Indian Challenger 2020
Super excavator with Power-V2
EICMA 2019
The US motorcycle manufacturer Indian is launching a new series with the Challenger. The excavator-style model comes with a new V2, a half-shell fairing and many technical features.
Heart of I.ndian Challenger is the new, liquid-cooled PowerPlus V2 integrated into an aluminum frame, which generates 122 hp at 5,500 rpm and 178 Nm torque at 3,800 rpm from 1,769 cm³ (108 cubicinch). The maximum speed for the 60-degree four-valve V2 is 6,500 revolutions. Other features include a six-speed gearbox with real overdrive, a servo clutch, three driving modes (rain, standard, sport), hydraulic valve clearance compensation and hydraulically operated timing chain tensioners, dry sump lubrication and 52 mm throttle valves. The Indian Challenger is also equipped with cornering ABS, traction control, engine drag torque control, cruise control, a keyless go system and LED lights all around.
Indian
The classic, drop-shaped drop-in backward sloping excavator line of the Challenger is determined by the large side cases with a total of 68 liters of storage volume and the large, frame-fixed half-shell cladding with height-adjustable window. The 19-inch front wheel, fitted with a 130/60 tire, is guided by a 43 USD fork with 130 mm of travel. At the rear, a hydraulically pretensionable central spring strut with 114 mm travel springs and dampens. The 18-inch rear rim is fitted with a 180/60 tire. Brake power is provided by Brembo four-piston calipers and 320 discs that are attached radially at the front. The rear is supported by a 298 disc in combination with two-piston calipers.
Touchscreen in the cockpit
The extremely comfortable bench and the 22.7 liter tank are designed to ensure long trips on the Challenger, which weighs 361 kilograms when dry. The cockpit landscape is determined by two large round instruments (rev counter and speedometer) and a seven-inch touchscreen underneath, which can also be operated with gloves. A 100-watt audio and navigation system are also standard on board. Connectivity is ensured by a USB port and Bluetooth technology.
Indian
The 2020 Indian Challenger is only available in Titanium Metallic, the special Challenger Dark Horse model is available in Thunder Black Smoke, Sandstone Smoke and White Smoke. The Indian Challenger Limited variant is offered in Thunder Black Pearl, Deepwater Metallic and Ruby Metallic. The Challenger will be coming to Europe in mid-2020. The base price will be a bit above the Chieftain models – i.e. around 30,000 euros.
The Indian Challenger will celebrate its European premiere at EICMA 2019 in Milan.
Conclusion
Indian is poaching more and more in the Harley-Davidson enclosure and with the new PowerPlus-V2 the Indians are way ahead in terms of performance.
