BMW’s secret plans

BMW not only complements the modular system typical of the brand with a new R 1200 GS-HP and a K 1200 R and GT. The Munich-based company is also surprising with a completely new series in the middle class. For the first time, test drivers were caught with the T-models.

European motorcycle developers have a tough time keeping their work secret. At some point they have to be tested on public roads, and then they run the risk of being discovered by attentive readers. In addition, motorcycles generally have to refuel quite often. You can do this covertly in a garage with the canister, or, if you spare the effort, publicly at a gas station. The BMW test drivers obviously felt very safe, otherwise they would not have been photographed so innocently. It’s great that you have positioned your two machines in such a way that we can show you, dear readers, both sides of the new T series.
The pictures reveal the sensation: BMW is developing a completely new generation of Bavarian engines, an in-line two-cylinder. In addition to the boxers, the single-cylinder and the old and new four-cylinder, a fifth is now being built
Engine series. BMW T 800 could be the new mid-range twin from Munich
be called. The displacement of probably 800 cm3 is a reasonable distance from the F 650 and the boxers with 1200 cm3. In terms of performance, the twin with 78 hp could close the gap between the roughly 100 hp boxers and the 50 hp single.
The architecture of the two in a row is revealed by the toothed belt drive. It sits on the right as with them
F 650 models. It follows that the clutch is on the left, in contrast to the new K four-cylinder. So the twin is by no means only half
K 1200 engine, but a completely new engine. At most, the high-performance sports engine could have come into play as a design supplier of the cylinder block and four-valve cylinder head, the extremely small distance between the exhaust manifolds indicates this. In addition, the electronic engine control known from the K series will probably take care of the correct supply of mixture and
take care of its ignition.
For the chassis, the Munich-based company relied on a very light aluminum bridge frame. A conventional telescopic fork works at the front, the rear wheel has a powerful single-sided swing arm, probably also made of aluminum. The two-in-one exhaust system houses a three-way catalytic converter with lambda control.
At least two versions are currently being developed. One with full fairing, designated by MOTORRAD as T 800 R, and one with slim half fairing, the T 800 S. The tank is like the
F 650 CS lie under the bench. Lightweight construction is also the key with this new model series. The new ones should weigh less than 200 kilograms, making them even lighter than the single-cylinder ones.
As with all BMWs, the Munich-based company takes care of the development
extensive range of accessories. Anti-lock braking system, suitcase set and various others
Comforts that beautify the motorcyclist’s life will turn the new Twins into multifunctional mid-range bikes. The T-models will probably only be on the market in autumn 2006. The price should be less than 8,000 euros.
In this regard, the BMW R 1200 GS-HP is in a completely different league. Ambitious off-road fans will have to shell out around 15,000 euros for the well-equipped hard enduro. In return, you get a really off-road boxer enduro with a full 100 hp. Amazing: BMW does without the well-known Telelever system in this version and installs a powerful upside-down fork with over 250 millimeters of spring travel as the front wheel suspension. The rear wheel guidance did not remain untouched either. A
reinforced and longer swing arm
combined with a longer-stroke strut for true off-road qualities. Everything is held together by a newly developed tubular steel frame. Off-road tires, 21 inches at the front, more stable rims, probably with magnesium hubs, are just as happy for enduro riders
like the aluminum protective bar for the headlights and the instruments.
At 210 kilograms, the GS-HP weighs a lot less than its sister model, which weighs 242 kilograms. This is achieved through the wheels mentioned above, a smaller tank, a narrower rear and the lighter frame. For desert drivers and
other adventurers should take the engine with them
a special adjustment option for inferior types of gasoline. The start of sales can already be expected this early summer.
The BMW K 1200 GT, which was also caught in secret test drives, is even more expensive than the GS-HP. The Yamaha FJR 1300 sports tourer is based on the well-known K 1200 S. In order to achieve greater comfort on long journeys, BMW has provided the GT with a more expansive fairing. The tank has been enlarged, as has the seat bench, which has a much more comfortable pillion seat than its sporty sister. Lower footrests are also used for this purpose, which is made possible by the flatter exhaust silencer. The reinforced rear frame can accommodate an ample luggage system similar to that of the
R 1200 RT. With a full tank, the GT weighs just under 290 kilograms.
The almost horizontal in-line four-cylinder is tuned tamer for improved touring suitability with more steam from the cellar. 150 hp are enough for that
spoiled contemporaries – 250 km / h top as well. And the K 1200 GT pulls through cleanly from idle speed. Potential customers will probably have to wait until 2006, however.
Much earlier, namely on June 4, 2005, the boldest BMW will be
ever hit the market that
K 1200 R. Who would have thought a few years ago that the white and blue
would one day build the strongest naked bike in the world? Not even BMW itself. Reason, high acceptance, safety, environmental friendliness were guidelines to which the motorcycle department was happy to submit. That has changed radically. Now the people of Munich are building a wild one
High-end muscle bike and thus continue the philosophy of the overpowered and difficult to tame men’s motorcycle, which was once founded by the Yamaha Vmax. Bitterly, formally brutal, provocative. 163 HP at 10250 / min, 127 Nm torque, the whole thing slightly shorter than in the K 1200 S, so that it really hurts in the arms. Without ABS, the Bazibruller weighs 237 kilograms with a full tank, a steeper steering head angle and less caster promise magical handling.
The BMW should be on the brakes
work amazingly, in secret tests in Jerez, the naked K reached a time of 1.50 minutes, which is on the level of 1000 super athletes. A great basis for the BMW Power Cup, which Bavaria will contest with this machine as part of the MotoGP series.
With a base price of 13,000 euros, the K 1200 R at the level of the Yamaha MT-01. There’s a lot for that
Accessories, from the luggage system and a small windshield to ABS, electronically adjustable chassis and heated grips, at sometimes hefty prices. But does the macho need it?
