BMW S 1000 RR recall

Possible leak on the oil cooler

The motorcycle manufacturer BMW has problems again with the new S 1000 RR. Oil may leak out at the oil cooler connections.

W.As BMW reported on request from MOTORRAD, it was found during ongoing field observations that small cracks can form in the area of the press connection on the oil cooler hose over running time and that oil can escape there. The recall has been listed with the status “under investigation” at the KBA since October 17, 2019. The recall concerns vehicles built in 2018 and 2019 up to the construction date October. As a description of the defect, the KBA cites “Crack formation in the supply / return line of the oil cooler due to escaping oil that gets into the traffic area”. KBA and BMW name 2,869 vehicles for the world market and 470 machines for the German market.

The recall starts in October

According to BMW, affected vehicles will be converted before delivery to customers. Vehicles that are already in customer hands also receive new components. BMW will inform all affected customers in writing. BMW estimates the duration of the workshop visit to be around 30 minutes. The conversion campaign is scheduled to start in October 2019.

The American traffic safety authority NHTSA had previously published the recall. The NHTSA named improperly installed connection lines to the oil cooler as the reason for the recall. Under certain circumstances, oil can leak here. If this gets onto the rear tire, a fall cannot be ruled out. In the US, 416 machines are affected by the recall.
