Royal Enfield Himalayan "Sleet" (2018)
Limited special edition presented
With the "Sleet" Royal Enfield presented another version of the Himalayan enduro model in January 2018.
Royal Enfield has made headlines not just since the last EICMA. The Interceptor INT 650 and Continental GT 650 models presented in Milan were largely received positively by the trade press and other motorcycle enthusiasts. But already a year earlier, at EICMA 2016, the Indian manufacturer provided the presentation of the Royal Enfield Himalayan for enthusiasm. With the Himalayan "Sleet" The manufacturer, which is on the advance, brought another version of the Enduro onto the market in January 2018.
Technically, the newly introduced Royal Enfield is based on the Himalayan "Sleet" largely based on the basic model. Royal Enfield equips the "Sleet" with a special paint and a so-called Explorer kit, which consists of two waterproof side cases (including brackets), crash bars for the engine and a handlebar made of aluminum. Initially, the Sleet was intended exclusively for the Indian market; Royal Enfield presented the special model for Europe at INTERMOT. However, prices have not yet been announced.
Royal Enfield Himalayan at EICMA 2016
The Royal Enfield Himalayan celebrated its European premiere at EICMA 2016. The manufacturer sees it as a motorcycle that is made for adventures and tours in the Himalayas. It combines 60 years of experience in the Himalayas with a new design and the also new LS 410 engine. It paves the way for adventure tours on this side of extreme experiences, and is equally ideal for pothole slopes and mountain stretches.
Siddthartha Lal, President of Royal Enfield, put it poetically when presenting the Himalayan: "The Himalayan is the culmination of Royal Enfield’s 60 year history in the spiritual home of these motorcycles – the Himalayas. Our most important finding in all these years has been that the best motorcycle for mountains like the Himalayas is not that which wants to dominate the landscape, but that which is able to harmonize with it. The big adventure tourers who currently dominate this segment do not behave optimally in these areas because they are too heavy, extremely complicated, intimidating and not really made for this environment. Designed from the ground up, the Himalayan is a simple motorcycle capable of going anywhere that will redefine adventure touring around the world.
We are extremely excited to bring the Himalayan, which was presented in India in spring 2016, to the European market. What’s particularly exciting is that it allows both year-round riders and enthusiasts to do more with their motorcycles. Their unobtrusive nature serves the purposes of year-round drivers and at the same time gives many people the opportunity to conquer less traveled and more demanding roads and paths. In the established culture of recreational driving in Europe, the Himalayan is the perfect motorcycle that is suitable for longer distances on rough surfaces and at the same time for fast maneuvers in city traffic. In terms of functionality, the Himalayan is an extremely versatile motorcycle with its unobtrusive, spartan design, its flat torque curve and its long travel and affordability, which is the best choice for long distances as well as for the urban jungle."
Back from the spiritual world of thought to the bottom of technology, the Royal Enfield Himalayan shows a robust double loop frame. Suspension travel of 220 mm at the front and 180 mm at the rear enables a ground clearance of 220 millimeters; the 21-inch front wheel should ensure the best controllability on rocky and furrowed surfaces.
The Royal Enfield Himalayan is powered by the long-stroke LS 410 engine, the first member of a new engine family with an overhead camshaft. Its maximum torque is between 4,000 and 4,500 rpm and is 32 Nm; tea nominal output of 18 kW (25 hp) follows at 6,500 rpm. Based on these key data, the manufacturer promises smooth driving at low speed in high gears, easy handling of inclines and easy maneuverability in city traffic.
The Royal Enfield Himalayan can carry 15 liters of fuel in its tank. According to the manufacturer, luggage mounting points for hard cases, bags and canisters were included in the design process from the start. A simple combination of instruments provides information on speed, direction, ambient temperature, travel time, service intervals and distances covered. An ergonomic ratio of footrests, handlebars and seat height (800 mm) should result in a comfortable, upright driver position suitable for long journeys.
One 300 and one 240 mm brake disc, supported by a two-channel ABS, take care of the deceleration of the 185 kilogram Royal Enfield Himalayan, which is ready to drive.
The Royal Enfield Himalayan is in the colors "Granites" (Dark gray metallic) and "Snow" (White).
