and the very conditions of the rainy trial in Sardinia try to mimic impressions already experienced. Same roads, same difficult weather…. However, the big trail presents a number of differences capable of satisfying many riders, with new predispositions to get out of the asphalt a little more easily..

Discovery

Aesthetically, the machine hardly evolves and we will first rely on the pleasant colors of the adventurer to differentiate it from its sister. Racy, the sporty style posed by the designer Miguel Galuzzi for the RSV4 still dynamically dresses the Caponord. But other distinctive elements prepare the trail for more adventures: tubular side protections, a pair of additional LED headlamps and original Givi aluminized canteens. More subtle, a thick windshield (adjustable in height) and a front wheel of 19 "with rims with tangential spokes equip the transalpine. The tank retains its generous capacity of 24 liters without weighing down the lines. The welcoming rider saddle is completed. an equally pleasant passenger space. This seat is based on a sheathed shell, supporting large passenger grab handles. But the luggage racks are no longer integrated, now made up of metal frames. Declared choices of the Noale firm, these elements would also allow better resistance in the event of a fall. With a capacity of 33 liters, the suitcases do not accommodate a helmet. You will have to go through the 52-liter top case…

Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally front

The modified geometry satisfies the road vocation, with a more open column angle (27.4 °) and an extended wheelbase for more stability. Tubular trellis bolted to two aluminum plates, the frame integrates as a load-bearing function the exuberant V-twin at 60 ° of 1,197 cc. Super-square, the bore-stroke ratio of 106 x 67.8 mm gives a highly responsive behavior. Quick to climb into the towers, its large bowls also promote low-end torque. The latter also benefits from an optimized fuel combustion efficiency thanks to the dual ignition, which also influences fuel consumption. In addition, a modified gas plenum chamber (referred to as a resonator) further improves the availability of driving force. If the maximum engine performance values (125 hp at 8,250 rpm and 11.7 da.Nm at 6,800 rpm) are unchanged, the engine should be fuller at mid-range when the ultimate power is available. 450 laps lower. Ample, the breath of the V2 flows into a triangular silencer with variable height, equipped with a valve modulating its vocalizations, for more driving pleasure and discretion when stationary.

Controlled by a handle of the Ride by Wire type throttles, we find the three available maps: Touring, Sport and Rain. If the second offers the full measure of the twin, the first guarantees a little less angry use on all occasions. As for the latter, it smooths the engine curves and also limits the stud to 100 units. The disconnectable traction control (ATC) remains standard, adjustable on three levels. And, of course, Aprilia is renewing its power-assisted suspension system (see ADD damping section) which we hope will be more natural..

Side cases, frame protections, high screen ... the Caponord Rally has its own set of equipment

The two-channel, switchable Continental ABS controls one-piece Brembo M432 radial-mount calipers that engage the 320mm discs of the front brake. The opposing single piston retarder clamps a 240mm element. This controls the rear axle which can accommodate different tire sizes. The standard fitment is a pair of Metzeler Tourance Next in 170 for the rear and 120 for the steering gear. But the most ambitious for the offroad will choose tires in 150 and 110.

Remarkably equipped in this Rally version, we regret on this Caponord the unexplained disappearance of the central stand and the effective rear mudguard present on the standard model. An even more generous tank would have been appreciated.

The side bags offer 33 liters of capacity

Reminder on how ADD (Aprilia Dynamic Damping) works

The Caponord 1200 Rally incorporates, like its predecessor, active suspensions, because automatic, covered by four patents. During systems from other brands, the Aprilia concept is distinguished in particular by the absence of predetermined profiles (comfort, sport, etc.). On the dashboard, only the motorcycle load will be specified: Solo, Solo suitcase, Duo, Duo suitcase or a new Automatic mode. The preload is then applied to the shock absorber by spring stress via a piston compressing an oil reservoir housed under the rear loop. On the fork, it may be necessary to adjust this value by a traditional screw on the right tube..

Then comes the automatic adjustment of the hydraulics, when driving, derived from automotive techniques integrating the Sky-Hook and Acceleration Driven algorithms. This method makes it possible to manage the various oscillations measured at numerous points. Both in the dynamic phases of use (acceleration, braking, change of angles) and the quality of the coating encountered, the suspension travel is measured. The left fork tube contains a pressure sensor acting on a valve while another is attached to the rear frame and determines the swingarm travel. But the engine speed is also taken into account, because it is a source of vibrations. All the information processed thus makes it possible to respond to the slow and rapid speed movements (high and low frequencies) of the suspensions at any time, adapting more finely than the mechanical systems. The threshold values are pushed back, allowing more important variables and therefore comfort and efficiency ditto.

Fork adjustment is automatic with the ADD system

In the saddle

The Caponord Rally sees its saddle modified for even more comfort and is relatively accessible with 840 mm of height. However, its marked seat width at the level of the tank strikes this point. In addition, the footrests could be moved further back, which may, during maneuvers, interfere with the legs. Reasonably flexed, the latter enjoy a significant place. The bust remains straight and the hands are raised to catch the handles. These automatically include hand guards and are pre-wired for optional heating. The levers benefit from spacing adjustments.

Handles are fitted with hand guards and prepared for the heating system

Barely curved, the large hanger dominates a single and vast digital ovoid screen. Particularly complete, it includes a bar-graph tachometer in the upper part, surmounting a large tachometer. On both sides are displayed fuel gauge and engine temperature. Then come the indicators of the map selected, the gear engaged, the level of traction control and the chosen preload. In the low central position, via the mode button on the left stalk, scrolls a partial double integrating each one: odometer, clock, maximum speed, speed and duration of the trip. The whole is clear and precise, but forgets outside temperature and average fuel consumption. Basic, cruise control will enhance your journeys on motorways.

More technological or anecdotal, Aprilia has been offering, since 2012, a system allowing you to connect your vehicle to a smartphone (and therefore to the internet). Called A-MP, Aprilia Multimedia Platform, it is an on-board computer which, once the free application has been downloaded, allows simultaneous viewing via Bluetooth, data such as speed, engine speed as well as power, engine torque in real time, acceleration, tilt angle, instantaneous consumption…. and average.

With around 260 kg in running order, the Caponord Rally requires a little caution when maneuvering with the engine off but shows good balance. Finally, the mirrors are easily adjusted, returning a wide and vibration-free image.

In the city

Hoarse, deep, the V2’s voice immediately charms with its sporty accents. Before leaving, we will choose its suspension setting and that of the ATC, not modifiable en route. On the contrary, adjustable while driving by pressing on the starter, we will try the adapted engine maps. Like two years ago, I will first remember Rain! In fact, the choice is judicious and appreciably calms the devil of Noale, quick to pounce if one lets go of him. Its flexibility is significantly improved, allowing in 6 ° a regime of 2,500 revolutions for 60 km / h and without too much reluctance on adapted reminders.

Aprilia Caponord 1200 Rally on the road

Pleasant, the reduced turning radius makes the machine efficient in confined spaces. The Caponord Rally weaves its way through the urban world with ease, but retains the firmness of its clutch lever. Fortunately, the box locks precisely and smoothly, accepting to mount on the fly without hesitation..

Although at ease in the urban element, the transalpine eagerly awaits more space to release its ardor.

Motorway and expressways

A major asset of the machine, the Aprilia twin is a monster of character as soon as you twist the right rubber. The Caponord Rally then propels itself towards the horizon in an exciting cavernous rumble. The thrust seems never to end as the boulder is at ease in the towers. Briskly crossing 200 km / h, the trail impresses with its length.

At stabilized speed, 4,700 laps legal, we also appreciate a mastered soundtrack, ideal on long journeys. And for even more serenity, engage the cruise control. This has no modulation and therefore needs to be re-actuated.

The new screen offers good protection at high speed

Protection improves with the new bubble. At 130 km / h and bubble in high position, only the shoulders are subjected to the air flow. The rest of the body is well protected, even from the rain, thanks to the shapes of the sides. Likewise, the radiators placed low deflect a good part of the elements. We can therefore cut the road with serenity, without fear of anything other than boredom on the priced tape. And to counter this, the Caponord Rally has serious arguments.

Departmental

To travel happily, join the road network where the Italian excels. Sport mode engaged, the Caponord Rally then demonstrates an all Latin character and impresses with its impetuosity. As full as an ostrich egg, the twin does not drop anything in the ferrule. Its incredible availability allows it to evolve on one or two reports. Also count on the escapement to mark the pace.

The block sends heavy to all floors. Very available, it pulls with force from 4000 rpm on the intermediates to "explode" then without weakening, until the red zone. Because the big twin likes to take turns, to the point that we sometimes forget to go up a gear, so high speeds are natural to him.

Demonstrative and efficient, the Italian twin loves virolos

Despite its 19 "front wheel, the Aprilia is still as easy to register on the angle. Precise, it is placed in a curve with ease and natural. The electronic suspensions have clearly improved, no longer generating inappropriate reactions. Remaining rather comfortable on all occasions, the damping remains under control and effectively limits mass transfers. Parameterized in Auto mode, the Caponord Rally adapts itself to the arrival of a passenger or any other additional load . An obvious advantage, which adapts continuously to the riding style. However, we regret the impossibility of customizing these settings according to your own criteria..

Not very intrusive on the road, but vigilant, the traction control fully fulfills its role. Its implementation is transparent, devoid of jerks, ensuring to curb the excess exuberance of the twin. We can also count on the front calipers whose implementation is as progressive as powerful if necessary. Finally, if by chance a passage in a curve were optimistic, the rear brake would come to establish the trail on a more suitable trajectory. This will avoid taking the front lever which then slightly locks the steering, but less than on the standard model.

Offroad

If the protections make it possible to limit breakage, the Noale wader shows only moderately ease on soft or brittle ground. A high weight (260 kilos) and a low placed handlebars hardly help to feel serene. In addition, the road deflections of its suspensions do not make it a pioneer of virgin spaces..

The Caponord is not the most comfortable off the road

Part-cycle

Healthy and rigid, the Caponord Rally is more stable, but above all more natural on its electronic suspensions. The Italian seems all the more efficient and comfortable. Its fairly raised front axle requires a short grip, but then proves particularly agile and precise..

Braking

Powerful, incisive, the front calipers stop the crew without difficulty, under the supervision of a discreet ABS and adapted to a sporty piloting.

Comfort / Duo

Ergonomics on board remains another advantage of the machine, both for its pilot and for the space allocated to the passenger. Sitting comfort, leg flexion, general position…. the Caponord promises long journeys without fatigue.

The new luggage storage does not interfere with the accompanying person, thus making it easier to get on board. The silencer is always adjustable in height, in the absence of suitcases, to offer an even more sporty and aggressive look.

The saddle offers a pleasant seat for the rider and his passenger

Consumption

This time again, we really haven’t "typed" in the mechanics. However, the gauge quickly empties of its sliders. Quenching the thirst of a hyper toned 1200cc twin always seems tricky. The 300 km of autonomy announced will require a strong piloting. Rather, count on 250 units, or a consumption of nearly 9 liters in current use…. and above all exciting.

Conclusion

With this new opus of its sporty trail, Aprilia delivers a machine that is particularly well equipped and now more natural on its suspensions. Its expressive mechanics and lively geometry make this trail a versatile machine. An ever more convincing traveler in the Rally version, the Caponord also remains a dynamic and intoxicating roadster, a passionate alternative to sporting competitors in the segment..

The novelty is now displayed at € 16,499 (Caponord Travel Pack at € 16,149 with a discount of € 1,500). And Aprilia is also drawing an offer on its Rally, with € 1,978 additional equipment for € 1! (For the first 30 models, see Accessories pack)
A welcome solution for a very competitive price facing the ball of its contenders.

Its most logical rival is a certain Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Touring. At € 19,990, it seems very expensive. However, the Bolognese can boast of an even superior finish and mechanical performance. Another Italian, the MV Agusta Rivale GT EAS / ABS claims 13,190 €, highlighting a unique personality, but also a more spartan comfort.

Among the Japanese, the Kawasaki Versys 1000 ABS € 12,499 is also a challenger in terms of comfort and performance. Its equipment is also provided: ABS, KTRC variable traction control, central stand…. But no controlled damping. And for 1,000 € more the Grand Tourer pack gives suitcases with internal saddlebags and 47-liter top case.

Really more adventurous, the call rate for a BMW R 1200 GS Adventure is € 16,950. The queen of the category now displays breathtaking performances. It keeps intact its qualities of road, but also its capacities on rough tracks. In the same vein, the KTM 1190 Adventure EDS – TPMS charges only € 15,650. New muse, 1290 Super Adventure, priced at € 17,995, incorporates the latest assistance and suspension technologies from the Austrian firm. We will not forget the Suzuki VStrom 1000.

With its Rally evolution, the Caponord 1200 offers an attractive package, as much for its style, its engine personality as its electronics. With its cycle part with optimized operation, the transalpine is relaunching itself in the segment, in particular with a plethora of standard equipment offerings. What to take the leap?
