In red and black, the 800 Brutale Rosso manages to stand out effortlessly. Its design already makes a lot of it, its name stirs the flame, its engine rattles the flavors of Italy..
Under this qualifier ‘Rosso’ hides MV-Agusta’s desire to offer more democratic access to the range.. Varese’s communication presents this Brutale as a more affordable model than the RR, with less power and a less shy presentation. It’s not wrong, but it is above all a standard 800 Brutale that we have simplified a little to bring down the price.
The RR makes 140 hp – The Brutale of today in slap 110, like that of the previous generation. The 3 cylinder has retained its watts and torque, as well as all technical specifications. However, the price has plummeted by almost 2,000 euros. How did MV manage to scrape the slate ?
The economy goes through a single choice of colors, improved manufacturing processes and a slightly less advanced finish. The electronics remain, just like the chassis and the charm of transalpine production.
We will not speak thus of novelty but more of an evolution … Of a restyling? … Of an update. Coming after the serious evolution of the previous 800 Brutale. Starting with its mechanics. Let’s go back to this moment:
With real thoroughbreds that should be appreciated as it should be: Italian mechanics. Full of character and watts, with great emotion. The brand had to deal with fairly drastic Euro4 standards. How was the 3 cylinder doing? Not too bad, and he defended it. The torque progressed, surpassing the old one over the entire rev range and delivering 90% of its force from 3800 rpm.
Where the boiler felt its leaded wings, it was on the power side. In 2018, the stud fell to 110 whipped nags at 11,500 rpm. To achieve this result, the Brutale had to prick the Turismo Veloce its camshafts and pistons, review the intake ducts, adjust the exhaust line and increase the volume of the plenum chamber. Of course, the electronics were reprogrammed accordingly.
A finding ? A bit less powerful, a little slower, spinning under the 240 instead of exceeding them, but more available and more fulfilled. Few people will complain about this dynamic facelift.
In the frenzy of development of scholarly fleas, MV-Agusta is not left out; far from there. It continues to offer a serious package, with disconnectable ABS, Ride-by-Wire, 8-level traction control, multiple injection maps (4 including one customizable *), and the up & down EAS 2.0 shifter. With him, the upshift and downshift no longer requires the left hand.
The dashboard also needed a little sprucing up. And no need to look far: the B3 simply borrowed it from the Rivale. Too bad the fuel gauge is missing.
The feel of the road, the manly driving, the senses sharpened by the rhythm … An MV does not conceive them as a Japanese. It is much more direct, more singular, for those who understand that the emotion is lived alive. Miss Brutale retains her confidence in a 43mm Marzocchi inverted fork, a steel trellis frame connected to beautiful aluminum frames, Sachs damping to contain the movement of the single-sided swingarm and quality braking. Dual 320mm discs gripped by 4-piston Brembo radial pincers – rear 220mm disc will only have a two-piston clamp.
These elements make it well with a rigor difficult to fault; and comfort for enthusiasts.
It is not easy to modernize a Brutale, let alone an MV-Agusta. The hand must be sure and skillful, the talent certain, the work flawless. A choice of character. The 800 Brutale Rosso also wants to appeal to young drivers by offering a bridable version in A2.
