Honda sometimes goes completely off the beaten track, both to clear new tracks and to demonstrate its ability to innovate and surprise … In the tradition of the late, the new NM4 Vultus is one of these surprising, daring and unclassifiable motorcycles !
Carte blanche for young Honda designers !
“Honda is a huge company, we make all kinds of motorcycles and sometimes it’s great that we can make a new bike just because we can and want to do it, rather than because we ‘have to’ do it. .. ", says Keita Mikura, responsible for this unexpected NM4 project" Vultus "(which means figure, face or face in Latin).
"The NM4 Vultus exists because of a passion that comes from deep within our company. We really wanted to create something special, not just in the motorcycle business but something that is unique in the world", continues the Japanese, visibly delighted to have had the elbow room to develop this new motorcycle built on the platform of .
Under its futuristic-looking fairings – especially the front, with these indicators in the form of rows of LEDs – we therefore find the economical 745 cc in-line twin-cylinder set at 270 °, which develops the same values of power and torque. than on the latest generation of, and: 54.8 hp at 6250 rpm and 68 Nm at 4750 rpm.
Fairly linear and voluntarily limited to 6500 rpm to maintain gasoline consumption, this engine is however torquey, available and above all very sober: Honda announces "3.53 l / 100 km" on its Vultus, ie a theoretical autonomy approaching 330 km with the 11.6 liters of the tank. As standard, the twin-cylinder receives the dual-clutch transmission which offers three operating modes (D or S in automatic or shifting gears on the handlebars).
This engine is mounted in a tubular steel frame whose dimensions suggest a stability difficult to fault (1645 mm of wheelbase and 33 ° caster angle). Firmly stationed on its large 200 mm wide rear tire, this bike, announced for 245 kg all full, should therefore be rigorous on the angle. Hopefully this NM4 Vultus will keep the excellent balance found on the NCs and their derivatives, such as the for example, so that it is easy to put it there, on the angle !
As on the NC750, braking is entrusted to a single 320 mm front "petal" disc, clamped by a 2-piston caliper. An ABS – not combined – is fitted as standard. A little bigger than that of the NC750 (43 mm in diameter against 41), the telescopic fork of the NM4 Vultus frolics over 125 mm, 25 mm more than its rear monoshock.
Gam-berg-gee !
Beyond its look inspired by "Japanimation" – according to Honda – and its generous dimensions (933 mm announced in the retro!), The NM4 Vultus surprises with certain particularly "chiades" details. The young engineers asked for the project – aged 20 to 30 – first decided to use only diodes to provide lighting, both front and rear..
The digital instrumentation is "connected" to the motorcycle: its light background changes color depending on the transmission mode engaged! The backlight is blue in D mode, pink in S and red in manual ("MT"). "However, according to his mood of the day, the pilot can also choose from 5 other color ranges, or 25 shades in total", specify the geek engineers not a little proud of their "discovery" !
More traditionally, the motorcycle carries a 12 V outlet and two storage spaces of 1 and 3 liters. A pair of optional cases can also be installed in order to increase the volume of cargo, a priori without sacrificing too much the line since Honda ensures that they would be "perfectly integrated" at the rear of the motorcycle..
Finally, the last original detail: the passenger seat can be raised (solo, of course!) To transform it into a backrest for the pilot. And to be sure that every rider appreciates this modularity at its fair value, Honda has provided possibilities for adjustments to this "seat-back" (+ or – 25 mm in length and three possible tilt angles). Very well seen !
The Honda NM4 Vultus will optionally be fitted with a high screen, heated grips, suitcases and an alarm system. Questioned by MNC, Honda France announces an arrival in for "the month of June". The price is not yet known by the French subsidiary, but the Site estimates it to be between 10,500 and 12,500 euros. To be continued: stay connected !
