BMW and KTM present the Neck Brace System, a neck protection collar
Developed since 2005 by the South African company Leatt Corporation and unveiled at Intermot in Cologne then at EICMA in Milan, the Neck Brace System cervical protection system marketed by BMW and KTM will be available in early 2007.
The stated objective of the Neck Brace System, a kind of carbon and kevlar neck protection collar presented by BMW and KTM at the Intermot show in Cologne and then at the EICMA in Milan, is simple: "reduce the risk of injuries to the neck, cervical and collarbone in the event of a severe fall", assures the German manufacturer.
Invented by the doctor Chris Leatt who markets it since 2005 within his company Leatt Corporation based in Cape Town (South Africa), the "Leatt Brace" – its original name – is quite simply "the helmet of your neck", summarizes its inventor.
Half collar, half collar, the Neck Brace System is made "in carbon, kevlar and synthetic material, reinforced with glass fibers and partly covered with a flexible and soft foam that absorbs shocks"", specifies BMW, whose Equipment department has been studying this product since February 2006, in collaboration with KTM.
The Neck Brace System therefore aims to fill a gap in the protection of the neck and cervical vertebrae: "in the field of motorcycles but also in many other sports, helmets and body protectors are today considered obvious", underlines BMW, whereas"the nape and neck, a fragile region, had however remained almost unprotected".
Because even if "statistically, accidents cause few injuries at this level compared to other parts of the body", a lesion in this area of the body can cause"dramatic suites", recalls BMW.
