Yamaha YZF-R6 Race Ready (2017)
From the box to the slopes
Yamaha has derived a Production Racer from the YZF-R6 and offers it as a ready-to-use racing motorcycle.
The idea behind the Yamaha YZF-R6 Race Ready is pretty straight forward: Because the high-performance 600cc super sports car can only play out its full potential on the racetrack, Yamaha offers it in a Production Racer version – without concessions to approval regulations, but with high- quality components for the racing use.
At EICMA, this motorcycle was shown as a foretaste of the 2017 Supersport World Championship, where Yamaha will compete with an official and a satellite team; Lucas Mahias and Federico Caricasulo or Niki Tuuli and Sheridan Morais are the names of the drivers. According to the Supersport World Championship regulations, very few components may be changed compared to the series base, namely the cylinder head, gearbox, suspension, electronics and brake discs.
Yamaha has provided three world supersport champions in the recent past; Cal Crutchlow 2009, Chaz Davies 2011 and Sam Lowes 2013 each took the title. In 2017, a driver of the brand with the three tuning forks should be back at the top of the table at the end of the season.
The Yamaha YZF-R6 Race Ready in detail
The styling of the Yamaha YZF-R6 Race Ready largely corresponds to its big sister R1, which in turn is strongly based on the MotoGP equipment; the central air inlet is one of its distinctive features.
The fairing and windshield of the Yamaha YZF-R6 Race Ready have been redesigned to optimize aerodynamics, and Yamaha cites an 8 percent increase in aerodynamic efficiency as a measurable result. The rear frame is made of magnesium and is 20 mm narrower at its front end than on the basic R6, which should allow the driver better contact with the vehicle – pillion riding is not intended on race tracks anyway. The seat and frame have also been reshaped to make it easier for the rider to shift weight.
The on-board electronics of the Yamaha YZF-R6 Race Ready include an electronically controlled throttle valve (YCC-T = Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle), electronically variably positioned inlet funnel (YCC-I = Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake), an adjustable traction control (TCS = Traction Control System) as well as a quickshifter for even faster gear changes without disengaging and engaging.
The vehicle on display is also enhanced by an Akrapovič Evo full titanium exhaust, Brembo brake calipers at the front and rear, an Ohlins cartridge kit fork and Pirelli Diablo tires that comply with the regulations. All of these components are also available individually from the Yamaha dealer network.
