Conversion kit to electric drive
Vespa and Lambretta as electric scooters
Anyone looking for a way to convert their Vespa or Lambretta to electric drive should take a closer look at this conversion kit.
D.The conversion kit is advertised, among other things, with the statement that it is a cost-effective solution for turning a two-stroke scooter into an electric scooter. The kit is available in the SIP Scootershop for 1,990 euros. That’s quite a penny. But let’s keep in mind that the current electric Vespa called Elettrica costs around 6,200 euros, the argument would like "inexpensive" accept some. The possibility of converting your beautiful old Vespa – or Lambretta – to a modern drive without changing the look, should interest some enthusiasts more. Especially those of you who can do without the two-stroke sound – and smell – painlessly or even have to because of inner-city environmental zones.
Vespas and lambrettas with 10-inch wheels
The conversion kit is suitable for models with ten-inch wheels. Most older Vespas and Lambrettas can be used with this. The complete drive train swing arm flies out. A new swing arm with a hub motor in the rear wheel is introduced. The complete package is attached with four aluminum brackets, including the brake drum. The battery is placed under the seat and can be connected and charged using a plug-in system, i.e. simply using a plug and charging cable. The battery is permanently installed and cannot be removed for charging. During assembly, however, additional brainpower has to be invested in many places, because the conversion kit is a universal solution and not a model-specific installation kit.

The battery is placed under the seat and can be connected and charged using a plug-in system, i.e. simply using a plug and charging cable.
It should take four to five hours before the battery is full again. Then, according to the manufacturer, a range of around 50 kilometers and a top speed of 55 km / h are possible. The driver can check how much juice he has left using the gas handle with charge level indicator supplied. The converted scooter is started by turning the main switch in the footwell under the seat and turning the key. Then – as we know it from other electric scooters – it starts quite quickly. Successful traffic light starts should be certain. And puzzled looks. Because such a beautiful old Vespa that you neither smell nor hear, it is still extraordinary until now.

The throttle with charge indicator is included in the conversion kit.
Road approval of the conversion kit
Road approval is possible, but not guaranteed. SIP Scootershop notes the following in the product description: "Several technical test reports from the Netherlands are included in the scope of delivery. This is intended to facilitate road approval. Whether and how this is possible depends on the respective regulations in the various countries. The approval of the test reports also depends on the respective organization or the respective auditor. According to the manufacturer, several converted scooters are already registered in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, there is not yet a general registration certificate or ABE etc.."

The conversion kit for the electric drive of old Vespas and Lambrettas was developed by the Dutchman Laurent, whose company is called Smeets Classic. For four years he worked on and developed his own Vespa and fiddled around until this package could be offered in this form.
