2019 MotoGP Valencia GP report and result (Marquez winner)
Marc Marquez ends with a lone rider at the Valencia GP his total supremacy over the 2019 MotoGP season, during which the HRC ogre devoured 10 poles, 17 podiums and 12 victories ! Quartararo and Miller completed the podium of this final marked by several falls including that of Zarco, and the last Grand Prix of Lorenzo … Summary, rankings and best moments in videos.
Only 15 ° C in the air and 16 ° C on the ground when the lights went out for the Grand Prix of Valencia, the 19th and last round of the 2019 MotoGP championship. This autumnal freshness – underlined by 44% humidity in the air – tenfold the traps set by the circuit Ricardo Tormo, already formidable to master in normal times with its tight curves…

Several drivers will be victims: Michele Pirro, Cal Crutchlow, Franco Morbidelli, Andrea Iannone but also, unfortunately, Johann Zarco. The former KTM rider – qualified 13th – lost the front of his Honda 14 laps from the finish, while he was in 12th place between KTM and Aprilia of the Espargaro brothers…
Johann – who has replaced Nakagami since the Australian GP – took to the mat on Turn 6, just a few meters from where Danilo Petrucci had just lost control of his official Ducati in exactly the same way. And the misfortunes of French don’t end there…
The beginner Iker Lecuona is in his turn the victim of an irreparable stall in the front in the same curve: his KTM Tech3 in distress suddenly mows down Johann, who was running towards his Honda to check if it was able to set off again. The cannois is violently thrown to the ground and takes several seconds to come to his senses, while Lecuona takes him in her arms to help him get up and apologize.
What a bad combination of circumstances for Johann, already expelled in the gravel by Joan Mir in Malaysia … Fortunately, the Cannes resident got out without serious damage, joining his box after a short visit by the medical center to check the absence of injury. Johann is well shaken and will undoubtedly be badly sore tomorrow, but did not break anything in this double fall.
Frustrating way to end the season for Johann Zarco, who negotiated all weekend with the help of Claude Michy – promising of the GP of France – to recover a handlebars at Honda next year following the announcement of the departure of Jorge Lorenzo. At this stage, however, the suddenly vacant place at Honda-Repsol seems to be destined for Moto2 world champion, Alex Marquez….
Score in full control
Marc Marquez – who considers his little brother perfectly legitimate to become his teammate – has meanwhile delivered a new demonstration of his superiority by signing a 12th authoritarian victory in front of his audience. The reigning world champion very quickly dampened the hopes of Fabio Quartararo, who started with a bang in front of Miller from pole position.
Fifth at the end of the first round, Marquez – who wears a gold-colored helmet marked with the "8" for his number of world titles – came back like a rocket on the French debutant, forcing the passage on Jack Miller at the end of the second round to steal second place from him.
The junction will be made at the end of the fifth lap: the official Honda filled the seven tenths which separated him from Quartararo in the space of three and a half laps, setting the new lap record in the process. Marquez made his first attack from the inside in Turn 11 two laps later, taking advantage of his superior ease in the last part of the circuit.
The HRC prodigy will then no longer be worried, despite Fabio’s laudable efforts to stick to the train: the n ° 93 will take up to 1.7 seconds ahead of the Yamaha Petronas, before managing his lead at the end of race to pass under the checkered flag with a full second on n ° 20.
Quartararo "Rookie of the year" and best private pilot !
The rookie of the year 2019 – who started with a medium-soft tire like Marquez – will for his part be able to contain the return attempts of Jack Miller, who was consistent until the end for this last race. The Australian was competing for the title of best private pilot, which ultimately goes to Fabio !
Andrea Dovizioso for his part finished his 2019 season with a fourth place, 3.326 sec behind the winner. This new race ended outside the podium – and far from Marquez – gives the final advantage to the HRC in the team classification: Honda-Repsol wins ahead of Ducati Factory with 13 pts in advance, signing the treble of titles (driver, constructor and team).
Alex Rins finished this Grand Prix of Valencia in fifth place, not without having threatened "Dovi" in the last part of the race where the official Suzuki is traditionally formidable. Not enough, however, to tax the official Ducati !
Maverick Viñales, Joan Mir and Valentino Rossi follow, never in the game for the podium or even for the Top 5: the two Spaniards respectively charge 8.829 sec and 10.622 sec, while the nine-time Italian world champion took 22.992 sec – in 27 laps – by Marquez.
The "Doctor" – author of an unconvincing little end to the season – is followed at the finish by Aleix Espargaro on the Aprilia, followed by his brother Pol on the KTM. Not really encouraging for the n ° 46, victim of two falls from the front during the first day of free practice…
The last for Jorge Lorenzo…
Finally, Jorge Lorenzo finished his last race in MotoGP (?) At a distant 13th place, 51.044 sec behind the winner. The Mallorcan – who wore the Chuppa Chups helmet from his GP debut – retires at 32, after 18 seasons in the world, 297 Grands Prix and five world titles (including three in MotoGP).
“Por Fuera” has also designated Quartararo as his worthy successor at Yamaha, because of the fluidity of his driving similar to his style. Sacred compliment! Lorenzo – accompanied by Biaggi on the starting grid – has also refuted the idea of continuing his career in World Superbike, or by accepting a test pilot position as did his compatriot Dani Pedrosa..
"I’m going to take a long vacation in the sun and I’ll see the rest afterwards," he says, insisting on his need to take rest to heal his multiple wounds. Honestly, the n ° 99 does not completely rule out the idea of a return to the future: "you should never say never in Grand Prix, I am aware of it, but for me these are 95% final farewell" . And not "99%", Jorge ?!
Championship point
Marc Marquez is the first driver in history to exceed the impressive 400 points mark in category, with 420 units collected over eighteen races. The 26-year-old Honda official owes this incredible harvest to his consistency on the top steps of the podium: apart from his crash in Austin, Marquez only recorded victories and second places !
Your podium
– MotoGP (@MotoGP)
The eight-time world champion – six times in MotoGP – ends this 2019 season with 151 points ahead of Andrea Dovizioso and 211 (!) Points over Maverick Viñales, who finishes on the final podium thanks to his very good end of the season and his victory in Malaysia.
What to encourage Yamaha to make him publicly the soft eyes this weekend to renew his contract for 2021, by insisting in particular on his return to the foreground in the second part of the season after a laborious debut spent in the shadow of Valentino Rossi.
Already 3rd of the World Championship! Super happy !! Thank you and thank you to all the! You’re amazing!
– Maverick Viñales (@ mvkoficial12)
The latter, in fact, wraps up his worst campaign in the Yamaha colors: the Doctor only appears in 7th place overall, as in 2011 during his first year at Ducati (6th in 2012). Rossi has only been on the podium twice this year, and never on the top step: his last victory always dates back to the Dutch GP … 2017. That is two and a half years without success.
The dean of the premier category – who changes chief mechanic for 2020 – has only lost ground after his good start to the season, which resulted in two second places in Argentina and the Americas. The genius of the Alpages bluntly admits that he does not manage to (re) find the speed demonstrated by Viñales, Quartararo and even Morbidelli at the end of the season. Revenge or farewell next year ?
Rossi at dusk, Quartararo at the zenith !
Rossi finished far from the top places, but also far from another Yamaha rider: the dazzling Fabio Quartararo, of course! The French – who joined Christian Sarron at the number of pole in the premier category with his 6th achievement in Valencia – ends his very first season among the elite in a magnificent fifth place, between Alex Rins and Danilo Petrucci.
ends his sensational rookie season with another podium!
He has been simply outstanding in 2019!
– MotoGP (@MotoGP)
Fabio is indeed the first beneficiary of the fall of "Petrux", of which he recovers the place in the championship: "El Diablo" places behind him two factory pilots on his private M1, only 20 years old! This justifies the interest that Yamaha has in it, as well as the efforts made by its team – and their powerful sponsor Petronas – to provide it with a motorcycle with factory configurations next year. !
With six poles and seven podiums for his first season, the "Rookie of the Year" also arouses the respect of his rivals: Marc Marquez himself makes him one of the favorites for the win and the title in 2020, while Rossi is enthusiastic about Fabio’s "extraordinary talent" !
Zarco not interested in a Ducati at Avintia
His compatriot Johann Zarco ended his complicated season in 18th place, between Miguel Oliveira and Jorge Lorenzo. The French are still actively looking for a (good) handlebar for 2020 and also wanted to nip in the bud the rumors announcing a contact to this effect with Ducati Avinitia.
Johann refutes any desire on his part to join the private Spanish team, ensuring that he wants a good bike in a competent team to express his potential. "However, this is not the case at Avintia", slice n ° 5, who risks making friends in the structure where Rabat and Abraham ride !
The French driver continues to place his hopes on Honda, either within the factory team or in the private LCR team if Cal Crutchlow or Takaaki Nakagami join the HRC. Still, the competition is very tense against Alex Marquez, who has like all Moto2 riders a release clause allowing him to accept an offer in MotoGP despite his contract signed with Marc VDS…
First tests 2020 Tuesday in Valence
Johann Zarco’s delicate situation should change in the coming days, since the first 2020 tests are scheduled here on Tuesday and Wednesday. Newcomers to the premier class will make their first laps, like Brad Binder in the official KTM team. Iker Lecuona will find the KTM Tech3 he discovered – and dropped – this weekend, while a certain Alex Marquez could make his debut on the official RC213V…
Johann for his part asked Honda-LCR to compete in this first series of tests in place of Takaaki Nakagami, still recovering from his shoulder operation. Let’s hope for the French that this opportunity is given to him and that his future becomes clearer before the end of next week … Stay tuned !
