Motorcyclists who tend to be impatient and lazy usually prefer the chemical helpers. With regard to his health, he does not have to be very afraid of them, because the ingredients examined by the Karcher chemical laboratory manager Frank Ritscher are largely harmless and in any case much more harmless than what a motorcyclist ingests through the airways alone during a tour.

Full on it! Twelve cleaning agents in the product test

When kamikaze insects blow to attack, no visor will stay clean. And sooner or later there will also be things in the helmet that don’t belong there. For example dust, sweat and hair. Would you like more delicious details? Doesn’t have to be. Then rather the full truth about the chemical miracle cures with which the outside and inside of the helmet get fit again.

Introductory words are perfect for taking the wind out of the sails of the relevant product test complainers. Hence two messages at this point. Firstly to Horst P. from H .: Yes, we have now the end of the season. And yes, it is also correct that visor cleaners are usually not needed again until the next early summer. Since the topic is very general “Helmet cleaning” and that includes the helmet interior, which is no longer so fresh at the end of the season, we are celebrating the topic as a whole – now. Admittedly, we could have done it the other way around. Then Rudi P. would have grumbled from M..

The second message goes to Knut B. from K., who is guaranteed to miss his favorite product M. ) Accessories dealers, petrol stations as well as DIY and hypermarkets. What is not there, our readers will only be able to find with great effort. And if M. (or other products not represented here), with a bit of luck, are only available from a selected dealer in the far west of Western Pomerania, that is not our problem! Well, it had to be mentioned once! The lords of Caramba and Motul were clever enough to put samples of their products in the editorial office some time ago. These could not be obtained from the sources mentioned, but were allowed to take part out of competition.

In addition to the special cleaners that actually compete against each other, there are a few home remedies. As there are dishwashing detergents and glass cleaners for the helmet and visor cleaners. And (car) upholstery and carpet cleaners among the helmet upholstery cleaners. And without giving too much away: These mostly much cheaper products do not do badly if you ignore the user-friendliness.

But regardless of whether it is an expensive special product or a super cheap insider tip – one factor plays an all-important role in all (helmet) cleaning activities: time. If you have enough time and patience, you don’t need any special agents, at least when cleaning the visor, because almost everything that lands on the windshield can be removed with water, provided that it is left to act properly. And the helmet lining, which is now removable on many models, can be freshened up again with a mild soapy solution and a little physical effort.

The motorcycle traveler who tends to be impatient and lazy usually prefers the chemical helpers. With regard to his health, he does not have to be very afraid of them, because the ingredients examined by the Karcher chemical laboratory manager Frank Ritscher are largely harmless and in any case much more harmless than what a motorcyclist ingests through the airways alone during a tour.

It is gratifying that there is practically no reason to complain when it comes to material compatibility. Apart from two exceptions – Sonax windshield clear and the Caramba visor and helmet cleaner, which runs out of competition, caused slight stress cracks in the polycarbonate long-term test – there were no complaints whatsoever. Even very sensitive surfaces such as mirrored visors or Pinlock inner lenses withstand contact without damage. Provided, however, that no mechanical stress is added. So if a little cleaner gets where it doesn’t belong, it should be rinsed off with as much water as possible, not rubbed off.

The cleaning professionals from Karcher and MOTORRAD did not stop at just looking at the products in terms of cleaning performance. The test point also played a role in the upholstery cleaner “Re-soiling” a (rather small) role. The subject is by no means as important for helmet interiors as it is for carpets, for example, but it clearly shows a conflict of objectives in the development of cleaning agents. In order to clean well, plenty of washing-active substances (surfactants) are used. If they are not completely removed, however, they work like a magnet and magically attract dust. Which explains why freshly cleaned areas sometimes darken so quickly.

And this test showed another special design feature: Carpet cleaners are also great for cleaning, but they use many polymers (a kind of “plastic crumb”) to bind dirt. They form residues and have to be vacuumed – no problem on carpets, but a bit cumbersome in a helmet.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Product test: visor and upholstery cleaner for helmets

Herder

The upholstery cleaners completely wetted the test fields and were incorporated according to the manufacturer’s specifications. After five minutes, five wiping movements produced this result.

MOTORRAD bought all of the test samples in September 2013 from motorcycle accessories stores as well as from hardware stores and hypermarkets in the greater Stuttgart area. The tests were carried out in the research and development laboratory of Alfred Karcher GmbH & Co. KG in Winnenden, with the experts for removing nasty dirt. The helmet and visor cleaners were tested on an HJC helmet (TR-1), on Nolan mirror visors, on Pinlock inner visors and pre-tensioned polycarbonate strips. The HJC IS-16 and pieces of velor carpets were used for the upholstery cleaners. Reproducible test dirt took care of the dirt. The cleaning performance was recorded using a whiteness measuring device. During the application test, Karcher laboratory manager Frank Ritscher (frequent motorcycle rider: BMW R 1200 GS) and the MOTORRAD editor worked hand in hand.

Final evaluation and conclusion

Product test: visor and upholstery cleaner for helmets

BILLION

So the final rating turned out.

In principle, clean all tested products – at some point. However, there are big differences in the application and the price-performance ratio. The two points are directly related: If you want it to be quick and easy, you pay more accordingly. If you have the time and patience, you can also achieve satisfactory to good results with the “home remedies” from the supermarket. You don’t have to worry about material compatibility with almost any product. At least after the exposure times selected in the MOTORRAD test, there were no complaints with one exception (Sonax windshield clear on polycarbonate). The bottom line is that the helmet and visor cleaners have an (expensive) surprise test winner and a clear purchase tip. The top dog won the helmet pad cleaners.
