Since the early 2000s, the displacement of roadsters has continued to increase: today, the 847 cc cube, and the engine installed in the is a twin-cylinder of 1301 cc….

Until then indifferent to this competition of the largest displacement (read our), Honda ended up cracking … but just a little! Japanese engineers wanted to keep "a truly midsize 4-cylinder, distinguished by its specifications and styling".

By increasing the stroke of the pistons to 46 mm (against 42.5 mm on the old model, for the same bore of 67 mm), Honda limits the increase in displacement to 50 cc, so that the engine "totally new"of the CB650F cube exactly 649 cc.

Paradoxically, the 650 is less powerful than the 600: the new CB650F is content to output 87 horsepower at 11,000 rpm (64 kW according to the technical sheet on the second page of this article), while the old one spat 102 ch 1000 revs higher.

However, the balance of power is reversed when it comes to maximum torque: with the new Honda 4-legged, the rider has 63 Nm from 8000 rpm, whereas he had to whip the old mill up to 10,500 rpm to exit 63.5 Nm.

The Japanese further assure that "the 16-valve cylinder head with double overhead camshaft uses a direct cam activation system and a timing diagram that ensures a high level of torque and good maneuverability below 4000 rpm".

Particularly flexible therefore, the engine would retain "the characteristic character and sound of in-line 4-cylinders", two essential assets to compete with the competition’s twin and three-cylinder engines !

Powered by the essential PGM-FI electronic injection via 30 mm airboxes and 32 mm injection bodies (36 mm on the previous model), the new 4-cylinder also attempts to be more sober at the pump.

The 2014 CB650F is rated at 206 kg fully loaded, or 6 kg more than the 600, but the difference drops to 3 kg once the ABS is installed: 208 kg for the 650 cc against 205 kg for the 600.

The new generation of engineers also chose to open the caster angle by half a degree (25.5 °) and increase caster by 12 mm (101 mm now), the wheelbase being longer. overall of 15 mm (1450 mm).

In terms of suspensions, the CB650F is satisfied with a fork (not inverted and not adjustable) of 41 mm at the front and renews the proven solution of the old model at the rear: a mounted single shock absorber – without links – on a swingarm with a new design, but still in cast aluminum.

On the braking side, the new Honda roadster is inspired by the NC 700 series (which rose to 750 in 2014!): "240mm rear disc is formed from 320mm front disc, saving cost for customer"… and for the builder !

"Dual dual piston calipers at the front and single piston at the rear provide great stopping power", promise the Japanese before specifying that a"two-channel ABS system is available as an option". We will occasionally note the adoption of new rims with extremely thin spokes.

Always so reassuring, the new CB650F is also practical: the tank, for example, is mounted on hinges at the rear, in order to "easy access to the top engine for maintenance"- and reduce the price of labor during revisions ?!

The saddle, now 10mm (810mm) taller, should be narrow enough to allow easy access to the ground. Finally, a new two-part dashboard should be more readable than the current narrow model.

With the choices made at the level of the cycle part in particular, we expect from this new Honda 2014 a competitive price, an essential asset compared to the bigger – but more expensive – roadsters available on the market. !

New CBR 650F

The next CB650F will be one month ahead of its streamlined version, called CBR650F: the front headlight of the V-shaped roadster will then be replaced by the fork crown of the new small sporty Honda, fitted as standard with ABS..

"Compared to those of the CB650F, the shock absorber and the fork increase the spring stiffness (with adjustment in damping accordingly) to adapt it to the sportier character of the CBR650F", warns Honda.
