What do accessory silencers bring?

Even in the series dress, the S 1000 RR outclassed the competition with 201 measured horsepower. Can be added a shovel with an accessory silencer? Ten systems being tested.

Jorg Lohse

Are the fat years over? Just a few years ago, when it came to exhaust tests, it was no problem to put together a large number of top-class test fields. If you ask the manufacturers about systems for current test machines today, you hear more and more often: “I’m sorry, nothing in the program!” Behind the scenes, there is verbal drawing: You don’t even have the slightest chance of putting an exhaust that works in accordance with applicable noise regulations on the market. The counter-question why other providers make it is usually only answered with a resigned shrug of the shoulders, sometimes with poisonous comments: “One seems to have a particularly good connection to the test center!” In fact, without the elaborate flap systems that motorcycle manufacturers install in the exhaust tract, the driving noise, which is legally limited to 80 dB (A), can hardly be complied with. This form of sound insulation reveals the farce of current noise regulations all the more. To understand this, you have to look closely at the circumstances of the driving noise measurement: To determine the decibel A value, the motorcycle rolls into the test zone in second and third gear at 50 km / h and is accelerated over a distance of 20 meters , in the end the gas closed abruptly. In the age of modern engine management, it shouldn’t be a problem to calibrate the motorcycle’s control unit accordingly for this measuring field. Usually supported by a valve that kills harmful sound waves in the exhaust tract. In addition, there are no measuring fields, and so the motto outside the legally relevant area is: flap on draft, flood sewer, chapel!

As a rule, very few accessory silencers have a similar flap control. With the result that the driving noise is mostly above the legal limit. Here is an example from the last one MOTORCYCLE exhaust test with a Kawasaki Z 750: With the exception of the series pot, no exhaust was able to meet the limit of 80 dB (A) despite having an operating permit (EG-BE).

On the other hand, things are much easier with motorcycles like the BMW S 1000 RR here in this test; because the actual music plays in the fat bread box, which is placed centrally under the superbike. This is where the catalytic converter and flap control as well as reflection chambers for noise reduction are housed. This underfloor front silencer is neither touched nor impaired in its function by adding an accessory muffler.

Real mufflers are therefore hardly necessary, the tailpipe attached to the outlet of the front muffler has more of an ornamental format like on a car, rather than fulfilling a real function. Meanwhile, the music is playing elsewhere. At the same time, this means that a replacement system can hardly separate itself from the specifications of the series machine. And so in this exhaust test a situation actually arises that has never existed before: no manufacturer manages to top the series performance of the BMW. Almost all the curves of the accessory systems are almost congruent with the series. The silencer from the Dutch manufacturer is still the tightest BOS on the heels of the original from BMW. At the bottom of the test bench run is the replacement tube from Bodis – in total, six horsepower and four Newton meters are missing from the maximum values of the S 1000 RR. Nevertheless, it should be noted that this curve discussion is of a purely theoretical nature and can result in a lost lap at the regulars’ table than on the home route; because with a maximum of three percent deviation, you are still within the measurement tolerance. There remains the popular topic of weight optimization through accessory silencers. Here, too, there is little to nothing to be gained. The original end piece of the BMW weighs a mere 1300 grams, only Akrapovic, Arrow and Bodis undercut this value. Everyone else saddles on it, sometimes up to 50 percent. So the bottom line is that only individual preferences speak in favor of repotting: better sound, nicer shape. If you expect more, you have to invest significantly more and use a complete system for the Bavarian superbike. Incidentally, this tuning measure needs to be carefully prepared. The conversion itself is not for casual and hobby screwdrivers. Professionals with good tool equipment calculate three hours or more to dismantle the original and install the new cane.

Is it worth the effort? A look at the test bench curves of the street-legal systems from Akrapovic and SR Racing is thought-provoking. Both exhaust systems manage to remove the dent in the torque curve of the original version between 5000 and 7500 rpm. But they cannot achieve a real wow factor either. Maybe the fat years are really over. Which doesn’t really bother with 201 HP ex works.

5 facts about the exhaust

Product test: accessory silencer for BMW S 1000 RR

Lohse

An exhaust catalytic converter.

Perfomance:
Today, miracles can no longer be expected in modern motorcycles through tuning with accessory silencers. With a 1200 Suzuki Bandit, up to 20 percent more power was ideally achieved through simple repotting, but in the age of modern engine control and restrictive noise limits, most accessory systems usually stick to series output.

Labelling:
Operation on public roads permitted, a cat available? If there are checks on motorcycles, the race management takes a particularly close look at the exhaust systems. Especially if a silencer from the accessories adorns the rear instead of the original. In order for the inspection to go smoothly, the following markings should be present: framed E number (stands for the test country, e.g. 1 for Germany), followed by the four-digit type number (which enables clear allocation) and a circled one 5 or 9, which informs about the installation position of the catalytic converter.

Catalyst:
Exhaust gas cleaning yes or no? It goes without saying that anyone who drives a motorcycle approved after 2006 cannot do without the catalytic converter when converting the exhaust system. Even if these bikes without a catalytic converter passed the emissions test (AUK) required by the general inspection; because Euro 3 vehicles have to pass an extensive test cycle that has nothing to do with the AUK test.

dB killer:
Legal, illegal, sh … it doesn’t matter. Of course, almost every exhaust manufacturer allows the system to be adapted even further to one’s own needs via a relatively uncomplicated intervention – i.e. removal of the so-called dB killer. But if you do a check you have extremely bad cards. Relatively unlikely that the regulatory authority with a warning because of “improper noise behavior” and is satisfied with 20 euros. Rather, you have to reckon with the fact that driving without an operating permit will lead to an expensive procedure.

Holder:
The wheat is separated from the chaff on the suspension. In the low-cost segment, universal clamps are usually used, which can usually only be screwed under tension with a rubber sleeve that is easy to handle. In continuous operation, there is a risk of stress cracks due to material-killing vibrations. Ideally, the brackets are firmly screwed or neatly welded and allow the system to be attached without tension.

Lohse

Thomas Caasmann from the Society for Technical Monitoring (GTu) on replacing the exhaust on a motorcycle.

? In order to comply with the noise limit values, motorcycle manufacturers have to install complex flap systems in the exhaust tract. Accessory silencers should do without. Can that work at all??
! It is not true that motorcycle manufacturers have to install complex valve systems in the exhaust. You want it! According to EC law, the test sequence is a very precisely definable driving condition of the motorcycle in terms of speed range, gear and throttle valve position. Only this area is relevant. Measurements are only carried out in this narrow area. There is no measurement in front of and behind this area.

? What are the consequences of motorcyclists who are caught with a system that is too loud when measuring stationary noise at the roadside? Only the driving noise value is legally relevant.
! There is actually a legal basis for stationary noise and its measurement that is relevant. This is regulated in the so-called guideline for checking the stationary noise of motorcycles. This guideline is applied as soon as a traffic stop occurs “Discrepancies in subjective noise assessment” to be established. If the registered stationary noise, including a five dB tolerance, is exceeded during the measurement, according to the catalog of fines, 20 to 30 euros for a defective silencer system or ten euros for a refusal to have the sound level determined are due.

? Constant topic of Kat: Some exhaust manufacturers refer to an existing gray area in the approval of their systems. Can a motorcycle originally fitted with a cat actually be equipped with a catless accessory exhaust?
! It depends on. Above all, it depends on the emission class of the motorcycle. In March 2006, when the AUK was introduced, the Federal Ministry of Transport stipulated that up to emission code number 11 or 0211 in the vehicle documents, a silencer with a built-in catalytic converter can be exchanged for a replacement silencer without a catalytic converter. After removing the silencer with a catalytic converter against one without a catalytic converter, the limit value when examining the exhaust gases is 4.5% by volume of CO.
