Yamaha YZF-R 125 in the used purchase check
Model years 2008 to 2018
The smallest really big. Since its introduction in 2008, the Yamaha YZF-R 125 has not only delighted young people. So there is a lot going on on the used market.
The longings of many 16-year-olds finally materialized in 2008 in concrete form: As Yamaha, the hot one YZF-R 125 pushes the first happy buyers under the bum, veteran warriors on massive tourers find themselves naturally including the eight-liter class in the obligatory motorcycle greeting. Not only because the athlete with its single-cylinder engine adds astonishingly robust weight to the 141 kilograms, but also because the Japanese woman looks like the face of her bigger sister R1.
Sales figures are impressive
Okay, the narrow tires and the missing four-cylinder screeching give away who is coming towards you at second glance (and listening). But the little athlete gave the whole A1 driving license scene a new, self-confident face at the time, making the little ones really big. Is this interpretation going too far for you? Well, the sales figures for the 125 cc give hardly any doubt about its sustainable success.
Yamaha
The motor allows you to swim smoothly in city traffic without exhausting high speeds.
Measured against the number of new registrations, the small racing roll is one of the absolute top models from Yamaha. The first series of the YZF-R 125 alone found over 12,000 customers in Germany. During the entire construction period, the mini-racer practically never disappears from one of the podium places in its class. It looks correspondingly colorful on the used market today. The choice is huge and the decision is accordingly difficult. What to watch out for is written here.
engine
At the beginning of its construction period, the single-cylinder four-stroke engine with an overhead camshaft had to compete against the two-stroke competition from Italy – and prevailed brilliantly against them. What the water-washed, long-stroke four-valve engine conjures up from the combustion chamber is convincing in every respect. With a tame response, a powerful middle and high revving up to the limiter, the Yamaha shows the rear of the competition in combination with an excellently chosen gear ratio. To this day, the drive is rightly regarded as a true food lover: Consumption below three per 100 kilometers is not a real challenge.
landing gear
With a steel bridge frame, aluminum swing arm and 33 mm telescopic fork, the Japanese proves that conventional doesn’t have to mean bad. Even in the first series, the chassis shines with excellent stability, the fork does not twist even when anchored hard and keeps the 17-inch front wheel safely on course. Weighing just 141 kilograms, the handling is lively, the damping of the fork and shock absorber tolerate committed riding styles without showing any hardness on short bumps. From model year 2014, an upside-down fork ensures even better front wheel control – and a cooler look.

everyday life
Yamaha’s declared priority at the YZF: Sportiness. That is why one consciously accepted compromises in terms of comfort. It does offer enough space for a 125cc rider as well. The high seating position and the handlebars are not exactly pleasant in city traffic. The motor, which is easy to push even at low speeds, is even more so. It allows you to swim smoothly in city traffic without exhausting high speeds and is even good for one or the other overtaking maneuver on the country road.
security
For a long time, the Yamaha offspring had to get along without any anti-lock devices. An ABS will only be available from 2016 for an extra 400 euros. In the Euro 4 models from 2017 it is part of the standard equipment. The brake of the first series greedily eats brake pads, but decelerates well. The radial brake caliper installed from 2014 bites even harder and is unparalleled among the 125 cc.
