Better than its predecessor

The new MV Agusta Brutale 800 has lost some performance compared to its predecessor, but overall the fresh cell treatment did the naked bike very well. This gives the Italian new strength.

If you fall into the house with the door, everything revolves around the revised three-cylinder of course M.V Agusta Brutale 800. It is quite unusual for a new engine to be weaker than its predecessor. And nine horsepower less sounds a bit sobering. But that will certainly happen more often in the near future during the transition to the new Euro 4 regulations.

Better than its predecessor

Brutale 800 is better than its predecessor and, no, you don’t really miss the lost nine horsepower. How come Well, the basic character of the triple has remained for the time being. Sports fans of naked bikes should be happy about that. The three-cylinder is grumpy, hisses, runs aggressively rough and turns greedily up to the maximum power of 116 hp. That was absolutely successful for a sporty road sweeper. New pistons, cam profiles and valve timing play their part in this. The maximum torque of 83 Nm is now 400 rpm earlier than before, which is certainly not a disadvantage when snapping out of the corners.

Better engine tuning

So that you can enjoy it all around – and this is the first clear improvement to the predecessor – the new engine set-up has become much better. In the three defined mappings Rain, Normal and Sport, the MV Agusta Brutale 800 now accelerates much more smoothly. In normal mode so good that you can stroll around with it. In this mode, the maximum power is also limited to 90 hp.

For chases over the house route, the sport mode is very direct and delivers the full 116 hp at 11,500 rpm. In addition, the Brutale pilot can put together his own desired mapping and permanently save it under “Custom”. ABS control behavior, throttle response, maximum power, engine braking torque, torque curve and speed limit can be determined according to taste.

The traction control of the new MV Agusta Brutale 800 can be regulated separately in eight stages. The adjustment buttons for mapping, traction control and the operation of the display are successful. Everything is now very easy with push buttons on the left and right of the handlebar – even while driving. One cannot help but get the impression that MV is now paying more attention to details that were previously neglected.

No loss of handiness

The second significant improvement concerns the handling of the MV Agusta Brutale 800 and is due to the new frame. The steering head on the tubular space frame was changed so that the caster increased from 95 to 103.5 millimeters. The total wheelbase is now 1,400 millimeters, an increase of 20 millimeters compared to the predecessor.

This ensured that the new MV Agusta Brutale 800 no longer moves around the steering head in long, fast corners, even in deep lean angles. Now you can bend in a super sporty way with the MV and pull the exact line you want with a firm pull on the gas until you exit the curve. However, it has not lost anything of its almost legendary handiness. The Brutale reacts wonderfully directly to the steering impulse and, with the new Pirelli Rosso III, tilts completely without resistance.

Better ergonomics

The ergonomics are also better. The pilot sits very actively close to and sportily over the steering head. Everything falls into the hands of its own accord, and the committed knee angle pests less than it encourages committed motorcycling. The seat with the now distinctive cavity underneath is crisp, but not too hard upholstered. You can enjoy the wonderful and endlessly winding curves from Marbella up to Ronda and, in addition to the beautiful handling of the MV Agusta Brutale 800, you can also enjoy the hoarse, rattling sound of the three-cylinder. Because of course the Brutale has also become quieter with the Euro 4 homologation, but the MV still passes enough of this beguiling hiss from the now somewhat more massive three-ender to the driver’s ear. The airbox has also been changed for less background noise in favor of the environment. So you don’t have to miss anything about the brutal sound.

New MV Agusta Brutale 800 is not a lamb

The suspension setup has also been optimized. What has remained is the fundamentally tight setup, which also underlines the sportiness of the MV Agusta Brutale 800. The responsiveness of the fully adjustable Marzocchi fork is pleasing and offers sufficient comfort on undulating ground. At the rear, the fully adjustable Sachs strut operates just as sportily and tightly. If the surface becomes very choppy, it may seem a little uncomfortable to the sensitive rider, the MV still hasn’t turned out to be a lamb.

This is also demonstrated by the Brembo brake on the new MV Agusta Brutale 800. It decelerates wonderfully, precisely metered and extremely determined. However, it does not have a brutal initial bite, so you can apply the rubbers very gently and then slow them down progressively.

So is everything peace, joy, pancakes? Nearly. Even a very sporty driver is still annoyed by the clearly noticeable constant-speed jolting in the partial load range when the traffic situation does not allow violent gasping. Nevertheless, the current revision for the three-cylinder Brutale means a significant step forward towards better manners and increased everyday usability.
