If you don’t have the Alps on your doorstep and still don’t feel like sitting your buttocks flat on the autobahn, you can load your motorcycle. Here is an overview of the motorcycle transport options.

People with a generous time budget simply drive in two or three days from Hamburg through Germany to the Alps or take a relaxing week to southern Spain. Everyone else is looking for ways to somehow overcome the distance. One variant is the motorail train, which is the ultimate comfort kick, for example overnight from Hamburg to Vienna. The bike is well lashed to the back of the open car, the crew is in the front of the compartment. You are very far away in no time and the tires are still like new. Traveling by train has various advantages: It runs according to the timetable, the one-way route can also be booked, and there is no need to park a van or car with trailer safely at the destination. The disadvantages: You have to adapt your personal program to the departure times, and if you book too late, you may end up with nothing. Deutsche Bahn no longer operates a car train because it was “not profitable”. Fortunately, private companies are now offering car train connections, but only to a few destinations at the moment. Another possibility: You entrust your motorcycle to one of the various motorcycle transporters who travel to numerous destinations in Europe, sometimes even on regular routes. Third variant: drive yourself with a trailer or transporter.

Motorcycle transport by train
The Austrian Federal Railways OBB always had one or two destinations on offer as an insider tip. Two private providers have taken over the special wagons from Deutsche Bahn and are now offering some of the earlier destinations. Unfortunately in France the motorail trains only run from Paris. The connection from Strasbourg to Narbonne, which is so practical at least for southern Germans, does not currently exist.

Motorcycle transportation by truck or bus
As an alternative to the motorail train, there are numerous companies that bring their own motorcycle to the desired destination. There are various variants: the motorcycle is delivered to an address, which can be a private address or a hotel, or to a warehouse, for example at an airport, where you can pick up your motorcycle in the destination area. With some offers, the crew can also travel in the same transport.

Some companies drive to popular destinations across Europe, others mainly transport from house to house in Germany. In many cases, individual travelers with a motorcycle have to wait for remaining spaces that remain on the trailer when transporting entire groups in the bus with the bikes. There are also full packages, which include motorcycle transport to a hotel, flight, transfer and one or more nights in this hotel.
You should be careful and read the respective provisions carefully when it comes to insurance. In some cases, only a transport insurance over ten euros per kilogram of vehicle weight is offered as standard. For a bike weighing 250 kilograms, there is only 2,500 euros in the event of a claim, regardless of the actual value. Additional insurance is recommended here, which takes the value of the machine into account. We have sorted the providers according to the regions where the respective company is based. Organize motorcycle transport yourself
Anyone who has a trailer coupling on their car can borrow a motorcycle trailer. You should pay attention to the permitted trailer load of the towing vehicle and the payload of the trailer.

Ideally, the trailer is as wide as the car and has a drawbar that is not too short. Then it can be clearly seen in the mirror and it follows the towing vehicle in a stable manner. A solid, continuous floor is great, so the trailer is more comfortable to walk on and the motorcycles are easier to lash down. One disadvantage of the trailer is the limited top speed. In addition, the question arises as to where the team can be parked in the target area. Ideally, you should choose a hotel where you can stay overnight at the beginning and end of the tour and where the car and trailer are allowed to stay in the parking lot during the tour.
Rent a van and drive it yourself can also be a sensible option: At the web address www.billiger-mietwagen.de/faq/transporter-motorrad.html there is advice on self-rented vans, including brokerage of offers. If you want to rent a van yourself from a car rental company, it is essential to ensure that the vehicle has lashing eyes in the hold before booking. This should go without saying, but it is not in all cases. You usually have to take care of the required access ramp yourself. The great advantage of this solution is unmatched flexibility, the disadvantage just as clear: You need a secure parking space when you are not driving the car, and of course you have to pay for it during the entire time. Here is a price example for an eight-day trip to Italy for three people with three motorbikes, traveling from Dusseldorf to Verona and back, almost 2,000 kilometers.

At Europcar, the rental price is 424 euros for a Mercedes Sprinter including 800 kilometers plus 348 euros for the additional kilometers plus around 220 euros for the diesel, a total of almost 1,000 euros without toll costs. The same period in May costs 257.90 euros at Sixt, also 800 kilometers free, additional kilometers cost 253 euros in the package, so the car comes to 731 euros. The regional rental company Ulmen offers an Opel Movano for 399 euros a week, 1,000 additional kilometers cost 220 euros, plus 220 euros for diesel makes about 840 euros. You should also plan around 300 euros per person and bike here. A special feature of the Movano at Ulmen: It has a trailer coupling, which is not a matter of course with rental vans.
