The Wunderlich company celebrated its first serve at the PS-Tuner-GP this year. Before, it was only clear: the BMW accessories provider is rolling out an S 1000 RR. But just adding extras is not.

Completely wrapped in carbon, the Wunderlich BMW S 1000 RR looks really threatening. Not just a show, as the test drives showed.

Everyone likes pleasant surprises. On the other hand, people like to do without less beautiful ones. Then there are those who announce themselves, but who do not know how the matter will end. This also included Wunderlich’s application for the Tuner GP – first surprise. Because so far the Rhineland-Palatinate company has made a name for itself with accessories for conventional BMW models. Now they are also trying their hand at the Superbike S 1000 RR. "We want to sharpen the sporty image of our company", says product developer Frank Hoffmann, pointing to the racer, which is almost entirely clad in carbon, and explains: "The S 1000 RR is of course ideal for this."

The self-made levers were still in the prototype stage during the test.

Additional accessories contribute to the sporty outfit: titanium racing exhaust system with carbon fiber-coated muffler, brake discs in flame design, gearshift, accessory shock absorber, racing footrests, crash pads, narrow chain, slicks. Some anodized covers, screw connections and the chain tensioner are additional little optical delicacies. In addition, levers for clutch and brakes developed in-house are used at BMW.

Even in the prototype stage, the brake lever does not have a sufficient grid for width adjustment. As a result, the lever sometimes moves. At the end of the high-speed curve, Parabolika happens on the Hockenheim circuit – surprise number two is not welcome.

The automatic gearshift, the notches and the shock absorber cut a fine figure on the racetrack and increase performance.

You arrive full shower, go to the iron as late as possible – and reach into space! Quickly removed the other two fingers from the handle and anchored again with the whole hand. Finally brake pressure! Once the pads are in contact with the panes, the system delivers brutal delays. In order to prevent further shock moments, a mechanic locks the adjustment of the lever with tape.

Surprise number three concerns the chassis and is very welcome. The S 1000 RR turns easily and precisely and allows you to switch to tighter lines at any time – great! Wunderlich lifted the BMW by 15 millimeters, and the fork dips quite a bit when turning on the brake, which has a positive effect on handling. Nevertheless, the fork does not go to block and provides great feedback. "There is a special cartridge from Ohlins in the fork with a pressure of seven bar. This material is only available under special conditions", reveals Hoffmann.

Except for a small slack at 8500 rpm, the Wunderlich S 1000 RR develops its performance very linearly. The top-end power of 208 hp is barbaric – but awesome! A long gear ratio distorts the punch at four-digit speeds.

As an IDM-experienced race technician, he can fall back on his contacts and experience. That applies to the standard shock absorber anyway. Slightly modified by Hoffmann, the Ohlins TTX 36 offers plenty of grip and provides a lot of feedback. In addition, it responds sensitively and vehemently opposes the barbaric punch of the engine. The pushes at least 208 hp. From around 9000 rpm the BMW marches like hell, the front wheel jumps far into the sky in the first gears. Only shifting gears early will prevent a descent to the rear. In the Parabolika courage curve, which takes completely painless cracks even with a tuned superbike, the tester’s right hand closes the gas every time at this brutal speed, despite all good intentions. Nevertheless, the lap time monitor shows a high 1.49er time – new personal record! At first astonishing.

If the BMW strikes mercilessly from five-digit speeds, it feels comparatively tame up to 9000 rpm. As a test, we put the performance curve of a production S 1000 RR over the souped-up superbike. Surprise, the fourth! The BMW, which has been tuned exclusively via the exhaust and a different mapping, is more powerful everywhere, at 6500 rpm the difference is clearest with 13 hp and 14 Nm. So Hoffmann succeeded in voting. Apparently, the three teeth longer translation of the Wunderlich S 1000 RR distorts its performance. So what kind of overall surprise does BMW offer? Clear thing: a very pleasant one!
