Review Yamaha FZ6 S2

New Fazer with more power

The popular Yamaha FZ6 has finally been given a major makeover. And starts the new season with full power as the S2 model with 98 hp.

Friends of the FZ6 looked somewhat disappointed and at a loss when Yamaha revised the half-faired FZ6 almost two years ago and brought it onto the market as the Fazer S2, but their favorites as well as theirs "ordinary" Fazer ?? throttled to insurance-favorable 78 hp left almost unchanged in the program. In addition, the power reduction was not very convincing: the up to then standard 98 hp, easy-revving four-cylinder was robbed of its liveliness.

For an extra 50 euros it could be uncorked ?? a model policy that the buyers could not really make friends with. Now the FZ6 comes back with 98 hp as standard and benefits from the technical changes that the Fazer already received as the S2 in 2006: new instruments, a more comfortable seat, cast aluminum swing arm and crisp front brake. The clearly structured cockpit alone with its easy-to-read instruments such as the digital speedometer and analog tachometer instead of the playful mouse cinema of the predecessor is worth part of the price difference of 700 euros. Yamaha now charges 7495 euros for the new FZ6, 6795 euros for the old one.

Unfortunately, the rear-view mirrors with their short arms are impractical, and upper arms covered in leather block the view of the traffic behind. Meanwhile, the footrests, which are positioned two centimeters lower and allow a more comfortable knee angle, make it easier for the passenger to ride. Like the front passenger, the driver also benefits from the now non-slip seat cover and, like on the old FZ6, enjoys a very comfortable sitting posture, the extremely easy handling and the unrestricted high steering precision despite the overall comfortable chassis setting, which is particularly pleasant on bad roads. The cast aluminum swingarm is supposed to improve the stability, whereby in practice no difference can be seen. The new solution always looks nicer, especially the sight of the prismatic guide for the hollow-drilled rear axle is a selling point.

Brakes and ABS

The S2, on the other hand, made a noticeable step forward thanks to the one-piece four-piston brake calipers from the FZ1. The predecessor still braked with simple double-piston floating calipers. The pressure point is now much crisper, the controllability more precise, and two fingers are enough to decelerate the Yamaha vehemently. Just as you would expect from a sporty, ambitious naked bike. Extensive delay measurements in the ABS control tidy, however, put the good overall impression into perspective. With an average of just 8.0 m / s2 and a braking distance of around 52 meters from 100 km / h, the results are very mediocre. When the front and rear brakes are used simultaneously, the deceleration improves to 8.5 m / s2 and the braking distance to 45.4 meters, but the FZ6 has done this exercise better in the past, namely when it did not yet have ABS. In the top test in MOTORRAD 21/2003, the FZ6 Fazer achieved an enormous 9.9 m / s2 and a braking distance of only 39 meters.

Of course, that doesn’t speak against ABS. This is because the braking tests are carried out by professionals under optimal conditions; such values ​​are hardly reproducible in everyday brakes. Fortunately, ABS is now standard in this class. With the FZ6, this is still fine-tuned at higher speeds, pulsing barely noticeably in the hand lever. As the speed decreases, the control intervals become coarser and, shortly before standstill, sometimes become so rough that the FZ6 tends to unexpected stoppies.

The smoothly whirring four-cylinder underwent no change. With a measured 100 PS it stands well in the drilling, takes on the gas gently, tolerates low speeds without appearing too weak. But it also makes no secret of the fact that it draws its power from high speeds. The six-speed gearbox shifts smoothly and precisely. In view of the consistently high speed level, the average consumption of five liters is not surprising, but more economy would be desirable. Overall, however, it is to be welcomed that Yamaha is using the "S."-Model has sharpened the profile of the popular naked bike again. A 34 hp variant for beginners is to follow soon. And in the 78 hp class, the XJ 6 Diversion will be part of the program in future.
