It is hard to believe that less than 100 hours later in this Saxon summer idyll, the MotoGP cars will thunder away in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators. Then it tears up the rest anyway.

The calm before the run

More and more global, more and more spectacular, always bigger. Where the traveling circus MotoGP stops, the air burns. A few days earlier, the small Saxon town of Hohenstein-Ernstthal still seemed to be quiet.

An electric forklift hums unobtrusively through the almost empty paddock of the Sachsenring in Hohenstein-Ernstthal. Gutted semi-trailers remain abandoned. The Spanish workers of the MotoGP marketer Dorna routinely assemble a temporary command temple for the bosses from an ingenious aluminum puzzle with bare chests. At best, you can guess what is happening here. But it is hard to believe that less than 100 hours later in this Saxon summer idyll, the MotoGP cars will thunder in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Then it tears up the rest anyway. A high-speed two-stroke scythe begs for food. “Grim Reaper” Bernd Pischotta (67) is responsible for maintenance. “Fortunately, I’ve already got the monster slope in the Omega behind me – but there’s still a lot of work to do.” The machine howls. It continues. On the other hand, there is heavenly peace in the huge gravel bed of the destination entrance curve. With the future in view, a young trio rakes through the gravel, almost silently, meditatively. The spokesman and group elder of the trio introduces himself. “Steini”, 25 years old: “This is my fourth year here for JF Motorsport Consulting.” There is a sense of pride when he talks about the last week: “We have 60 buckets of paint from Tuesday to Sunday whitewashed the curbs. As soon as we have the gravel bed ready, we will probably set up the airfences. But the boss plans all of that! “

Planning has been going on since January

Who is the boss? And can you speak that? “Talk to the boss?” The assistant looks out from behind her “Bild” newspaper in great disbelief. “He’s always on the move during these weeks – no chance.” No wonder, because the work cycle on the access roads around the Sachsenring is increasing every second. Team trucks parked in between are meticulously cleaned, there is work at the grandstands, caterers sweep past. Two cheerful Sternquell brewery employees juggle a bar cart to a parking space. When asked whether the beer could run out in the worst case, the 47-year-old Uwe Rodel grins: “The beer never runs out. We have been planning since January, holidays have been canceled, and there are countless barrels and containers with a capacity of between 1000 and 27000 liters in the central warehouse in Sachsenring. How much is being implemented here at the GP? “I don’t know, the exact number probably only knows the tax office,” smiles colleague Olaf Urbig before a well-motorized, black BMW whistles around the corner.

“All right, men, have you already finished the back?” Comes the sound of the car. Should that be the phantom, Jurgen Fritzsche, the boss of JF Consulting? The driver nods and gets out. The 53-year-old Hohenstein-Ernstthaler really doesn’t have time to give away. He quickly gets to the point: “My company has a contract with Sachsenring Management GmbH, SRM, the promoter. We plan, coordinate and carry out. I currently employ 50 people and then coordinate 700 volunteer helpers and around 1000 security people from a specialist company. I’ve already been active around the world in the GP, currently only at the Sachsenring. ”So, that’s it, Fritzsche gets in, thunders on. Next construction site.

“From Tuesday to Sunday we completely freshly painted all curbs with 60 buckets of paint.” The gravel bed trio: Andre, Sabine and “Steini” take care of the airfences after the gravel bed.

Time for a little more serenity. You can find it in the press center in the person of Judith Pieper-Kohler. The 36-year-old in the SRM outfit, responsible for media and marketing, has little time, but she takes herself: “My grandfather was already working on racing mopeds here at the old Sachsenring, and for years I was driven through the GP paddock myself this world. ”Actually, it wanted to stop in 2012, but when the ADAC Saxony surprisingly abandoned the GP alignment in 2011, the SRM took over as the local association of the surrounding communities. “I was right back on board with a new role.” Since then she has been organizing with a small team – and things are going well. “But if you want to know more about the community, please visit our Lord Mayor Lars Kluge.” A good tip, because the way to the town hall leads directly over Goldbachstrabe past the Ankerberg. The legendary camping hill with a view of the Sachsenring has separated opinions for years. Racing fan or party pig? Mostly both.

Petrol station operator Michael Bruckner has been an intrepid contemporary witness for nine years. “If Goldbachstrasse is closed at the weekend, we will no longer sell petrol here at the Ankerberg / racetrack interface, only other liquids. Above all, one thing: beer, beer, beer. ”The washing system then releases the beer store and is filled to the top. The same Dutch people have been camping on his site for years. There have even been visitors who brought go-go girls who then danced on barrels. “People come barefoot, muddy and completely blue, and suddenly you recognize the Sparkasse man that mom let out on the weekend.” But even in extreme cases it has never completely overturned, and the police next door would always have everything sovereign had a grip. “It’s stressful, crazy, but my employees still enjoy doing it. When the MotoGP races, we even have to yell at the customers at the cash register, it’s that loud. “

Most of them are real fans themselves

Change of scene, the town hall of the 15,000-inhabitant community Hohenstein-Ernstthal, which is also the birth town of Karl May as a part-time job. Lord Mayor Lars Kluge, born in 1977, is happy about both the Sachsenring and Karl May: “Of course, such a race track is practically in the middle of town and then a World Championship run with this number of visitors is a burden for the residents. That’s why one or the other flees on the GP weekend, but most of them are real fans themselves. ”But probably not as hard-nosed as Frank Stein and his buddies. The people of Leipzig are currently setting up their tent on the Ankerberg. On Monday, almost a week before the big break.
