As announced last week (read), Yamaha unveiled this morning at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan a new MT for 2014: the MT-07 roadster.
With its new 689 cc inline-twin developing 74.8 hp and 68 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm, the MT-07 is "a sports bike truly destined to inspire many riders across Europe by giving fun, passion and enthusiasm at an affordable price level ", promises Yamaha which announces a dry weight of 164 kg and 179 kg all full (182 kg with ABS).
"By designing the basic architecture of the new engine (inline twin, 4-stroke, double overhead camshaft, liquid cooling and 270 ° crankshaft as on the TDM900 and XT1200Z), the objective of our engineers was to to manufacture a responsive and attractive engine to multiply the emotions felt by the pilot in various situations ", continues the brand in tuning forks:" rather than focusing our efforts on obtaining maximum power and the highest torque values , we chose to create an engine that gives emotions, while being very easy and intuitive to control ".
Japanese engineers were inspired by the "cross plane" philosophy dear to Yamaha, which allows a more predictable and instantaneous response from the engine: "when the combustion torque (created by the ignition of the fuel) and the inertia torque ( created by the rotation of the crankshaft and the up and down movement of the pistons) are properly aligned (this is called "clean torque"), the pilot perceives a clearer sensation of release of power and can consequently control the power and rear wheel traction in a more precise and intuitive way, ”explains the manufacturer.
To decrease the overall weight of the MT-07, every component has been carefully evaluated. The compact single-axis balance, for example, is "one of the lightest in its class on the market," says Yamaha, which has reduced the distance between the crankshaft and the balance shaft to have a compact engine..
As on the, the staggered design of the cylinders allows for lower fuel consumption by reducing the friction losses in the engine: "compared to a conventional design where the connecting rod is tilted when combustion occurs, the offset of the cylinders reduces the friction losses between piston and cylinder and transmits power more efficiently ".
A new injection system, with a compact fuel pump design, should also help keep fuel consumption low, as are the lightweight forged pistons and lens-shaped combustion chambers..
Inspired by the MT-09, the one-piece exhaust system of the MT-07 features a short and massive muffler, fed by staggered and curved manifolds that merge with the muffler raised under the engine.
Finally Yamaha, which openly seeks to seduce "riders of in-line 4-cylinder motorcycles of average capacity", plans "soon" a 35 kW version for holders of the new A2 license..
