A swallow doesn‘t make a summer, a new outfit doesn’t make a veteran a youth. At most the autumn of life can be prolonged.

India summer

A.At the Enfi eld India exhibition stand, one or two Intermot visitors may have rubbed their eyes in amazement last year. Were the exhibits new or just face lifted? From a distance everything seemed to have stayed the same, typical features such as the teardrop-shaped tank, the frame, the exhaust system and the disguised lamp had obviously not changed. The painted, widely drawn fenders and the spring-loaded single seat looked even more antiquated than the previous models. It was only on closer inspection that significant innovations caught the eye: the disc brake at the front, a smoother engine without external oil lines, now designed as a block engine, the lambda probe that indicated the injection system, and struts with expansion tanks were indications of the modern era.

Confusion? No problem, a look at the technical data will help: the motor and gearbox are new and share one housing. A fifth has joined the four previous courses. The identical data for stroke and bore indicate identical parts or the use of the old production systems. As before, the camshaft below actuates the valves via long bumpers and rocker arms. The power output of 28 HP at a tranquil 5300 rpm is not exorbitantly higher than the 22 HP of the old model, especially since there are still 24 left on the test bench. But at least the new Bullet has overcome the European homologation hurdle, the Euro 3 standard.

A lambda probe helps to comply with current pollutant limit values.

Optics or technical data, let’s let the new thing affect us when driving. Little has changed in the seating position. As upright as the Lord at five-o’-clock tea, knees bent at right angles, the driver sits relaxed on the Enfield. The Langhuber develops its performance just as relaxed and contemplative. Already at 2000 rpm there is almost the maximum torque of 41 Nm and holds up well up to 4000 rpm. Turning higher than what feels like 4000, – a tachometer is still missing – does not help much, as the vibrations then increase unpleasantly. Shifting up, recently with the left and even smooth, makes more sense. Listening to the sonorous beat and drifting in fifth gear at 100 km / h has something very calming, meditative. Higher speed, even up to a top speed of 130 km / h, shatters the driver’s physique and psyche unnecessarily.

The chassis, now on 18-inch wheels and Avon tires, also appreciates the leisurely pace. Strong self-steering behavior spoils the clean line in an inclined position. From a certain incline, the bullet wants to tip inwards and has to be kept in line with corrections. In right-hand bends, the side stand also gives an early warning to moderate. Even the new disc brake can cleverly conceal the breakthrough in modern technology. High hand strength produces only moderate delay.

Classic meets modern: The appearance goes back to the Enfield Bullet from 1954. Modern attributes: disc brake and injection.

Calmness in all situations should be the bullet driver’s maxim. It remains to be seen whether this will continue at the proud price of 5640 euros, especially since both the equipment and the workmanship do not even come close to meeting Central European requirements. It doesn’t help that the Bullet can be ordered at no extra charge in classic black, ocean green and royal red.

The overall impression is ambivalent. Even with disc brakes and fuel injection, the Enfield Bullet remains a child of the 50s both visually and functionally. In terms of technology, it cannot match the modern age despite modern components. Difficult to say whether it will be a big seller in India; at least in our part of the world, it is more likely an Indian summer.
