Yamaha passes the three with the MT-09 roadster

Yamaha will not have left its fans simmering for too long: ten days of having sharpened our curiosity in one, the first – and probably the main – novelty of the Japanese manufacturer in 2014 is fully revealed. And what a novelty: with a new 3-cylinder 847 cc, the MT-09 makes a sensational entry into the category of punchy roadsters !
847 cc, 106.2 hp and 188 kg all full facts: yum !
As suspected by MNC, the first motorcycle to benefit from the new three-cylinder is a roadster: the MT-09. It is definitely not a Supersport or a Superbike as the manufacturer might suggest by referring to "the world of sports bikes" in its teasing video (read).
But our little finger suggests that Iwata’s crest has plans in this direction with its 847 cc "3-legged" whose dimensions are 78mm bore and 59.1mm stroke: Yamaha does has certainly not developed a single-use engine! On the contrary, everything suggests that this engine, appreciated for its character and its versatility, will equip other versions in the more or less near future (sports, trail, supermotard …).
And all these potential novelties will have one essential point in common: their purpose is not necessarily pure performance, but the delivery of sensations at usual speeds and speeds. After decades spent teasing the red zone on 4-cylinders often too "sharp" for road use, "Yamahists" are offered to taste the flavors of a much more accessible in-line 3-cylinder. Or rather to "re-taste", since Yamaha already built "3-legs" in the mid-70s with the XS750, which later became XS850.
Almost 40 years later (!), The MT-09 is reinvesting a niche left fallow by the Japanese manufacturers … but conscientiously plowed by some of their European rivals like Benelli, MV Agusta and especially Triumph, of which a large part of the return in the foreground of the world motorcycling scene is due to the approval of its "Tripeuls" which joyfully propel the !
Motorcycles that the brand with three tuning forks attacks head-on with this new roadster which positions itself deliberately between the two English cylinders: with its 847cc, the MT-09 looks down on the "little" Triumph 675cc and does not lower its eyes (too) in front of the "big" 1050cc English.
Advertised for 106.2 hp and 83 Nm of torque, the Yamaha block develops the same power as a Street Triple (69 Nm), but 14 Nm of torque more! Compared to a Speed Triple, the MT-09 is less to its advantage since it gives it 29 hp and 28 Nm (135 hp and 111 Nm) … in the free world: in France, the sporty large-capacity roadster English is indeed restricted to 106 hp and 100 Nm.
In the same way, the 3-cylinder Yamaha takes the ascendancy by a short head over the star of the roadsters of "medium-almost-large" displacement: the, whose in-line 4-cylinder of 806 cc produces 113 hp and 83 Nm in full, but 106 hp and 80.5 Nm in France.
At the technical level, the 3-cylinder of the MT-09 hides another trump card up its sleeve: as the GM of Yamaha Motor France explained to the readers of Site in Cologne, this engine uses an asynchronous crankshaft timing with an order of ‘ignition at 0 °, 240 ° and 480 °. Released on the YZR-M1 from then in 2009, this "Cross-Plane" design gives pride of place to torque and gives the engine additional consistency and responsiveness..
The other side of the coin: on the 4-cylinder of the R1, the Cross-Plane tends to smooth the torque curve to the detriment of the sensations at (very) high speeds. The engine architecture being different on the MT-09, the result will perhaps be quite different, even if Yamaha already specifies that the Cross Plane guarantees "the linearity of the torque available".
A pirate’s heart !
Advertised for 60 kg (10 less than the 4-cylinder of the), the "heart" of the Yamaha is equipped with a balancing arm and a relatively high primary transmission reduction of 1.708 (1.512 on the , for example). Its twelve-hole injectors are installed on the four-valve cylinder heads, which makes it possible to "spray" the guide of the intake valves directly and to use smaller injection bodies..
Another significant advantage of this placement: higher precision, guaranteeing controlled consumption. Despite its small 14-liter tank, the MT-09 would thus be able to travel up to 240 km "depending on the conditions of use", specifies Yamaha cautiously..
With regard to the thinness of the passenger seat, sure that a possible guest will cry for mercy well before exhausting this respectable autonomy for a roadster !
All in a sound that we hope is devilish, as the Yamaha engine can – must! – snore beautifully: already that a three-legged emits naturally rocky vocalizations, those of the Yam ‘engine must be particularly pronounced between its "cross-plane" setting, its intake vents of different lengths and its short side exhaust inspired by the noisy R6 !
Modern, this engine also incorporates the electronic Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) accelerator that is found on the sports R6 and R1, but also on the. As on these three motorcycles, several injection maps are available to the rider: "Standard", "Mode A" (maximum acceleration, response to instantaneous acceleration) and "Mode B" (more progressive response).
A chassis and design inspired by the MT-01
Side cycle, the MT-09 is built around an aluminum frame composed of two parts screwed to the level of the steering column and the swingarm. A technology used in the recent past on the late MT-01, from which this novelty is also inspired in terms of philosophy and some aesthetic characteristics such as optics (read).
Connected to a steel rear buckle, this original and compact chassis can contain the weight: Yamaha announces a full weight of 188 kg, or 6 kg additional compared to the. But this places the new Yamaha at 23 kg of the weight of its (heavy) "cousin" and downright 41 kg (!) Of the .
Wanted nonconformist to the end of the tires, the MT-09 adopts a shock absorber placed in a horizontal position, while its imposing flat handlebars 400 mm wide presage a typical position. Its 41 mm inverted fork is adjustable for rebound only, while its "Monocross" shock absorber adjusts for preload and rebound..
Braking is entrusted to two 298 mm discs clamped by four-piston calipers with radial mounting at the front and a single 245 mm disc at the rear. Clearly, the MT-09 is positioned as more advanced than the FZ8, both in terms of technology and the quality of the peripherals..
In addition to the "radio" calipers, we note the presence of a gear indicator engaged on the digital instrumentation, pretty hexagonal mirrors, forged aluminum footrests and pedals and an asymmetric swingarm made of the same material. . A "premium" hardware, which will certainly be felt on the price…
Yamaha has not yet communicated a price for this novelty expected in September 2013 (November for the ABS version), but we can already expect a more salty bill than for the FZ8 currently displayed at 8399 € without ABS in the Yamaha network.
However, let us hope that Iwata’s coat of arms contains this predictable inflation: on the other side of the Channel, the leaders of Triumph manage to keep the price of the Street Triple below the € 8,000 mark (€ 7,990 without ABS)..
