In the half-timbered town of Einbeck, in an old granary, what could become the Mecca of the German classic scene has opened: the PS.Speicher.

Not in secret, but with great discretion, a merchant from southern Lower Saxony had assembled what is probably the world’s largest collection of German motorcycles over the past 60 years. Including a few three- and four-wheelers, there were over 1000 mostly roadworthy vehicles in his depot. Every major brand, whether BMW, NSU, Zundapp or Wanderer, was represented with a representative selection; there was no lack of important exotic vehicles, as well as popular means of mass transport. As he got older, the merchant understood that his pleasure, namely this collection, was of considerable historical importance, and he accepted the responsibility that came with it. Karl-Heinz Rehkopf, that’s the man’s name, decided to open his treasure in the PS.Speicher for everyone.

Only where, because the listed former wallpaper factory in which he kept it had long been bursting at the seams. Then the customer reached him that the old granary was looking for a new use in his home town of Einbeck and not far from the wallpaper factory. Erected at the end of the 19th century, its six-story storage tower towers over the angular half-timbered structure of the city center, and a huge outdoor area opens up all possible possibilities. Rehkopf couldn’t resist. He bought the granary and founded the Kornhaus Foundation. That was in 2009. After that, many people toiled a lot and some invested a lot, and the PS.Speicher opened on July 23, 2014 – a fairy tale came true.

“Wheels that move us”

Wheels that move us: the motto of the exhibition in PS.Speicher makes it clear that the makers want to think outside the box of the purely technical. Of course, there are wonderful and mechanically outstanding motorcycles on display, but what is still more important is what motorcycles have done to people. What they served them for. Rehkopf himself earned his first motorcycle as a student. And even today, the now 77-year-old raves about how much this 100 Victoria from 1936 inspired him. So it was for everyone who, thanks to the RT 125, Quickly or Schwalbe, was finally able to get to work and the weekend reasonably comfortably.

As a result, the motorcycle certainly earned its greatest merit in Germany before and after the war, and the excellent didactic exhibition in the PS.Speicher makes this clear even to those who only came to the motorcycle in the colorful 70s. From the beginning with weak engines and wobbly bicycle frames on the sixth floor, it goes down to the future with as yet unexplored sources of strength. Not just instructive, but lovingly designed into haunting images with a passion for detail. You always want to look further and be surprised by what the ingenious exhibition organizers from the agency o_konzept have built up. Incidentally, the Saxons were allowed to practice beforehand when they designed the Horch Museum in Zwickau on behalf of Audi.

German motorcycles play a key role

In the PS.Speicher in Einbeck they are now delivering very great art: in the foyer an extremely rare Majestic team in the Art Deco style drives up the wall, in a milk bar there is a fairground carousel full of colorful scooters and 50s, the Wehrmacht team is in a landscape of rubble has a suitable parking space, the Simson Schwalbe is resting on a campsite, a prototype of the Zundapp KS 350, which was never built, has made it to the disco.

Indulging and dreaming, all motorcycles are placed extremely stimulating outside of these scenes. Sometimes in transport boxes, sometimes on a T-beam, sometimes in a showcase. Only in the last few years has Karl-Heinz Rehkopf expanded his collection to include a number of items from Japan, Italy and England. That’s a good thing, because without the boom this exhibition would not be credible. Wheels that move us. That’s why cars shouldn’t be missing, especially those treasures that come from the Story small car collection and illustrate the desire for a roof over one’s head. But German motorcycles play the leading role: They form the bridge to their own, German history, and they are allowed to show themselves as an important part of German industrial history.
