BMW unveils an interesting two-cylinder engine trail concept whose carrying capacities and passenger transport vary thanks to the modular rear part. This "9cento" prototype gives an overview of the tracks explored by the brand with the propeller in one of its favorite segments, sport-tourism.

The annual competition of elegance Villa d’Este (Italy), of which BMW is a major sponsor, has become for several years the place where the brand with the propeller exhibits its most interesting motorcycle concepts. In some cases, even prototypes foreshadowing future production models, as in 2013 with the de la …

For the 2018 edition, the creativity of the German manufacturer is expressed through a sporty-looking road trail called Concept 9cento, which receives a parallel twin probably from the F800 series. The front evokes the "TGV-esque trail", a feeling reinforced by the powerful peripherals: inverted Ohlins fork, Brembo radial caliper, Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tires and shifter.

The very airy rear part – with self-supporting saddle and short exhaust outlet under the engine – also underline the character of this chain drive motorcycle, which receives the practical "Multicontroler" handlebar control and the new instrumentation connected to dies. However, the credo of this Concept 9cento is not full performance (the twin spits 95 hp on the last) but to tend towards an ideal compromise between power, comfort and versatility. A bit like doing – very well – a certain !

Integrated, removable cases

"This concept bike aims to strike a balance," confirms Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad. "We have created a motorcycle that combines the right power for sport touring needs and above all a lot of driving pleasure. It brings together the best of the sport, adventure and touring segments in an exciting concept never seen at BMW before".

If this argument is finally quite agreed – each manufacturer has its own interpretation of the "Swiss Army Knife" motorcycle -, it is clear that this 9cento is illustrated with its astonishing modular rear part.

BMW has in fact developed clever rigid saddlebags which fit completely around the rear frame and the saddle, even to the point of widening and lengthening the surface of the passenger seat. Once assembled, these – small – suitcases are an integral part of the motorcycle’s covering: if they are not particularly harmonious, the effect is striking. !

This "luggage-dressing" would easily cling to the motorcycle, assures BMW, by means of powerful magnets. An unprecedented system that would have definite advantages in terms of speed and ease of handling. It remains to make it more reliable to avoid an untimely dropout !

"With the suitcases, the concept bike is transformed into a touring motorcycle which is also well equipped to carry two people", continue the Munich engineers. Two motorcycles in one, in short, an old fantasy for many bikers !
