The good news first: It’s working. Velvety soft, with an impeccable chassis and really amazing qualities. A classic for every day that makes you even more cheerful with every kilometer.
Wire up the electrical system, put the carburetor on, put schnapps in the tank and off you go – by the way. There was still a lot of work to do before the engine was allowed to hum for the first time.
Small and big changes make the almost 70 hp of the renovated R 80 G / S.

Restoration of the BMW R 80 G / S
Part 6, overview of costs and effort
A good year ago, the BMW R 80 G / S was lying on the workbench, down to the last screw. Now the slim enduro ensures a lot of driving pleasure. But it has its price, as a review of costs and effort shows.
You could just leave it. Rebuilding old motorcycles costs time, money and nerves. Especially when you venture into new territory. Where can I find which parts, who does the best mechanical work, who can advise if it gets stuck? It’s a good thing that the two-valve boxers are looked after by an incredibly large fan base and looked after by many spare parts specialists with great experience.

Restoration of the BMW R 80 G / S
Part 6, overview of costs and effort
2 pages) as PDF
From the beginning, Jochen Siebenrock’s BMW base in Wendlingen am Neckar, only 30 kilometers away, was the number one contact point. Also because the two-valve spare parts warehouse is well stocked. One of the reasons that a number of BMW specialists around the world sell the replica parts from Wendlingen. Anyone who ventures into the adventure of an all-round renovation knows how annoying it is when the required parts cannot be found and the whole project drags on.
BMW branch was often helpful
But the official BMW branch was also often very helpful on short official channels. For example, when the workshop “in between” dismantled one or the other component with the necessary special pulling devices. However, borrowing special tools is understandably strictly rejected – with exceptions here, too, confirming the rule.
Help also comes from the internet forum www.2-ventiler.de, which has lots of nice, passionate and experienced boxer drivers with advice. In addition, as a member, you can fall back on helpful assembly tips, technical drawings and tightening torques, around the clock as well as at the weekend. In this way: A thank you to the forum and everyone who stands behind it.
Here you will get help: literature about the two-valve engine.
Of course there are also numerous books about and about the two-valve engine. For example the repair instructions from Franz Josef Schermer, who deals with the models from 1969 to 1984. Care and maintenance are in the foreground, but less specific work on the engine and transmission.
To this end, Helmut Heusler penetrates into the deepest depths of mechanics with his book Boxer-Technik Volume 3 (Bodensteiner Verlag, www.andy-schwietzer.de). For the overhaul of the gearbox and engine it is an excellent aid that doesn’t hold back with tips on improvisation and the production of special tools.
A bit cumbersome and confusing, but the listing is accurate, the official BMW workshop manual is the most comprehensive reading for the boxer models R 60/7 up to the R 100 RS. Available from BMW branches or from Schober-Verlag (www.schober-verlag.de). Somewhat antiquated, but peppered with basic technical explanations is the special volume 121 from the series “Now I Help Myself” from Motorbuch Verlag.
After around 160 working hours, which is the equivalent of 20 working days of eight hours each, the BMW was on its wheels as requested. The spare parts, from the power kit cylinders to the seat cover, hit a big hole in the budget at 3100 euros. All wearing parts have now been replaced or overhauled – and therefore good for the next 100,000 kilometers.
A further 950 euros had to be transferred for the surfaces of the frame, swing arm and painted parts. Which, including the purchase price of 2800 euros, results in a hefty total of 6850 euros. As I said at the beginning: You could just leave it. But because the desire and passion for the old iron, tinkering and tinkering swept away all financial objections, people are now happy about a chic motorcycle with the highest entertainment value – and can only recommend the imitation to all boxer friends.
