The first travel enduro from Ducati in the driving report

City runabouts, enduro, tourers, athletes: the new Ducati Multistrada 1200 (S) would like to embody four types of motorcycle. A real multifunctional tool. But many of these tools are just a little bit and nothing really good. Also the Italian?

In its original form in 2003, the Multistrada stood out from the crowd with its concept, which, according to Ducati, initially ensured good sales figures. Recently, however, sales plummeted, and it was high time for a new all-purpose weapon. Multistrada 1200 (S) is the name of the completely new design, which only shares the name with its predecessors.

I.The centerpiece is the Testastretta Evoluzione, the drive from the Superbike 1198. In order for the sports unit to develop its performance in the Multistrada in a manner appropriate to the species, the engineers dug deep into their bag of tricks: tamer control times, significantly less valve overlap, less valve lift, reduced compression, newly designed and exhaust ports, differently positioned injectors, new throttle bodies. These modifications lead to a change in the power and torque curve, which cuts the peak values and gives the engine more muscles at lower to medium speeds.

Higher-quality materials for the valve seats, more efficient combustion and improved thermal conditions double the service intervals for valve clearance from 12,000 to 24,000 kilometers. A new oil bath clutch is used in the revised engine, which, thanks to the inclined planes, is intended to reduce manual force and to avoid a punching rear wheel when overrun. Changes to the gearbox and the secondary ratio complete the most important modifications relating to the engine.

Only digital displays provide information in the Multistrada cockpit. The circular element indicates the driving mode.

The Multistrada 1200, which is full of electronics, also offers countless innovations. The first one is used even before the engine is started: Equipped without a conventional ignition lock, the Ducati communicates wirelessly with a small transmitter and only releases the ignition if the code matches. After the somewhat cumbersome start-up procedure, the V2 roars aggressively out of its crisp end pots. From 2000 rpm, the 148 hp 1200er pushes smoothly and offers impressive punch even at low revs. With increasing revs, the Italian burns off an immense firework of performance, which, as expected, subsides a little in the upper speed range.

Like most Ducatis, the Multistrada 1200 accelerates very gently and runs extremely cultivated. With the exception of the switchbox, which is still somewhat hooked, the converted Testastretta does an excellent job and catapults the Duc and its jockey over the charming landscape of the Canarian holiday island of Lanzarote.

The S versions accommodate electro-hydraulically adjustable spring elements.

The Ducati offers four riding modes: Sport, Touring, Urban, Enduro. Depending on the mode, either full power or only around 100 ponies are available. Power delivery also varies, and traction control allows different levels of slip in each mode. In addition to the basic version (14990 euros) there are two S versions "Sports" and "Touring".

Differences to the standard Duc: The 17,990 euro expensive offshoots offer setup changes to their suspension elements at the push of a button. In addition to the electro-hydraulically adjustable chassis (Ohlins), the sport version offers fine carbon parts. The touring version offers a higher level of utility: Instead of decorative accessories, it includes a set of suitcases, a main stand and heated grips. At the presentation only this model was available for test shooting.

Back to the modes. They are preset for a specific application, which works quite well. Nevertheless, the system allows countless individual interventions. It goes without saying that the new Duc also has ABS as standard. However, its functionality is somewhat disappointing. The anti-lock device regulates unusually early, and this property is even more pronounced when driving downhill. The ABS can be switched off, as can the somewhat inconsistent traction control. The seating position, handling and precise cornering behavior inspire. On the Multistrada, however, due to its long suspension travel of 170 millimeters, there is some swell at a sporty pace.

Conclusion: There is no machine that meets the type-specific requirements of four types of motorcycle. The Multistrada 1200 (S) is no exception. Still, it’s a versatile, fascinating bike with a captivating drive. The biggest criticism is the ABS.
