Yamaha XSR 900 in the HP driving report
MT-09 in retro dress
Content of
Yamaha is expanding the MT-09 kit and is bringing a modern bike in a retro look. First impressions from the presentation of the Yamaha XSR 900 in Fuerteventura.
Where is the latest bike technology available, who does best on the circuits and the country road: These questions move the world of horsepower. But in the quiet little room it is not only the editorial colleagues who sometimes hang out after days gone by, dreaming of the treasures of their youth and twenties. The big but is not lacking. Because the old rolls like YAmaha XS 650 and Co. nobody wants to stand in the garage. No power, no chassis, no enforcement systems – if an attack should be called, the only thing left in the curve whistle is the white flag.

Yamaha XSR 900 compared with the firmer chassis
However, Yamaha has fine-tuned the lively triplet for the new retro use. The set driving mode (A / B / Standard) is retained when restarting, an anti-hopping clutch ensures easy clutch operation and a ram-free rear wheel when downshifting harshly. Also welcome at the sloping junkies get-togethers: the new traction control of the Yamaha XSR 900, which regulates late in a sensitive or sporty way and can be switched off completely if necessary.
In addition, the Yamaha guys tightened the chassis compared to the MT-09 with more preload. The bobble dog is a thing of the past, a full driving experience sets in, but both the front and rear of the Yamaha XSR 900 could work more sensitively. This still applies to ABS, too, which comes up with rough control intervals and makes the rear wheel light when stopped hard.
Great highway drive
With the engine – except that the exhaust gases are now finding their way into the open in accordance with the Euro 4 standard – everything remained the same. That’s a good thing. After all, the Yamaha crossplane triple with its 850 cubic meters is a formidable drive on country roads. If necessary, sneaking around at very low speeds and in high gear, it can do well, and even provides an unexpectedly high amount of propulsion in this speed range. Between five and six thousand tours the three-cylinder of the Yamaha XSR 900 really comes to life, which fires right up to the top without breaking through the rev range.
If the hurried country road rider sits relatively deep in the motorcycle on the MT-09, with the handlebars in front of his belly, the tank cover, which has now been extended by five centimeters to the rear, noticeably pushes the pilot towards the rear . Together with the seat height, which has increased by 1.5 centimeters, this results in a stretched sitting position that makes swinging in the curve labyrinth a pleasure. But before the joy gets out of hand, take a quick look at the price tag. Yamaha calls for 9,495 euros for the Yamaha XSR 900. That’s 1,100 euros more than the MT-09. Not just a little. But there is a posh workmanship, many noble add-on parts made of aluminum and as a 60th anniversary version in the King Kenny look (300 euros surcharge) a hot variant for all Yamaha fans with a lot of racing in their blood.
