Retrofit silencer for Kawasaki Z 750
Anyone can do it lighter and louder. But what about the performance? Ten mufflers for the Z 750 compete against the original.

Kawasaki Z750 exhaust test
The exhaust is still one of the most popular conversion parts on a bike. No wonder: First of all, the conversion is done extremely quickly on a moody Saturday afternoon with the Bundesliga conference in the background. Secondly, it is hardly easier and faster to give the bike a really noticeable slimming diet. And thirdly, most of the mufflers from the accessory shelves are in the sound rating far above the well-behaved and honestly downgraded series part. After a successful repotting campaign, why not think so right away? The answer to that is pretty simple.

The legal requirements for vehicle homologation leave the motorcycle manufacturers hardly any leeway – as can also be seen on the MOTORRAD test bike, a 2010 Kawasaki Z 750. A throttle valve in the exhaust tract operated by a servomotor must be adapted to the vehicle’s noise limit values.
The mufflers from the accessories trade, on the other hand, do not have such technical finesse – and often fail in the MOTORRAD series of measurements at the legally stipulated driving noise limit of 80 dB (A). Nevertheless, all test systems have an EG-BE for the Kawasaki Z 750. And according to the E-label, none of them has been issued in any exotic banana republic. According to the official documents, the test sites are located in the core states of the EU, particularly in Luxembourg. Who knows, maybe the air is a bit thicker there in the orbit of the Brussels bureaucracy…
In the video below, MOTORRAD test editor Jorg Lohse explains the special features of this exhaust test and you can see and hear the test candidates on the following pages.
Original Kawasaki exhaust

The risk of crowning the noble-looking carbon shell with a disdainful plastic cap divides the viewer. Fumbling is the order of the day when it comes to cultivation, the performance show remains subdued. But the brute sound turns it on.
MOTORRAD verdict: Satisfactory
Gianelli GX-One
mps photo studio
Weight: – 64.8% power: – 7.2% sound: shrill and angry
providers: Hostettler, phone 07631/18040, www.ixs.de

MOTORRAD verdict: Sufficient
Hashiru Sportline
mps photo studio
Weight: – 50% power: – 2.0% sound: garish
providers: Polo express delivery, phone 0180/5225785, www.polo-motorrad.de

MOTORRAD verdict: very good
Leovince GP Pro Evolution II
mps photo studio
Weight: – 61.7% power: + 0.7% sound: robust and blatant
providers: MCA Service, phone 05139/894906, www.leovince.de
coat: Stainless steel
price: 479 euros
Weights: Connecting pipe 0.4 kg; Muffler 1.9 kg; Total 2.3 kg

Plus:
Great finish with first-class processed surfaces; to fit precisely and tension-free; inimitable sound experience
Minus:
Unspectacular performance; no cat; Driving noise levels far above the limit
Conclusion:
Brute and beastly: The sound of the GP Pro makes your heart flicker and gives you goose bumps – and makes the trip with the Z 750 to the rock festival for the senses. With the noise levels and the performance curve, however, disillusionment is announced.
MOTORRAD verdict: Satisfactory
Shark Factory
mps photo studio
Weight: – 61.7% power: – 0.5% sound: full and powerful
providers: Fechter Drive, phone 07023/95230, www.fechter.de
coat: Carbon
price: 539 euros
Weight: 2.3 kg
Stationary / driving noise in dB (A): 98/87
catalyst: available
Country of Manufacture: Italy
E-mark: 3 (Italy)
variants: no
Plus:
Clean design with an attractive surface finish; quick and tension-free assembly thanks to precise alignment; Kat included; Homologation pass in practical credit card format
Minus:
Driving noise levels far above the limit
Conclusion:
Extremely slim shaped bag that can serve up a lot in terms of sound and also shines extremely brightly at the finish. On the other hand, the dent in the torque curve and the decibel peaks in the driving noise are disappointing.
MOTORRAD verdict: Satisfactory
Final scoring

The final score of the exhaust test.
Successful tuning is also a question of the wallet in this test. For the two very good systems from Akrapovic and Leovince, you have to leaf through a number of notes on the counter, but the equivalent value fits. The mix of materials, workmanship and accuracy of fit are right, plus the (small, but existing) performance plus and the catalytic converter that a Euro 3 motorcycle should have even after repotting. Unfortunately, this is missing in the hurricane system, which otherwise showed a coherent picture. With all the others, light and shadow alternate.
This is how MOTORRAD tests
jkuenstle.de
Left on the roll: the performance show put to the test.
Of course, the points belong “Performance ”and “Volume ”is one of the central elements in the MOTORRAD exhaust test. What the Z 750 with the retrofit silencers does in terms of kilowatts and newton meters was determined on the in-house test stand of the editorial team. We went to the MOTORRAD top test area to measure the stationary and driving noises.
jkuenstle.de
Rolling away at 50 km / h: noise measurement on the top test area.
Important for the legally relevant driving noise value: the motorcycle rolls up to the test section in second and third gear at 50 km / h and is fully accelerated by an abrupt gas pull. The passages are recorded from the left and right. The decibel value printed here is made up of the average of eight drives past minus two dB (A) tolerance. If it was exceeded – which were the order of the day in this test – there was a corresponding point deduction. Further test criteria: What is the quality of workmanship, where is the problem with fit and assembly.
A disaster
jkuenstle.de
Can also go in the pants: a test bench run with a defective cat.
A look at this exhaust test shows how united Europe actually is. For example, all tested systems have an EC approval, recognizable by the E number stamped on the muffler (see photos on the far right). This should actually be enough to use the accessory on public roads. Just not in Germany. Because motorcycles that are registered after 2006 must meet Euro 3. Consequently, explains Thomas Schuster from the expert monitoring organization KuS (www.kues.de), “motorcycles with replacement silencers must also meet the standard and be equipped with a catalytic converter “.
Drawing: archive
This is what the power delivery looks like with a defective Kat-cartridge.
Even if you pass the emissions test at the main inspection with a cateless system, it is not permitted to use it. Because, so Schuster explains, “Only exhaust gas limit values are checked at the HU. The Euro 3 itself consists of an extensive test cycle that such a system would hardly pass ”. Should a system with a cat really eat up its power (see graphic), this indicates a defective cat cartridge. Conversely, the most powerful systems in this test were also the cleanest.
