Yamaha 2021 scooters: new Xmax 125, Xmax 300 Euro5 and Tmax Tech Max
The Xmax 125 is redesigned for 2021 – and to keep the head of motorcycle sales in France? -, while the Xmax 300 respects the Euro5 standard to continue its fight against the Forza 300/350. These two Yamaha sports scooters benefit from Tech Max versions, like the Tmax 560 which is content with a new color.
From its release in 2006 and until 2014, the Xmax 125 was the undisputed champion in sales of 125 scooters in France and often even the No. 1 in sales of motorcycles (excluding 50 cc mopeds). Then the Forza 125 arrived, allowing Honda to win three years in a row, from 2015 to 2017..
Since then, the two favorite scooters of French "scootomobilists" have bitterly competed for first place in the ranking according to their respective evolutions: crowned in 2018 but dethroned in 2019, Yamaha’s sport-GT scooter could well recover "its" crown in 2020 (5460 immates Vs 5243 at the end of November!).

For 2021 and to keep its title of "king of the 125", the Xmax is equipped with a new engine that respects the Euro5 standard, which is both more fuel-efficient and efficient. His secret? Variable valve timing (VVA) appeared two years ago on the sporty YZF-R125 and is available on more and more Yamaha models..
Available from March 2021, this fifth generation of Xmax does not yet deliver the maximum power and torque of its 124 cc "Blue Core" single cylinder. On the other hand, its minimum values ββare already announced … because they are of primary interest to users, now ?
According to the clever calculations of the Iwata engine manufacturers, the 2021 Xmax 125 would consume 11% less fuel than its predecessor, or 2.4 l / 100 km (and 56 g / km of CO2). The average consumption would be reduced by one deciliter when the "Stop & Start" system is activated, or 2.3 l / 100 km (and 54 g / km).
Xmax 125: new engine and chassis, same look and success ?
If the Yamaha designers weren’t asked for this update – too bad for them, so much the better for the customers who appreciate this look! -, the engineers reworked the chassis "for more handling and stability", promises the Japanese manufacturer, without entering – unnecessarily? – in details.
"The 2021 model has a longer wheelbase (1570 mm), as well as increased ground clearance (140 mm)", simply indicates Yamaha. As a reminder, the 2018 Xmax was shorter (1,526 mm between each wheel) and less high (130 mm). Already qualified as "high and hard" by MNC, the saddle was then at 795 mm from the ground, against 800 on the new.
“In addition, the full weight of the Xmax 125 has also been reduced by 9 kg to 166 kg, offering more maneuverability and ease of parking,” adds Yamaha to the attention of small riders or beginners. Finally, "the rear suspension stroke has been increased by 15 mm to reach 90 mm" and correspondingly improve comfort. ?
The new Xmax 125 will come out of the MBK factory in St-Quentin in the Aisne (cocorico!) In two colors: very dark "Sonic" gray with black rims and a new lighter "Icon" gray with blue rims and inscriptions . The price is not yet revealed … but will have to stay close to that of its great rival: the Forza 125 is currently displayed at 5,249 euros.
Xmax 300: now alone against Forza 300 350 !
In the higher category (250-400 cc, inaccessible to motorists therefore), the Forza 300 dominates! Between January 1 and November 30, 2020, the Honda scooter garnered 1,484 registrations, against 1,144 for the Xmax 300 … and 292 for the Xmax 400 that Yamaha is not renewing in 2021.
From February 2021, the Xmax 300 will benefit from the services of a new 292 cc "Blue Core" single cylinder, compliant with the Euro5 standard and more efficient by 6% in terms of fuel, i.e. 3 l / 100km (Vs 3, 33 l / 100km for the Forza 350 …). The Yamaha will develop 27.6 hp and 29 newton-meters, against 29.2 hp and 31.5 Nm for the future Honda.
"The Xmax 300 combines the performance of a maxi scooter with exceptional agility and lightness," says Yamaha. Weighing 38 kg less than the Tmax 560 (and 4 kg less than the Forza 350), it would be "the ideal choice for daily trips, but also for sporting outings that break the routine".
Unchanged, the Xmax 300 offers the same colors as the 125: very dark "Sonic" gray with black rims and a new lighter "Icon" gray with blue rims and inscriptions. The Xmax 300 – like the 125 – has two additional "high-end" colors, via a Tech Max finish promoted by the Tmax 560…
Tech Max finish (s) on the Tmax 560, Xmax 300 and 125
Respecting the new anti-pollution and noise-reduction standard (Euro5) since its renewal at the very end of 2019, the Tmax 560 will not change for 2021. The king of maxiscooters is content with a new color in its Tech Max version: Gray "Power" replaces Black.
"As its 20th anniversary approaches, this flagship model continues to show the way" and to be sold by full containers: since the start of the year, the Tmax 560 has sold 4,816 units! By way of comparison, Honda sold "only" 1251 X-Adv 750. Be careful though: the Forza 750 comes to the rescue !
As a reminder, the Tmax 560 "Tech Max" differs from the base model via its electric screen, its speed regulator, its heated handles and saddle, not to mention its specific colors. For the new year, the 2021 brothers also have a "Tech Max" finish, but cosmetic only…
In addition to the Tech Max emblem, the Xmax receive the following items: special saddle with particular padding and matching colored stitching, anodized footboard plates, fork sleeves painted in "Frost" silver, Gilles Tooling grips and specific colors … in order to better compete with Forza 350 (Gray, Blue, White or Black) and Forza 125 (Gray, White, Black, Silver or Red).
