Yamaha YZ 450 F and Yamaha YZ 250 F in the driving report

Yamaha Crosser 2016

The revolution took place in 2010, when the unconventional 450cc engine with the upside down cylinder head was born. In 2016, evolution is the keyword. The driving report shows how the detailed measures affect the Yamaha YZ 450 F and the Yamaha YZ 250 F.

In 2010, the unconventional 450cc engine with an inverted cylinder head was created. 2014 also became the little sister Yamaha YZ 250 F converted in this style. Initially, this optically took some getting used to, was partly laughed at, but gradually the persistence seems to be paying off: The blue factory drivers are currently at the forefront in many championships. And the series material has also been further improved over the years.

Yamaha YZ 450 F is an electronic jump starter that should always keep the engine speed and slip in the optimal range. Basically, it works, even if a professional can certainly do it manually.

Engine now even smoother and with less drag torque

The engine of the Yamaha YZ 450 F, modified with camshafts with reduced valve overlap, now runs even smoother and with less drag torque. The driver can access preprogrammed mappings or configure them himself via an optional power tuner. The clutch and gearshift have also been optimized, but the manual force on the clutch lever is still quite high.

When it comes to the chassis, Yamaha is not following the current trend towards air suspension; many amateurs will welcome the lower maintenance requirements. Harder fork springs lift the front and push the balance further towards the rear. This is currently in fashion, but driving comfort suffers a little. However, stability on straights and neutrality in curves are improved.

Yamaha YZ 250 F now with better brakes

Like its big sister, the Yamaha YZ 250 F also got a more effective brake, otherwise the changes are limited to the drive. In fact, the quarter-liter four-stroke engine runs even more smoothly and with practically no engine brake, which makes it very easy to control.

Professionals may lack maximum speed, at the top the performance curve flattens out relatively early, and you often get into the speed limiter. At the bottom and in the middle, however, there is always a lot of pressure and agile maneuverability. As before, the Yamaha YZ 250 F represents an excellent overall package for the amateur, with comfortable suspension, excellent balance and easy drivability.
