Yamaha TDR 125 versus MZ RT 125
Suitable for everyday use, large 125cc cinema for a small budget. Yamaha TDR 125 versus MZ RT 125.
Eight-liter machines. Real motorcycles? Why, surely. Freedom, driving fun, independence. For example with the MZ RT 125. Four-stroke. Functional. And: economical.
Consumes little more than three liters per 100 kilometers, costs 6490 marks. Could come from Swabia, but comes from Zschopau, Saxony. And has set a milestone in 125cc engine construction: double camshaft, four-valve technology. A completely new construction from Zschopau. Make full use of the 15 hp limit.
The competition from the Far East has little to offer against this innovative economy vehicle. The Japanese rely on tried and tested technology in this class. Their shot glass singles only manage 15 hp in two-stroke cycles. With the sound of a biscuit saw. Yamaha’s TDR 125, for example. It’s been around for seven years. Sit on it, drive off, feel good. The egg-laying woolly milk sow, no question about it. But at what price? 8,790 marks bomb a crater in the cash register. On top of that. The TDR is a drunkard, sucking in five liters of gasoline plus a shot of two-stroke oil for 100 kilometers – makes a whopping 320 marks more fuel over 5000 kilometers compared to the MZ. The point goes to Europe.
And the one for design? It looks compact and delicate, the MZ. When looking at it, the tank and seat dominate. Takes getting used to. But independently. In addition, important things are not covered up. Maintenance friendly. And people-friendly: the bench is long and comfortable. Also for the pillion passenger. The TDR would look good as a larger-displacement bike. The technology is well hidden under a plastic cover. The equipment is also opulent: cooling water indicator, indicators mounted in rubber, bridge frame, luggage rack. Nevertheless, one is looking for the 2300 mark price difference to the MZ. The design point? Well, go to Europe. Courage must be rewarded.
I.When driving, the TDR is a bit more agile and direct in all situations. The engine goes to work more spontaneously, suspension and damping outclass the softly tuned Saxon bread-and-butter machine. However, the TDR has no chance against the MZ front brake. Bites like a fighting dog. Sahlflex cables! The point goes to Japan anyway. Which in the end must feel defeated. With their own weapons. Once they offered a lot of technology for little money.
