Twin-twin situation

Content of

Triumph presents its two new models with the two-cylinder, which has grown to almost 1200 cc, the Thruxton (R version) and the Bonneville T120. The exit to collect the first driving impressions – a clear twin-twin situation.

Well-sounding names and a history going back decades – both are an obligation. Triumph dares and manages the balancing act between maintaining the classic look, or at least following it, and integrating modern technology into the engine and chassis. Can the new ones convey anything of the feeling of the old originals? Our sister magazine MOTORRAD already had the opportunity to drive the new models and colleague Andreas Bildl told us how it was. Despite all the differences between the sporty Thruxton, which is known to be named after an English race track, and the more touristy one Bonneville What unites the two is the newly developed engine. At least the basis is the same: a water-cooled, short-stroke twin with 1197 cm³ provides the necessary propulsion. For the Thruxton, which appears in the Cafe Racer look, the British have given the Twin more top performance and more liveliness by means of a higher compression of 11: 1 (instead of 10: 1), sharper camshafts and a lower centrifugal mass on the crankshaft. Strong 97 hp, 17 more than the Bonnie, promise jagged performance on paper, the 270-degree crank pin offset guarantees robust sound and engine running.

Triumph Thruxton R.

Fine workmanship and fine details let the eye wander over the bike. Megaphone bags with brushed stainless steel sleeves, engine lids in the pre-unit look, also brushed, as well as the aluminum tank lid – style was important. Above all, the Thruxton R, ready for the first ride, also shines with even higher quality components such as Brembo radial brakes, Showa upside-down fork and Ohlins shock absorbers.

With a radical geometry, i.e. a steep fork and short caster, as well as moderately wide 17-inch tires (160s at the rear), the Thruxton offers playful handling, as our colleague quickly noted. The coordination of the spring elements is successful: sensitive enough in response, but also tight enough to never become spongy and ideally suited for tough cornering. From 2000 rpm you can boldly pull up the gas, already from 3000 rpm you can feel pressure and revving, which quickly and willingly lets the engine snap to the limiter. The twin, which has two balancer shafts, is alien to rough pounding, but it has by no means become a boring turbine. Of course, the new one comes with the usual electronics (ABS, traction control that can be switched off, three selectable driving modes “Rain”, “Street” and “Sport”), but this does not detract from driving fun in practice. Above all, the hard-hitting Brembo monoblock pliers would have been, let’s be honest, wished for the original Bonnies more than 50 years ago. Less the price, at which some people will still swallow: At 14,500 euros it is not a bargain. Those who do without noble equipment and content themselves with the basic Thruxton are there for 12,500 euros.

The engine of the Bonneville T120 already delivers 105 Nm of torque at 3100 rpm.

Friends of the upright man driver posture and the real Bonneville look get their money’s worth with the new T120. Its engine, which is more geared to torque, delivers only 80 hp, but its 105 Nm torque already at 3100 rpm. The chassis is basically identical to that of the basic Thruxton, fork and struts (both from Kayaba) are designed / tuned differently. An 18-inch model at the front is also part of the game, which, together with the longer swing arm, results in handling that is more stable than manageable. Especially since the Bonneville also weighs 21 kilos – the use of steel instead of aluminum (rims, swingarm, mudguard, etc.) is noticeable. The T120 needs more force when turning, struggles with a stronger pitching moment in an inclined position and is tuned a bit too soft for a brisk pace. So rather enjoy the upright sitting position with relaxed legs and cruise in style.

That fits the perceived even more brawny engine, which already offers pounding propulsion from a good 1500 rpm and feels most comfortable between 2500 and 4500 tours. A relaxed pace also suits the simple, albeit properly functioning Nissin brakes. Colleague Bildl’s heart certainly beats for the sporty Thruxton, but we can also warm up to the wonderfully black variant of the Bonneville, with the beautifully trimmed Amal carburettor look and the overall successful, classic line. In black, it is also the cheapest at 11,900 euros, while red or two-tone paintwork costs an extra charge. But after all, black is beautiful.
