Is the price of the new Yamaha Tracer 700 well placed against competing motorcycles ?
The new Tracer 700, redesigned and improved for 2020, landed in Yamaha dealerships at a price of 8,799 euros. How does this versatile road trail compare to its competitors? ? Answers in our MNC guide.
First major change on the 2020: its bold new front – or disturbing, according to taste. Its LED daytime running lights, in the form of stretched lines, overlook two lenticular headlights. This "humanoid" robot-style design is directly inspired by the YZF-R1 but also by car production: Audi A4, Citroën DS or Peugeot 3008.

This road bike from the roadster also adopts a bubble adjustable with one hand on "60 mm", a handlebar widened by 34 mm – which reinforces its ergonomics of trail inspiration -, a raised saddle now one-piece, optimized suspensions and a modernized LCD instrumentation that can be operated from the left hand, if not in color and with a Bluetooth connection.
Its 689 cc vertical twin cylinder, set at 270 °, complies with Euro5 standards via adjustments to the intake and exhaust: its performance is 73.4 hp and 68 Nm, a very slight drop compared to the first generation (-1.4 hp and similar torque).
Its final chain drive is however shortened to compensate, as Yamaha has already done on the which operates the same engine and chassis platform. This versatile and funny motorcycle – thanks to the punch of its CP2 – retains small dimensions and a featherweight of 196 kg with the 17 liter tank.
Its improvements are fatally reflected in its price, which goes from 8,399 euros when it was released in 2016 to 8,799 euros for this 2020 vintage (available in blue, red or gray). For comparison, the MT-07 from which it is derived costs 7,099 euros, while the stocks of Tracer 700 are currently sold off in the network at 7,799 euros.
Failing to have been able to try it as planned during its press launch due to one in the Canaries, MNC compares its characteristics to those of its main rivals while waiting for a test in due form … Let us add that the Tracer 700 sold 1,208 units last year, making it one of the bestsellers in the mid-displacement trail-GT category.
Tracer 700 2020
- Twin cylinder in line
- 73.4 hp and 68 Nm
- 196 kg
- 8,799 euros
BMW F750 GS (995 immates in 2019)
- Twin cylinder in line
- 77 hp and 83 Nm
- 224 kg
- 10,470 euros
The propeller brand has gained momentum with its new F750GS / F850GS platform powered by a Loncin engine. The more "road" oriented F750GS has a new rigorous steel frame and effective standard traction control. Its improbable "mini-bubble" annoys however, just like its "smooth" engine and its high price..
Honda NC750X DCT (488 immates)
- Twin cylinder in line
- 54.8 hp and 68 Nm
- 230 kg
- 9,049 euros
Honda’s “utilo-trail” struggles to seduce with its engine, certainly torquey and sober, but devoid of length and character – despite the incredible flexibility of its double-clutch DCT transmission. And yet the qualities are there: its false tank accommodates a trunk capable of storing an integral while its excellent behavior clears its high weight..
Honda CB500X (1475 immats)
- Twin cylinder in line
- 47.5 hp and 43 Nm
- 197 kg
- 6,899 euros
Comparing the CB500X to the Tracer 700 is not necessarily logical given the differences in displacement and therefore performance (43 Nm for the Honda, 68 Nm for the Yamaha). Especially since the Tracer is terribly alert from low revs !
But it’s a credible alternative thanks to its fabulous balance, handling and sparkling engine. Not to mention its attractive price, which propels it to the top of the segment with almost 1,500 units last year. !
Kawasaki Versys 650 (991 immates in 2019)
- Twin cylinder in line
- 69 hp and 64 Nm
- 217 kg
- 8049 euros
Designed on the basis of the old ER-6, the Versys 650 takes back its lively – but vibrant – twin in the towers! Kawasaki has erased its drought original suspension while giving it an excellent saddle. The "Green" is also the cheapest in the category, with some 750 euros difference over the new Tracer: its price should fall further before its probable redesign on the mold of the Z650 in 2021.
Suzuki V-Strom 650 (981 immates in 2019)
- V-twin
- 71 hp and 63 Nm
- 213 kg
- 8,399 euros
One of the rare motorcycles in the category with a V-twin, inherited from the SV650: flexibility and vigor are present, despite its design which is beginning to date and some vibrations. The comfort and efficiency of this light motorcycle are exciting, but its perfectible finish and its old-fashioned design are a shame, because the Suz ‘is an undeniable success..
