Representatives of the motorized two-wheeler industry took advantage of the opening of the to sign with the interministerial delegate for road safety, Frederic Pechenard, a charter through which they undertake to encourage motorcyclists and scooter riders to wear protective and approved equipment.

Initiated in particular following the alarming conclusions of the survey of the group of insurers GEMA Prevention concerning the low rate of equipment for two and three-wheeled users (read), this national charter signed by Thierry Archambault as president of the Chambre Syndicale International Automobile and Motorcycle (CSIAM) aims to "encourage, promote and encourage the acquisition and wearing of protective clothing", explains Road Safety.

Objective: "to reduce the seriousness of the bodily accidents that these particularly vulnerable users may suffer", recalls the government body which welcomes the involvement of the motorized two-wheeler sector, "including all players without exception – manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, insurers, mutualists, user associations or prevention – are mobilized to achieve a single goal: reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on the roads ".

Four levels of equipment at reduced prices

As expected (read), this agreement takes the concrete form of the promotion of "security packs" in the various points of sale. More precisely, "specific commercial offers" allowing to equip oneself with gloves, boots, jacket, pants and even airbag at reduced prices will be put forward by the manufacturers, the equipment suppliers and the "participating brand networks".

These offers, which will start from spring 2014 and then from November 1 to April 1, 2015, will include four levels:

  • Level 1 (jacket and gloves) suitable for occasional practice
  • Level 2 (level 1 + boots) suitable for more regular practice
  • Level 3 (level 2 + pants) suitable for even more frequent practice
  • Level 4 (level 3 + airbag) suitable for intensive practice

For their part, user associations that have signed this charter, such as the French Federation of Angry Bikers (FFMC), the French Motorcycling Federation (FFM) and Club 14, as well as insurance associations (GEMA Prevention, Assureurs Prevention ) undertake to "encourage" their members to equip themselves with these security elements.

Road Safety, for its part, will set up a communication action "of national scope" making the equipment of the user of motorized two-wheelers the "major theme" of its communication devoted to this category in 2014..

20 to 30% savings … and a possible medium-term obligation ?

It remains to know the real cost and the promotional format implemented around these different packs. For the moment, it is a question of "aid granted to the purchase" which would allow a "saving of 20 to 30% depending on the chosen package". These "aids" could a priori take the form of reimbursement checks, which implies that the total sum must nevertheless be advanced..

Finally, it remains to determine the potential obligation to wear these "security packs" in the more or less near future. Because if we follow the usually repressive logic of the government, it’s a safe bet that "the incentive" quickly gives way to the "sanction" … To be continued on MNC: stay connected !
