Race bike: SKM Bimota DB7
SKM Bimota DB7
Content of
Bimota is known for powerful engines in elegant chassis. The fans grieve that the Rimini super sports car DB7 only has a 1098 Ducati heart instead of the current 1198 engine. SBK took on the problem.
Milled aluminum parts, the finest components wherever you look. At first glance it is a bimota D.B7 not a typical tuning motorcycle. Even in series production, it has so much luxury that it is difficult to find room for improvement. SKM team boss Frank Krekeler and Bimota Germany found the Achilles heel of every super athlete: performance. Because the heart of a Ducati 1098 beats under the fairing of the DB7 and with it an engine that has been a thing of the past since the 1198 was launched at the beginning of the year. The noble Riminesin is nominally missing 16 hp on Ducati’s current super sports car. To compensate for this performance deficit, Krekeler and his team developed a new exhaust system for the DB7. The standard manifold system gave way to a 2-1-2 stainless steel in-house construction, the massive series damper was replaced by the tuners with the two filigree Bodis silencers from the accessory shelf for a Honda CB 1000 R. Thomas Haffner adapted the mapping to the new exhaust system using Power Commander Voilà: Instead of 154 there are suddenly 168 horses in the stable, almost as many as in a Ducati 1198. Destination reached!
The Bimota chassis remained unchanged. The 43er Marzocchi fork and the Extreme-Tech shock absorber are generously dimensioned and, in the opinion of the tuner, shouldn’t have any problems with the additional power. Christian Kellner, IDM pilot at SKM, took care of the coordination of the strengthened DB7. A couple of Pazzo levers are supposed to improve ergonomics, license plate holders, horn, lights and mirrors have been removed to reduce weight. The tuning measures pay off on the Hockenheimer Grand Prix circuit. The Bimota fires out of the corners as if unleashed, spoiling the driver with torque and a beguiling sonorous two-cylinder sound. The Italian is also convincing in the curve. The stiff chassis and the very good handling give the pilot the feeling of sitting on a real race bike. The DB7, fitted with Pirelli Supercorsa tires, effortlessly follows the pilot’s choice of line and is very stable when sloping. In the Parabolika, on the other hand, the stiff basic set-up has exactly the opposite effect: the motorcycle becomes restless. When accelerating hard in an inclined position, the shock absorber tends to pump, at high speed the Italian begins to lurch a bit. On the other hand, she doesn’t show any nakedness on the brakes, delays finely adjustable and emphatic. Only the idle travel on the neat pazzo lever should be a little less.
Weight: 188.2 kg front / rear: 52.5 / 47.5 percent power: 168 hp
Price: approx. 28,000 euros
The self-developed exhaust system and the adapted mapping bring 14 hp and raise the SKM-DB7 to the level of a Ducati 1198. The torque is also impressive.
