Yamaha MT-09 (model year 2017)

First impressions from Mallorca

Yamaha has introduced the new Yamaha MT-09 to a handful of journalists. After the official presentation, the first test drive was made on the slopes. How is the new MT-09 doing on the rainy streets of Mallorca?

Let us first come to the innovations in the Yamaha MT-09 model year 2017. Visually, it looks much more aggressive than its predecessor. The front is reminiscent of a mixture of the previous model and the MT-10. The silhouette has also been adapted and is now based on the large sister model MT-10. Among other things, the tank cover has been revised, which is now larger. A lot has also happened at the rear, which has made the naked bike even more dynamic.

The engine of the new Yamaha MT-09 still delivers 115 hp at 10,000 rpm. The maximum torque is 88 Nm at 8500 rpm. In addition, Yamaha has given the MT-09 a three-stage traction control and an anti-hopping clutch. The 2017 variant weighs 193 kilograms.

Delivery will start soon

Yamaha also made some changes to the seat. The seat height is now 820 mm. The pillion passenger also has more space, as the rear part of the seat is now a little longer. Yamaha also presented some accessories for the Yamaha MT-09 at the presentation in Mallorca. Initially, almost 50 official accessories are offered with which the naked bike can be customized. For example, the new MT-09 can be equipped to make it even sportier. If you want to use your MT-09 for longer tours, you will also receive suitable accessories, which has a positive effect on the travel suitability of the naked bike.

The new Yamaha MT-09 will be available in the three colors Night Fluo, Race Blu and Tech Black. Deliveries should start in December or January 2017 at the latest. Unfortunately, the new MT-09 has become a bit more expensive. It now costs 8,995 euros, which is 600 euros more expensive than the 2016 version.

How does the new Yamaha MT-09?

The 2017 model year Yamaha MT-09 looks more grown-up. The chassis is much tighter. The engine remains fun and there is nothing wrong with the handling. Despite the wet road surface, the MT-09 was on the road on the mountain roads of Mallorca with good grip.

Another nice feature is the new quickshifter, which makes the switching process easier. Yamaha has improved the new MT-09 in all the right places and turned an already good motorcycle into an even better one. Anyone who would like to know more about the handling of the new MT-09 will have the opportunity to do so in the upcoming issues of MOTORRAD and PS. The detailed driving report will be published in MOTORRAD 1/2017 and PS 2/2017.
