The most legendary V-Four under this sun is the one that fires the Honda VFR 750 R RC 30. And around this fabulous engine a chassis was built that can still inspire today. PS did a few laps on the Vau der Vaue.

HThe titanium muffler, hanging on the left under the massive rear, cools down with a ticking sound. With the helmet in my hand, I stand in front of this "old carrot", amazed and enthusiastic. Wow, what kind of awesome rounds were those? I still can’t really grasp what happened to me on this motorcycle. Stop, let’s take a step back. Almost twenty minutes ago I reluctantly accepted the offer to drive this Honda VFR 750 R, also known under the factory code RC 30, over the track. I was scared off by the age (biblical 25 years), the low sitting position (low rider sends his looks) and the sum insured (hefty 40,000 euros). Also, I couldn’t imagine that such an old motorcycle could be fun on the race today. "Just wait a lad," hisses the RC 30.
Okay, the 750er appeals to me visually while standing. Its proportions are still very consistent and, compared to other bikes of its age, downright graceful. Technically, the Honda inspires anyway. For example because of the titanium connecting rods, the gear-driven camshafts, the single-sided swing arm and the adjustable chassis. At the end of the 80s, she had everything that was needed to win races from scratch. And she did too! In 1988 and 1989 he led Fred Merkel to the Superbike World Championship. Victories on the Isle of Man and countless national titles followed. Well, that was a good 100 years ago, but whether it still drives well from today’s perspective?

The driver sits deep in the Honda VFR 750 R RC 30.
After a gentle push, I land in the saddle of this former alpha male. A slightly stronger one is needed to bring the V-Four below me to life. The first round is dominated by gentle curling. The large dome of the windshield ensures a sheltered feeling, the narrow tank allows a tight knee. The RC 30 and I get used to each other – the lap times fall in proportion to the increased driving pleasure. I suddenly realize that this motorcycle must have been an incredibly powerful weapon back then.
With its 17-inch forged magnesium wheels and the measured 128 PS on the rear wheel, the Wellbrock VFR 750 R drives like a good 600 at the beginning of this millennium! Because of "old grinder", the RC 30 can be thrown playfully into the corners, burns precisely and stably through fast arcs and fires powerfully out of them if the gas is opened above 7500 rpm. It can be angled violently, an RC 30 can only touch the whole side if the pilot has overdone it. But it’s a long, fun way to get there.

Only the ergonomics reminds you that you are not sitting on the latest material. The pilot acts deep in the bike instead of high up – but what the heck, that’s how it used to be. The turn and thus the first meeting with this racing legend is over much too early. I dismount full of euphoria and adrenaline in my blood, and the calculator is already rattling in my mind’s eye. But it is quickly recognized that such a good RC 30 will probably always remain a dream. Anyway, at least I had the pleasure with her for a few laps.
