Everything you need to know about the Kawasaki Versys 1000

Everything about the new Versys 1000
Discovered by the Moto Journal du net a month ago (see our) and partially discovered yesterday morning (read), the Kawasaki Versys 1000 has finally presented all its technical characteristics to our special envoys at the Milan Motorcycle Show EICMA 2011.
Taking pride of place on the vast Kawasaki stand in Milan, Akashi’s trail-roader tries a very original approach to carve out croupiers to the reference BMW R1200GS and its rivals: the Ducati Multistrada 1200, Yamaha Super Tenere 1200, Moto Guzzi Stelvio and other KTM SMTs, but also the new Honda Crosstourer and Triumph Explorer 2012.
Breaking with the usual technical codes in this category, the Versys 1000 indeed unveils an engine architecture for the least unexpected: a 4-cylinder in line of 1043 cc directly resulting from the hot Z1000 roadster. !
Bulkier than a twin and above all less "sensational" at low revs, a 4-legged nonetheless has advantages likely to appeal to heavy riders: extreme flexibility, as well as greater reach and power than most twins. and 3-cylinders.
Aware of the specific requirements of this category, Kawasaki has however left aside the race for power in order to promote relaunch. Amputated by 20 hp and 8 Nm of torque, the Versys 1000 thus displays 118 hp and 102 Nm (in Full), but above all a torque curve much better filled on the first part of the tachometer than on the "Zed" ( see diagram opposite).
To achieve this result, Japanese engineers also shortened the duration and lift of the valves (valves and springs are also specific to the Versys 1000) and redesigned the combustion chamber..
Likewise, the intake ducts are longer on the novelty and its gearbox ratios have been recalibrated: the first two gears pull shorter, while the top gears are longer than on the Z1000..
