Yamaha YZF-R1 and R1M (2020 model year)
Premiere at the IDM at the Hockenheimring
The new Yamaha YZF-R1 for the 2020 model year rolls out to dealers in September – with a redesigned fairing, a further developed engine and an optimized chassis. The YZF-R1M can now be pre-ordered.
Premiere at the Hockenheimring: Tea Yamaha YZF-R1 for the 2020 model year will be presented from September 27th to 29th at the IDM at the Hockenheimring. The new R1 can be seen on all three days in the Yamaha bLU cRU Village in the paddock.
Optical innovations: The new Yamaha YZF-R1 2020 looks even more closely to the MotoGP bike. This is underlined by the newly designed LED headlights, revised LED position lights, the aggressive front fairing, the windshield and the side fairing parts and the lower tank fairing, which seem to merge seamlessly with the tank. The aerodynamic efficiency has been improved by five percent, so Yamaha, which should affect the possible top speed. For this, Yamaha stated 285 km / h for the last R1 (model year 2019), but MOTORRAD always measured around 299 km / h in all tests. It is not yet known how high the maximum speed of the Yamaha R1 2020 should be, we assume around 300 km / h.

Performance at high speed
Yamaha R1 2020 Euro 5 compliant
However, Yamaha is openly communicating that the new Yamaha YZF-R1 will remain at 200 hp for the 2020 model year, which remains unchanged at 13,500 rpm. In addition, the crossplane four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 998 cc of the 2020 Yamaha R1 is already rolling on Euro 5 compliant. Newly developed rocker arms and cam profiles are designed to ensure optimized valve lift and more stable opening and closing of the valves at high speeds.
The intake tract was also modified: a redesigned cylinder head, differently positioned injection nozzle assembly, throttle valves closer to the combustion chambers, new position for the Bosch injection valves (now above the throttle valve housing, previously below) and injection nozzles with a wider spray angle are intended to optimize engine performance and combustion efficiency. The exhaust system with four catalytic converters has also been redesigned.
The crankshaft of the crossplane engine is said to benefit from oil bores with a larger diameter and crankshaft plain bearings with a larger diameter.

Euro 5-compliant engine, new fairing, cornering ABS with two modes and an engine brake that can be adjusted in three stages – the new Yamaha YZF-R1 rolls out model-refined for 2020.
Cable throttle feeling despite electronic throttle control
The APSG system is a throttle grip position sensor. Thanks to this system, which, in addition to a sensor, is also equipped with a magnet, a spring, a slider and a gear, the driver should feel as if he were turning a conventional cable throttle despite the electronic throttle valve control. This should lead to better control when accelerating.
New R1 (2020) with adjustable engine brake
This new electronic helper offers the driver of the new Yamaha R1 2020 three levels of engine braking to choose from – high, medium and low. Depending on your preference, the control unit then adjusts the engine’s braking torque by regulating the throttle valve opening, the ignition point and the injection volume.

New cornering ABS with variable mode (BC)
The cornering ABS of the new Yamaha R1 comes with two setting options: the BC1 mode ensures a fixed, unchanged ABS sensitivity, the BC2 mode is variable. That means, depending on the lean angle, grip and speed, the ABS is more sensitive, less sensitive, earlier or later in the second stage.
New brake pads and standard tires
The new Yamaha YZF-R1 2020 remains in front of the 320 mm brake discs with monoblock calipers, whereby the new brake pads are intended to ensure optimized deceleration. The "coating" around the wheels will also be new in 2020: it has now fitted the latest Bridgestone Battlax RS11 from the factory.
YZF-R1 (2020) with modified chassis
For the latest generation of the Yamaha YZF-R1, the 43 mm Kayaba fork with 120 mm spring travel has been adapted: The new damping valves are arranged in laminate form, which, together with the slightly reduced fork spring rate and the changed fork oil level, should provide more precise feedback. The steering damper and the setting of the shock absorber have also been adjusted.
Colors, price, availability
The new Yamaha YZF-R1 (2020 model year) will be available at dealerships from September 2019. Available colors are “Yamaha Blue DPBMC” and “Tech Black SMX / MBL2”. Yamaha has not yet commented on the price, the 2019 R1 is 18,995 euros.

Euro 5-compliant engine, new fairing, cornering ABS with two modes and an engine brake that can be adjusted in three stages – the new Yamaha YZF-R1 rolls out model-refined for 2020.
For the 2019 R1M it is 23,995 euros, the price for the new Yamaha YZF-R1M (2020) was communicated at 25,999 euros plus additional costs. The listed model upgrade measures naturally apply not only to the 2020 Yamaha R1, but also to the R1M, which serves as the basis for the WSBK racing motorcycles and is expressly aimed at "ambitious sports drivers", says Yamaha.
With carbon fiber fairing and rear fairing, the latest generation of the electronic Ohlins Racing frame (Electronic Racing Suspension, ERS), which includes the ERS NPX gas pressure telescopic fork and the electronic shock absorber, the front wheel cover in M1 style and the stamped production number the R1M puts the icing on the cake.
New apps as a virtual pit crew
YRC Setting-App and Y-TRAC App are the names of the two developments for smartphones. With the YRC setting app, the total of seven electronic control systems of the R1M can be set to the personal needs of the driver. Some assistance systems can also be switched off completely. The settings should be quick and easy via the app.
The Y-TRAC app is responsible for telemetry recordings and analysis. This enables the driver to download all vehicle data to a mobile device. Log files can be displayed in real time on a Google Maps image of a racetrack, data can be analyzed and compared – from engine speed and angle of inclination to G-forces. You can also see when the respective electronic assistance system intervened.
The YZF-R1M can again only be ordered online. The corresponding portal will be activated from July 25, 2019. The R1M edition is limited, whoever orders first is served first.
