News - The big Americans pass the six! - Used HARLEY-DAVIDSON

The arrival of the new 1584 cc Twin Cam 96 engine, accompanied by a new intake and exhaust system and a new transmission, shakes up American Big Twins of all families. First look at the 2007 vintage.

At Harley-Davidson, in order to consolidate recent good results, especially in Europe (read), 2007 will notably see the appearance of a new engine: the Twin Cam 96 / 96B, replacing the Twin Cam 88 / 88B on all the models "Big Twin" of the brand.

"The Twin Cam 96 was the largest engine development program in Harley-Davidson history", welcomes Skip Metz, director of the" Big Twin Powertrain "program.

New Big Twin

"There are over 700 new parts in the Twin Cam 96 / 96B. The only parts that have not been modified are the cylinders, rocker arms, rocker covers and other parts in the upper part of the engine. Crankshafts, connecting rods, engine and gearbox housings and all transmission parts are new. We believe this new generation of Twin Cams is the start of a new era for V-Twin engines.", adds the engineer.

Maintaining the same bore as the old 1450cc block, the new Twin Cam 96 has a longer stroke of 9.2mm (111.1mm in total) and therefore reaches 1584cc. Equipped with internal balance shafts, the new Twin will be fitted "rigid"on all Softail models and will offer them a whopping 123 Nm of torque at 3,400 rpm.

New intake and exhaust system

Another innovation for next year stems from this new engine: a new active intake and exhaust system which, according to the manufacturer, "significantly increases power, torque and sound quality while meeting European noise and gas emission standards". Harley therefore promises motorcycles that are quieter at low speed in the city, but more efficient and more noise on the road..

The 2007 Fat Boy, for example, claims 15% more power and 19% more torque, with a noise "even softer and more unique", ignites the American. In summary:"although the increases in power and torque vary depending on the motorcycle, all models in this new collection have been boosted".

New transmission

The transmission has also been modified in order to improve the behavior of the Big Twins: we note that "adding a sixth gear with a lower gear reduces RPM by 11% in sixth, compared to the old Big Twin 5-speed transmission". From now on, we stall at 120 km / h at 2,859 rpm (formerly 3,227 rpm) and we accelerate more clearly thanks to shorter gear ratios.

The helical gears – developed on VRSCs – offer better resistance and lower noise while the clutch and speed controls have – again – been softened. Finally, the manufacturer ensures that the crankcase oil change frequencies are halved: crankcase oil change every 16,000 km and transmission oil change every 32,000 km. What to cruise more serenely, in short !

Dyna range

All chrome outside, the 2007 FXDC Dyna Super Glide Custom has the long and low silhouette of its sisters. Its mini handlebars tilted back dominate a new Fat Bob tank with integrated speedometer and contact.

"Powered by the new 1584cc Twin Cam 96 engine, the Custom Super Glide delivers silky smooth power (sic!) and a rigid and agile chassis", announces the manufacturer. The Super Glide Custom is available in eight solid colors and two two-tone and should be available in Europe from November 2006.

The FXDB Dyna Street Bob 2007 still inspired by the minimalist "bobber" style of the 60s custom choppers: without accessories – nothing is planned to accommodate a passenger – Harley confirms that it is made for "the great lone wolves". An entire program…

Its mini handlebars Ape-Hanger – literally "monkey hanger" – is still placed high above its traditional Fat Bob tank, but the new finish Wrinkle-Black on the battery cover, the black dashboard and belt guard accentuate its personality. The Street Bob is available in six solid colors and a new two-tone Olive Pearl / Vivid Black

For fans of the rase-mottes, the FXDL Dyna Low Rider still offers its saddle at 655 mm from the ground, its centralized foot controls and its rear handlebars. "The ergonomics of the motorcycle are ideal for those looking for comfort", specifies the American who offers for this model seven solid colors and three two-tone.

For larger riders, the FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide continues to offer its stretched lines, 21-inch spoke rims, Bobtail mudguard and handlebars Ape-Hanger of 32 mm. The Wide Glide is available in eight solid colors and three two-tone.

Softail range

New FXSTC Softail Custom is nothing less than "a must for those nostalgic for the 70s and for the spirit that reigned there: it encourages peace and calm on the road, the legs and the look ahead ", Harley Davidson warns. It’s a blend of chopper style and the comfort of the "luxurious two-seater seat with backrest".

All excited by its 2007 novelties, Harley has not forgotten its old models, starting with the FLSTF Fat Boy who this year "grows, widens and brightens", sums up the Milwaukee manufacturer. In addition to increased horsepower and its new 6-speed transmission, the Fat Boy gets a new 200mm tire mounted on a perforated wheel and wrapped in a shortened fender..

In the middle of the beast is a new two-tone two-seater saddle behind the traditional Fab Bob tank decorated with a new custom graphics obviously to match the fenders and a band around the tank, itself matching the saddle. Finally, it has a new 17 "perforated front wheel, a chrome front fork nacelle and Risers Bare Knuckle giants that support the handlebars with concealed wiring. No two-tone colors for this model, but eleven solid colors.

A new passenger seat, new chrome spoked wheels with chrome fog lights, studded leather trim and an FL front fender that wraps a wide tire support the touring vocation of the car. FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic which will be available in five solid colors and four two-tone.

The FLSTSC Softail Springer Classic 2007 retains its retro look but adopts new indicators on the handlebars, "Beach Bar style", specifies Harley. A summary modification combined with the"comfortable saddle that allows the rider to adopt the posture of a king of the road", still ignites the American.

Thanks to its lowered suspension, the FLSTN Softail Deluxe still hugs the road as much. Its handlebars and risers set back, as well as its seat at 622 mm, make it the lowest motorcycle of all Harleys. Finally, the sixth and last model in the Softail range, the FXSTB Night Train 2007 still fulfills its role of Bad Boy: the "dark side"Softails at Harley. In 2007, it will be available in four colors and two two-tone.

Touring range

The impressive American Touring family also benefits from the latest Harley evolutions: new Twin Cam 96 engine with 1584 cc, 6-speed transmission, active intake and exhaust system and relaxed clutch. It thus acquires according to its creator "an extra dimension for long trips".

The FLHX Street Glide 2007, "ideal for riders looking for a pronounced custom look combined with superior Touring comfort", will be available in six solid colors.

The FLHT Electra Glide Standard, "Comfortable and uncompromising tourer or ideal canvas for artists looking for a Tourer to customize"(sic), will be available in Vivid Black, Fire Red Pearl and Pacific Blue Pearl.

The FLHTCU Ultra Classic Electra Glide, " synonymous with maximum performance and luxurious comfortAccording to Harley, will be available in six solid colors and six two-tone.

The FLHR Road King – which, again according to Harley, "combines timeless style with the comfort of the Touring chassis"-, will be marketed in ten colors including four two-tone.

Finally, the embodiment of his "glorious past", Harley Davidson offers in 2007 its FLHRC Road King Classic in four solid colors and six two-tone. And who can do the most can do the least, as the maintenance in the catalog of the FLHRS Road King Custom always so stripped.

Sportster range

50 years after the launch of the first Sportster, the complete 2007 range comes standard with the ESPFI system. "In order to incorporate this new system, the Harley-Davidson team redesigned the frame and redesigned the rear fender, saddle, tank, exhaust and intake system.", points out the Yankee.

The 2007 Sportsters are fitted with new gauges with a clock on the odometer, a reserve indicator, a totalizer and a trip meter. The handling of the Sportster should also be improved, Harley believes, "thanks to a relaxation of the clutch by 8% and the front brake lever from 11 to 14%".

On the Sportster 883 models, work was also directed towards improving performance: "a new camshaft allows the Sportster 883 to generate more torque at a lower speed, giving the rider a more responsive throttle and better performance at rated 2,500 rpm", explains the manufacturer learnedly.

No other modification concerns the Custom and the R (read). The Custom will be available in five solid colors and three two-tone colors, while the 2007 XL883 R is offered in Vivid Black, Mirage Orange Pearl and Pewter Pearl..

On the other hand, the XL 883R Sportster 883L rider keeps getting closer to the ground: in 2007, he will be 641 mm above the tarmac level with new fork springs, a new kickstand and new footrest. Available next year, the XL 883L will be offered in eight solid colors and with a unique graphic on the tank..

At the same time, the 1200s were only slightly overhauled: new instruments – clock, reserve indicator, trip meter and trip odometer – were added to the raised tachometer and extended handlebar wiring allows fans of customization. to work more calmly.

The XL 1200R Sportster 1200 Roadster – "agile and fast", recalls the manufacturer – will be available in seven solid colors. The 1200 Low -"low, long and powerful style"as everyone knows – is for its part offered in five solid colors and three two-tone. As for the 1200 Custom"powerful and stylish", it sports eight solid colors and four two-tone.

VRSC range

The latest addition to the American brand, this group of furious motorcycles now has two new arrivals: the VRSCDX Night Rod Special and the VRSCX (not available in France).

"Turbulent Brother of the Night Rod"as Harley presents it, the VRSCDX Night Rod Special is "really packed with style and performance". It is true that its Revolution 1130 cc engine and its blackened parts give it a threatening appearance. It will be available in Black Denim with Vivid Black“ racing stripe ”, or in Vivid Black with Black Denim“ racing stripe ”.

VRSCX side, "a 1250 cc Screamin ‘Eagle Revolution engine with Big Bore cylinders and upgraded cylinder heads"should according to Harley provide"123 horsepower and 116 Nm of torque", which increases horsepower significantly compared to the Revolution V-Twin 1130 cc. 240mm rear tire, Dragster style handlebars, forward controls, brushed front wheel with interwoven spokes, stylish windshield Dragster and a unique finish with Screamin ‘Eagle graphics – including a new version of the famous "Number 1" logo – make this bike "a safe bet from the VRSC range", details the manufacturer.

However, this tribute to the Screamin ’Eagle / Vance & Hines NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle racing team, produced in 400 copies, will not be released in France..

On the other hand, the V-Rod (six solid colors and three two-tone), the Night Rod (Vivid Black, Yellow Pearl and Pacific Blue Pearl) and the Street Rod (five solid colors, including the new Pacific Blue Denim and Pewter Denim) remain available in France !
