Vyrus 986 M2 Strada in the test

For many years, Bimota has been producing extraordinary machines in Rimini. A small group of enthusiasts build at least as exclusive motorcycles there under the brand name Vyrus. MOTORRAD employee Alan Cathcart drove the Vyrus 986 M2 Strada with a four-cylinder engine.

AT.Adding lights and indicators to a racing machine doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be happy with them on the road. But if you can take six years to vote, the chances are pretty good. Vyrus virtuoso Ascanio Rodorigo built a Moto2 racer in 2011, which he is now putting on the road.

Vyrus 986 M2 Strada is now the first machine with an inline four cylinder from Japan, the engine of the Honda CBR 600 RR. Rodorigo only got 50 engines, Honda will soon cease production of the engine.

The before-keep stub axle steering is reminiscent of the Bimota Tesi, and the Vyrus inspires with its incredibly dramatic design. Rodorigo designed the carbon case together with the Japanese designer Yutaka Igarashi and ex-Ducati designer Sam Matthews, once the right-hand man of Pierre Terblanche. The much more compact Honda engine allows an extremely short wheelbase of just 1350 millimeters. The machine is held together by an upside-down Omega made of milled Ergal aluminum. Without petrol, the Vyrus weighs an incredible 151 kilograms, with a 75 kilogram driver the weight distribution is exactly fifty-fifty.

The two swing arms are supported by fully adjustable YSS struts made in Thailand. Despite the compact appearance, there is quite a comfortable space on the racer. Anyone who has ever driven a Bimota Tesi inevitably looks for parallels. The Tesis, which is thick compared to the Vyrus, didn’t really turn very precisely, especially if there were bumps in the road. The Vyrus handles this much better. It pulls its course rather undeterred, you just have to guide the handlebars loosely. Braking in an inclined position is still fascinating. Because like the Tesi, the Vyrus also separates the steering and suspension and even puts away suicidal braking points with ease. You just have to force yourself to brake so late.

Your driving style changes completely over time. You put a lot more strain on the front tire than with a conventional motorcycle. "It is telling that Kevin Schwantz holds the lap record in Assen for over ten years ", philosophizes Vyrus farmer Rodorigo."That shows that the motorcycle industry is hardly moving forward. Telescopic forks are used – components that are now 50 millimeter thick. For me that is a standstill. We want to take a fresh look at the technology of the motorcycle. "

The Vyrus 986 M2 is an exquisite and brilliantly crafted masterpiece, which of course has a corresponding price at almost 38,000 euros. But the nice thing about it is that in addition to the aesthetics, the driving dynamics also fit. Maybe Rodorigo should also think about a three-cylinder …
