Ducati Monster 1200 S turns out to be a wonderfully balanced and also light sports naked.

Ducati Monster 1200 S with an enormously stiffer chassis

It owes this to its completely new design, which is reminiscent of the Panigale. The tubular space frame only extends as far as the two cylinders to which it is bolted, making the engine an important part of the chassis. The rear frame is docked to the engine block and upright cylinder, from where the shock absorber is supported directly on the swing arm. The enormously stiffer chassis ensures the fine driving characteristics of the Ducati Monster 1200 S. And that, although the weight distribution turned out to be more tail-heavy and the wheelbase increased by 60 millimeters compared to the predecessor.

The S version of the Ducati Monster 1200 traditionally springs with Ohlins, now with a massive 48 millimeter fork and monoshock at the rear. All attention: the vote was also successful. Although the whole thing does not speak heavenly, it does respond accurately and with its sporty toughness it is suitable for fine heating routes without bothering the pilot too much on the wrinkled surface.

And then the engine. The characteristic is 100 percent Ducati – the Testastretta lives, spits and trembles. At the end of the next bend, this power twin rushes to the next task with full torque – boooooaab, the sound is unique, it crackles in push mode too. In sport mode, in which the S version brings 145 horses to the start, the speed should not be below 5000 rpm. This is the area on the color display of the high-tech cockpit display that is colored orange. Below the twin looks a bit listless, but here there is fire under the roof. The throttle response is super direct, which experienced drivers can handle safely. Those who like it gentler can choose “Touring” on the left end of the handlebar and enjoy the same power – just a little smoother. “Urban” cuts the performance of the Ducati Monster 1200 S to 100 hp and prevents excessive jerking at lower speeds.

But we are burning with the Ducati Monster 1200 S on perfect asphalt – so on in terms of sport. The posture of the pilot, who sits slightly inclined forwards in attack position, is sporty. Fortunately, that has nothing to do with monster times when you suffered stretched far over the tank with the entire weight on your wrists. The relatively weakly cranked handlebar sits much closer to the driver and even 40 millimeters higher than on the last big monster, the 1100 Evo. The bench can also be adjusted in height for the first time. With the accessory bench, the seat height ranges from 745 to 810 millimeters. The situation around the pegs is still annoying for drivers with shoe sizes beyond the children’s section. If you want to stand on your balls in a sporty way, your right foot will not be placed properly past the exhaust system.

But that was it with real problem cases. Despite Brembo’s M50 calipers, like those on the Panigale, the brakes were relatively blunt and could not be properly metered. But that may have been due to the softer surfaces or not yet properly braked discs of the pilot series. Depending on the modes, the ABS regulates really late (sport) or quite early. The traction control of the Ducati Monster 1200 S is also matched to the modes, but can be regulated separately in eight stages.

The Ducati Monster 1200 S is the sportiest monster that has ever existed, and yet with the powerful twin with strong character it has remained a typical Ducati. The KTM Super Duke and BMW S 1000 R have significantly more power, perhaps even the sportier overall concept. But with the weaknesses of its predecessors eliminated, the 1200 S or the standard monster will find numerous fans.
