The Honda EV-neo electric scooter, unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009 (read MNC of October 22, 2009) and put into circulation the following spring with Japanese couriers and delivery men (read MNC of April 2010), is about to make its first laps in Europe in early July.

The Honda EV-neo electric scooter, unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009 (read) and put into circulation the following spring with Japanese couriers and delivery people (read), is about to make its first rounds in Europe in early July.

Despite its low autonomy ("34 km to 30 km / h on the flat", announces Honda), which remains the main obstacle to the development of electric scooters and motorcycles, the city of Barcelona – also often at the forefront in the field of two- wheels that Paris is late (read in particular) – indeed decided to test for a year 18 EV-neo, in collaboration with the foundation Real Automóvil Club de Cataluña (RAAC).

How the EV System Works

The EV (Electric vehicle) system that equips the Honda EV-neo electric scooter was designed "so that the operation of the latter is similar to that of a conventional scooter", explains the Japanese giant: the pilot acts on the throttle grip associated with a position sensor (APS, Accelerator Position Sensor) which converts the degree of acceleration control into an electrical signal.

The engine management unit (PDU, Power Drive Unit) then calculates the optimal level of engine power according to the signal supplied by the APS and the information supplied by the battery management unit (BMU). ), then the PDU commands the battery to send the appropriate amount of electricity to the motor to produce that optimal level of power.

Standard charging time (3h30) or fast (30 min)

On the battery side, Honda wanted the charging process to be "as simple, practical and fast as possible": the "standard" charger (on the left) or the "fast" model (on the right) connect to the battery on one side. sector and the other on the scooter terminal.

The process stops automatically as soon as the EV-neo is fully charged (an indicator light lets you check the status of the charging process).

The "standard" charger (3.2 kg) fits under the saddle and goes from zero load to full load in "approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes at an ambient temperature of 25 ° C," Honda said. The "fast" model, bulkier, much heavier (18.8 kg) and equipped with a carrying handle, does the same job in just 30 minutes.

On the cycle side, the Honda EV-neo electric scooter has an open-type frame and a flat floor, while the battery placed under the flat floor keeps a very low center of gravity.

Combined braking

On the braking side, the EV-neo is equipped with 130 mm drums at the front and rear, with a combined system that distributes the braking force between front and rear
when the left lever (rear brake control on a conventional scooter) is actuated. On the other hand, only the front brake comes into action when the right lever (control of the front brake on a classic scooter) is used..

Reserved for professionals … but presented to the general public

According to our information, the Ev-neo will be presented to the general public at the EICMA Show in Milan at the beginning of November then at the Scoter Motorcycle Show in Paris at the end of November, but it will remain dedicated to the professional environment (communities, delivery people, etc.) on time to validate its various technical options.

Depending on the evolution of legislation on access to city centers and the development of charging points, a general public version could then emerge. But in the immediate future, "small heat engines with low consumption still have a few years ahead of them", says one at Honda France. To be continued: stay connected !
